Chương 9

“I was unfair earlier.”
“Yes.”
She waited.
He did not rescue her from the discomfort.
“I’m sorry,” she said.
“Accepted.”
“That was fast.”
“I am busy.”
She smiled despite herself.
“Gabriel.”
“Yes?”
“I do know you are not Julian.”
The line remained quiet.
“I need you to know it faster,” he said.
Then his voice softened.
“But I understand why you cannot.”
Julian agreed to meet on Wednesday afternoon at the law firm.
He arrived with two attorneys despite his request to meet without lawyers. Khloe brought Priya.
They sat across from each other at a polished conference table. No flowers. No cameras. No audience. Julian looked older than he had at the gala. A gray shadow marked the skin beneath his eyes.
His company’s stock remained suspended. Three lenders had demanded information. Two charities had paused their Duval Nexus accounts.
Julian placed both hands on the table.
“You are destroying a company that employs eleven hundred people.”
Khloe opened the folder before her. “Your company used restricted donations to satisfy liquidity measurements.”
“Temporarily.”
“You reported the money as available.”
“It was available.”
“To whom?”
“To the platform.”
“It belonged to charities.”
“The platform was contractually permitted to aggregate settlement funds.”
“Not to count them as corporate liquidity.”
His attorneys shifted.
Julian ignored them.
“Every charity was paid.”
“Late.”
“No patient was denied care.”
“You do not know that.”
“Neither do you.”
Khloe looked at him.
There were moments in marriage when she had admired his ability to remain certain. He could make doubt appear like weakness in everyone else. Investors called it vision. Employees called it leadership. At home, it had made disagreement feel exhausting.
“You signed the transfer approvals,” she said.
“I approved treasury operations presented to me by finance.”
“The East River reserve required executive authorization.”
“I relied on professionals.”
“Your CFO left the country.”
“He is cooperating remotely.”
“He flew to Switzerland the afternoon of the gala.”
“For a family matter.”
“His family lives in Connecticut.”
Julian’s jaw tightened.
One of his lawyers interrupted. “We are not here to discuss Mr. Serrano’s travel.”
Julian raised a hand.
He looked at Khloe. “You want me punished.”
The accusation carried less anger than fatigue.
Khloe closed the folder.
“I wanted you embarrassed at the gala.”
His eyes changed.
She continued. “For perhaps ten seconds. I wanted you to feel what you made me feel. I am not proud of that.”
One attorney began taking notes.
Julian almost smiled. “You always confess the part no one can prove.”
“I am telling you because anger is not evidence. The transfers are.”
“You think saying that makes you objective?”
“No.”
“Lancaster put you in that chair to come after me.”
“Gabriel asked me to review a failing charity. You were not important enough to be the reason.”
That hurt him. She saw it.
He leaned back.
“Do you remember the first apartment?” he asked.
The question altered the room.
Khloe did remember. A fifth-floor walk-up on West Eighty-Ninth with one working radiator and a kitchen drawer that fell out whenever opened. Julian had written early code at a table they found on the sidewalk. Khloe had worked at a consulting firm and brought home leftovers from client dinners. They had celebrated his first funding commitment with grocery-store champagne because the investor’s wire had not arrived.
“You knew what it was like,” he said. “To be one missed payment from losing everything.”
“That was twenty years ago.”
“The feeling does not care.”
His voice had changed. Less polished. More like the young man who once woke at four in the morning to check bank balances.
“When our lenders tightened the covenant, we had receivables coming,” he said. “Government contracts. Enterprise payments. The money existed. The timing didn’t.”
“So you used donations.”
“We used the settlement float.”
“You renamed it.”
“We kept the company operating.”
“You kept the stock price from showing the truth.”
“I kept eleven hundred people employed.”
His lawyer touched his arm. “Julian.”
He pulled away.
“You think Lancaster has never moved money between accounts to manage a quarter?” he asked.
“This is not about Gabriel.”
“It is always about Gabriel now.”
Khloe stared at him.
There it was, beneath the finance and the attorneys and the public statements: not love, perhaps, but possession offended by replacement.
“You stood beside him carrying a child,” Julian said. “You knew what people would think.”
“I stood beside a colleague while pregnant.”
“You wore that dress.”
One of his attorneys closed her eyes.
Khloe felt an unexpected calm.
“My body is not evidence against me,” she said.
Julian looked down at the table.
She wondered whether he heard himself. She wondered whether it mattered.
“Dalia left the apartment,” he said.
Khloe had not expected the admission.
“She believes I lied to her.”
“Did you?”
“I simplified.”
“That is what you call lying when you need to remain the hero.”
He flinched.
Khloe regretted the sharpness, then decided regret did not require retraction.
Julian rubbed his thumb across the edge of the table.
“Help me contain this,” he said. “Delay the board report. Give us thirty days to restore the accounts and refinance. If the company collapses, the charities may recover less, not more.”
The argument was not entirely false.
That made it dangerous.
Duval Nexus processed hundreds of millions in donations. A disorderly collapse could freeze payments, create litigation, and harm the same organizations Khloe wanted to protect. Immediate exposure might satisfy moral clarity while producing practical damage.
“What would happen in thirty days?” she asked.
“We secure new credit.”
“From whom?”
“I have options.”
“Names.”
“I cannot disclose confidential negotiations.”
“Then you do not have options. You have hope wearing a suit.”
His mouth tightened.
“I could also disclose your committee emails,” he said.
The threat arrived quietly.
Priya shifted beside Khloe.
May you like
Julian continued. “You received notice of extended settlements. You asked one question and accepted the answer. If this becomes a public prosecution, you will not remain untouched.”
Khloe looked at him for a long moment.
