Chương 5

Khloe remained backstage through the first three auction lots. A weekend in Tuscany sold for eighty thousand dollars. A commissioned portrait sold for forty-two. Dinner with a former president reached three hundred thousand before the president’s representative quietly reminded the auctioneer that the dinner included only four guests.

Ordinary wealth continued performing itself.

Khloe checked her phone.

Her obstetrician had sent a routine portal reminder about Monday’s anatomy scan. Beneath it were forty-three messages from numbers she did not recognize, two calls from reporters, and a text from her younger sister, Mae.

YOU LOOK BEAUTIFUL.

ALSO JULIAN LOOKS CONSTIPATED.

MOM WOULD HAVE ENJOYED THIS TOO MUCH.

Khloe smiled.

Then another message appeared from an unknown number.

Ask Julian where the East River donations went in March.

No name. No explanation.

She showed Gabriel.

“Do not respond,” he said.

“I know.”

He raised an eyebrow.

“I do know things occasionally.”

“I’ve heard rumors.”

The message arrived again, this time with an attachment.

It was a screenshot from a Duval Nexus internal ledger. The image showed a pool of charitable funds, including an Allesian Hearts transfer of $2.8 million, moved temporarily into an account labeled E.R. Strategic Reserve.

The screenshot could be false. It could be altered. It could be an attempt to manipulate them during the gala.

But the date matched one of Anna’s delayed transfers.

Khloe’s stomach tightened.

Not the baby. Something colder.

“Who had access to this?” Gabriel asked.

“Finance, treasury, senior compliance.”

“And Julian?”

“He founded the company. He has access to whatever he wants.”

The ballroom applauded another auction result.

Khloe stared at the screenshot until the numbers lost shape.

Eight months earlier, when Gabriel first asked her to review Allesian Hearts, she had found the organization’s records disorderly but not criminal. The former executive director had been careless, the board complacent, and donors too impressed by gala photographs to study cash flow. Khloe had recommended new controls, independent reconciliation, and a temporary pause on expansion.

Julian’s processing company appeared in the records, but only as a vendor. She had not examined its internal settlement practices. At the time, she had been trying to survive the divorce without reading every article that included her name.

Now she wondered whether she had overlooked the problem because looking toward Julian still hurt.

The thought was not proof. It was worse. It was responsibility.

“Anna needs to see this,” she said.

“She also needs to finish the gala without causing a stampede.”

“We cannot hide it.”

“We cannot authenticate it in ten minutes.”

Khloe looked toward the curtain.

Onstage, Charles announced that the gala had raised nine million dollars in direct contributions. The number should have felt triumphant. Instead, she saw hospital administrators making decisions based on money that might not move as promised.

“We disclose the delayed match,” she said. “Nothing beyond what we know.”

Gabriel watched her.

“And tomorrow?”

“Tomorrow we begin an independent review.”

“Julian will fight.”

“He fights when the waiter brings the wrong mineral water.”

“That is not an answer.”

“It’s the one I have.”

He leaned against the table. “Khloe, if this pattern extends beyond Allesian Hearts, Duval Nexus may face regulatory inquiries, donor claims, and a liquidity crisis. The foundation could lose access to funds already in transit. Hospitals could be left with commitments they cannot cover.”

“You think we should wait.”

“I think we should know what waiting costs and what disclosure costs.”

She hated the reasonableness of his answer.

“You sound like him.”

Gabriel went still.

Khloe immediately wished the words back.

“No,” she said. “That was unfair.”

“Yes.”

He did not soften it for her.

She sat in a folding chair because her legs had begun to ache. The gown tightened across her belly when she bent, and she adjusted it with both hands.

Gabriel pulled another chair across from her.

“You hired me because I would tell you when the numbers were bad,” she said.

“I asked you because you do not confuse urgency with panic.”

“I may have overlooked this.”

“You did not have internal access.”

“I had enough to question the delays.”

“You questioned twenty-three other things.”

“Not this one.”

“No one audits every shadow in a room.”

“People depending on the money do not care how many shadows I audited correctly.”

He glanced toward the screen, where the total continued rising.

“That,” he said, “is why you are chair.”

She looked at him.

“Not because you never miss anything. Because when you discover you have missed something, you do not spend the next week inventing reasons it was someone else’s fault.”

The sentence settled between them.

Khloe thought of Julian in the storage room, insisting a missing transfer was an administrative delay.

She stood.

“Find Anna.”

Near midnight, Khloe returned to the stage.

The auction had ended. Guests were preparing to leave, though few had actually moved toward the doors. Rumors had spread across the tables faster than dessert. Phones glowed beneath linen napkins. Julian remained seated with two members of his board, speaking urgently. Dalia was gone.

Khloe took the microphone.

The room quieted.

“Before we conclude,” she said, “I need to clarify the status of tonight’s announced matching pledge.”

Julian looked up.

Khloe did not look away.

“The twelve-million-dollar Duval Nexus transfer has not been verified by our bank. The individual donations made tonight are recorded and secure within our direct accounts. Until the pledged match is confirmed, Allesian Hearts will not include it in our total.”

Whispers moved through the hall.

A reporter called, “Are you accusing Duval Nexus of failing to honor the pledge?”

“No,” Khloe said. “I am telling you the funds have not arrived.”

“Did Mr. Duval mislead the charity?”

“I am not going to substitute speed for evidence.”

Another reporter shouted, “Will there be an investigation?”

“There will be an independent review of all unsettled transactions processed for Allesian Hearts.”

Julian rose.

For one instant, Khloe expected him to approach the stage. Instead, he buttoned his tuxedo and walked toward the exit while cameras turned to follow him.
