Chương 9

Adrian read without touching the pages.

“This proves financing,” Daniel said.

“It suggests financing,” Adrian replied. “The company has legitimate contracts.”

“Two gunmen were paid through it.”

“Their names aren’t on these transfers.”

Melissa turned another page.

A photograph showed Dario Bellini leaving a restaurant with Salvatore four days before the SUV ambush.

Adrian’s expression did not change.

“You knew they met?” she asked.

“Dario reported it.”

“What did he say?”

“Salvatore was trying to recruit him.”

“Was he?”

“No.”

Daniel made a dismissive sound. “Trusting evidence.”

Adrian looked at him. “Dario refused fifty thousand dollars when his mother needed surgery. He has taken bullets for me twice. If he betrayed me, there will be a reason more substantial than a photograph.”

Melissa continued through the file.

Near the back was a printed email sent to Gabriel Romano through an anonymous relay six months earlier.

You have something that belongs to my family. Your daughter has something that belongs to yours. Let us correct both mistakes.

There was no signature.

The attached image showed Melissa walking from her obstetrician’s office, one hand beneath her pregnant stomach.

Adrian took the page.

“You received this?” he asked Daniel.

“Gabriel did.”

“And he did not warn us.”

“He warned her to leave you.”

Melissa looked at Daniel. “When?”

“Six months ago.”

“He never contacted me.”

“He sent Evan.”

Evan had begun appearing near the nursery more often around that time. He claimed Adrian had increased the guard rotation after the ambush.

“He wanted me to leave while Adrian was in rehabilitation,” Melissa said.

Daniel nodded. “You refused.”

“I didn’t know that was what he was asking.”

“You were eight months pregnant. He didn’t want to frighten you.”

“He stocked an escape van but didn’t want to frighten me?”

“Gabriel was never good at doing one thing at a time.”

Adrian placed the threatening email on the table. “Salvatore knew who she was before Leo was born.”

“Yes.”

“He could have killed her while I was in the hospital.”

“He wanted the ledger.”

“And the ring,” Melissa said.

Daniel’s eyes shifted to her chest.

Adrian saw it.

“What does the ring do?”

“Nothing,” Melissa said.

“Daniel thinks otherwise.”

Daniel closed the file. “The crest authenticates orders within what remained of the Romano organization.”

“There is no Romano organization,” Adrian said.

“Not in the way you mean.”

“What way do you mean?”

“Men who remember debts. Families Gabriel supported after Pier Four. Union officers, business owners, two retired judges, people in shipping and construction. They are not soldiers waiting for a war. But they will move money, hide someone, open a gate, or refuse a favor if the ring tells them Gabriel approved it.”

Melissa touched the chain.

“My father gave me a network.”

“He gave you a choice,” Daniel said.

Adrian studied the crowned wolf. “Salvatore wants to control the symbol.”

“He wants to destroy it,” Daniel replied. “A Moretti grandchild wearing Romano blood makes every old lie unstable.”

Leo began to cry.

The conversation stopped.

Melissa sat on the cot and fed him while the three adults listened to the emergency radio. News reports mentioned an explosion at a private residence outside the city, though no names had been released. County police described the event as an active investigation. A traffic bulletin warned drivers to avoid the roads near the estate.

At two twenty in the morning, the radio announced that Salvatore Moretti would hold a press conference at ten to address “a family medical crisis affecting several regional businesses.”

Adrian laughed quietly.

“He’s going public,” Melissa said.

“He wants me either dead or legally invisible before markets open.”

“What happens if everyone believes him?”

“He controls the companies. He removes the board. He liquidates anything connected to me and moves the money before the courts catch up.”

“And the criminal side?”

“He already controls enough of it to order tonight.”

Daniel poured coffee into three chipped mugs.

Melissa declined. Adrian took his black.

The cup rattled once against his watch. He set it down.

“What aren’t you telling us?” he asked Daniel.

Daniel looked toward the cabinets.

“Gabriel arranged to meet Salvatore tonight.”

Melissa stopped adjusting Leo’s blanket.

“Where?”

“Pier Four.”

Adrian’s face went blank.

“The same warehouse?” he asked.

“It was rebuilt after the fire. Different owner, same ground.”

“Why?”

“An exchange. The ledger for proof that Salvatore ordered the attack on your vehicle.”

“And Gabriel went alone?”

“He told me he would call by eleven.”

It was after two.

Melissa stood too quickly. Dizziness moved through her. She steadied herself against the cot.

Adrian rolled forward. “Sit down.”

“No.”

“Teresa said—”

“I heard her.”

“Then act like it.”

“My father may be at Pier Four.”

“He may be dead.”

The cruelty of the sentence silenced the room.

Adrian closed his eyes. “I’m sorry.”

“You keep doing that too.”

“What?”

“Saying the worst thing because you’re afraid someone else will say it first.”

He looked away.

Daniel checked the time. “Gabriel expected trouble. He would have placed a fallback message.”

“Where?” Melissa asked.

“Not here.”

“Then where?”

Daniel did not answer.

Adrian said, “Rosa.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“The letter said she was compromised,” Melissa said.

“Compromised does not mean captured,” Adrian replied. “It may mean watched.”

Daniel took a key from his pocket and turned it over between his fingers. “Rosa maintains a storage unit under a false business name. Gabriel used it for emergency communications.”

“Where?”

“Secaucus.”

“We go there,” Melissa said.

“No,” Adrian and Daniel said together.

She looked from one to the other.

Adrian spoke first. “You stay with Leo.”

“I am not waiting in a basement while two men decide what my father meant.”

“You are bleeding.”

“I am also the only person who knows how Gabriel marks a false message.”

Daniel’s eyebrows lifted. “How?”

“He reverses the wolf’s crown.”

“That is not something he told me.”

May you like

“He told me because he expected one of you to be caught.”

Adrian picked up his pistol and checked the magazine.
