Chương 14

The transmitters remained undetected.
Salvatore walked around Adrian’s wheelchair.
“I paid for the best rehabilitation in the country,” he said. “I gave you every opportunity to recover with dignity.”
“You arranged the injury.”
“I arranged a correction. The truck driver exceeded his instructions.”
“You hired men with rifles.”
“Insurance.”
Adrian’s eyes flicked toward Melissa.
The admission had come easily because Salvatore believed confession was power.
Gabriel had been right.
Salvatore extended one hand. “The access key.”
Adrian held up the slim device.
“The ring first,” Salvatore said.
Melissa removed the chain from her neck.
Her fingers paused on the silver crest.
She had worn it beneath school uniforms, work clothes, a wedding gown, and the hospital robe in which she delivered Leo. As a child, she believed it had belonged to a dead man. As an adult, she learned it belonged to a living man who remained absent by choice.
Now Salvatore believed it could make old loyalties obey him.
She placed it in his palm.
He smiled.
Nothing happened.
No men emerged from shadows. No hidden army changed sides. It was only an old piece of silver made powerful by what people had agreed to remember.
Salvatore closed his fist around it.
“Now the key.”
Adrian rolled forward.
One of the guards aimed a rifle at his chest.
Rosa spoke. “Salvatore.”
He glanced at her.
“You still chew the inside of your cheek when you’re frightened.”
His jaw stopped moving.
Rosa smiled despite the blood at the corner of her mouth. “Thirty-two years and you never fixed that.”
Salvatore struck her.
Melissa stepped forward.
Three rifles lifted.
Gabriel caught her arm.
Salvatore looked almost embarrassed by the loss of control. “The key.”
Adrian handed it over.
Salvatore inserted the device into a laptop on a folding table. The screen displayed a verification request. He entered a code.
A progress bar appeared.
Seven minutes.
“You killed my father,” Adrian said.
Salvatore watched the screen. “Your father died because he mistook sentiment for leadership.”
“You arranged the shooters.”
“I arranged a transition. Gabriel complicated it.”
Gabriel’s scarred hand tightened around Melissa’s arm.
Dario moved one step closer to the armed guard beside him.
Salvatore continued. “Your father intended to divide the companies. Legitimate assets to you. The rest to men who had spent their lives building them. It would have destroyed us.”
“It might have freed me.”
“You were thirteen.”
“I am not anymore.”
“No. You are a man in a chair who believed a pretty woman with a false name loved him.”
Melissa felt Adrian absorb the sentence without looking at her.
Salvatore smiled at her. “Did you?”
She answered honestly. “Not at first.”
Adrian’s face did not move.
“That must hurt,” Salvatore said.
“It does,” Adrian replied.
Salvatore seemed disappointed by the admission.
Melissa looked at Adrian. “I married you because my father found your name in the Pier Four records. I needed to know whether you ordered the attacks that kept him hidden.”
“You could have asked.”
“You were a Moretti.”
“You became one.”
“I know.”
The progress bar passed halfway.
Salvatore watched them with open pleasure. “This is the part families never understand. Truth does not repair anything. It only changes the reason people hate each other.”
Melissa looked at Rosa’s cracked glasses, at Gabriel’s burned hand, at Dario standing beneath the photographless walls where his father had died.
“Sometimes the reason matters,” she said.
The laptop chimed.
Salvatore leaned toward the screen.
ACCESS DENIED.
A second message appeared.
EMERGENCY DISCLOSURE COMPLETE. ALL CONTROLLING CREDENTIALS REVOKED.
Salvatore stared at Adrian.
“What did you do?”
“I resigned.”
“You cannot.”
“I did.”
“You destroyed your own companies.”
“I removed myself from them.”
“They are our family.”
“They were accounts.”
Salvatore’s face changed. The controlled surface broke at last.
He pulled the revolver from beneath his jacket and aimed it at Adrian.
Dario drew his weapon.
The guard beside him turned.
Gabriel shoved Melissa behind a steel column as the first shot fired.
The sound was enormous inside the customs office.
Adrian’s wheelchair spun sideways. The bullet struck the metal back support, throwing him toward the floor.
Melissa lunged for him.
Dario fired at the overhead lights.
Darkness dropped across half the room.
Men shouted. Rifles swung toward muzzle flashes. Rosa kicked backward, knocking her chair into Salvatore’s knees.
Gabriel seized the laptop and threw it across the floor.
The river door burst inward.
Federal agents entered behind ballistic shields, shouting commands that overlapped until the words became noise.
One of Salvatore’s men fired toward them.
The return shots came in a short, disciplined burst.
Melissa reached Adrian.
He lay on his side beside the wheelchair, conscious, one hand pressed against his ribs.
“Are you hit?”
“I don’t know.”
She searched his shirt with both hands. No blood.
Salvatore crawled behind the folding table and grabbed Rosa by the hair. He pressed the revolver beneath her jaw.
The gunfire stopped.
Agents held positions near the river door. Dario stood with his weapon lowered but not released. Gabriel remained behind the column, one hand on Melissa’s shoulder.
Salvatore pulled Rosa upright.
“Move back,” he shouted.
No one moved.
He looked at Adrian. “Tell them.”
Adrian pushed himself into a sitting position against the wheelchair.
“Let her go.”
“You think the government will protect you? You think that woman will stay after they take the house and the money and your name?”
Melissa saw Adrian glance at her.
Salvatore saw it too.
“That is what you chose over family?” he asked. “A Romano who entered your bed to investigate you?”
Adrian’s breathing was strained. “No.”
Salvatore smiled.
“I chose my son.”
The answer landed without drama. It was not a speech. It was a fact Adrian had finally made expensive.
Rosa drove her heel down onto Salvatore’s foot.
At the same moment, Melissa threw the only object in reach—the metal wheel chock from beside Adrian’s chair.
It struck Salvatore’s wrist.
The revolver fired into the ceiling.

Rosa dropped.
Dario shot Salvatore once in the shoulder.
