Chương 8

The man who had been present during Matteo’s darkest moments.
The man who had attended Nico’s birth.
For years, Matteo had trusted him more than almost anyone.
Sofia looked at him with sorrow.
“You never knew.”
Matteo did not take his eyes away from the monitor.
“No.”
His voice was low.
“I trusted him.”
Liana watched the pain cross his face.
It was not only anger.
It was betrayal.
Adrian was not an enemy who attacked from outside.
He was someone Matteo had allowed inside his home.
Inside his family.
Inside his life.
The security footage continued.
The younger Adrian walked through the hospital corridor carrying a folder.
He looked calm.
Confident.
Like someone who belonged there.
The recording showed him entering Elena’s room.
Then the audio became clearer.
“Elena, you cannot tell Matteo.”
Her voice responded weakly.
“You do not get to decide what happens to my son.”
Matteo closed his eyes for a moment.
Hearing Elena’s voice again hurt more than he expected.
The recording continued.
Adrian spoke quietly.
“You know what happens if he finds out.”
Elena answered.
“He will protect Nico.”
Adrian laughed softly.
“No.”
A pause followed.
“He will destroy everyone involved.”
Liana looked at Matteo.
She understood why Elena had been afraid.
She knew Matteo loved his family.
But she also knew how far he would go to protect them.
The recording ended before the rest of the conversation could be heard.
Matteo turned away from the screen.
“Find him.”
The security team immediately moved.
Sofia stepped closer.
“Matteo.”
He stopped.
“Do not make the same mistake Elena feared.”
His expression hardened.
“What mistake?”
“Acting before knowing everything.”
The words reached him.
Because Elena had written the same warning.
Do not let fear decide Nico’s future.
Matteo looked toward Liana and the baby.
For years, he had survived by reacting quickly.
By removing threats before they could hurt him.
But this was different.
This was about Nico.
This was about the people who had protected his son when he failed to see the danger.
He took a breath.
“Find him quietly.”
The security team nodded.
The mansion returned to a tense silence.
Hours passed without news.
Liana stayed with Nico in the nursery.
Matteo remained nearby.
Neither of them wanted to leave the child alone.
The hidden truth had changed everything.
But one thing had not changed.
Nico still needed comfort.
And somehow, Liana was the person who gave it to him.
“You should rest,” Matteo said softly.
Liana looked up.
“So should you.”
A small, tired smile appeared on his face.
“I am not very good at that.”
“I noticed.”
For the first time in days, a quiet moment passed between them.
Not as employer and employee.
Not as two people connected by a mystery.
Just two people who had both lost someone they loved.
“My mother used to say that children remember kindness,” Liana said.
Matteo looked at Nico.
“She was right.”
Liana looked surprised.
“You believe that?”
“Yes.”
His voice became softer.
“I spent so much time trying to protect him from danger that I forgot he needed someone to make him feel safe.”
The honesty touched her.
Because she understood.
Grief could make people build walls.
Matteo had built an entire fortress.
Liana had built silence.
But Nico had somehow found a way through both.
A sound from the hallway interrupted them.
The security officer appeared.
“Sir.”
Matteo stood immediately.
“We found Adrian.”
Liana watched his expression.
“Where is he?”
“At an abandoned property outside the city.”
Matteo prepared to leave.
Then he stopped.
He looked at Nico.
The baby was asleep.
Peaceful.
Safe.
He looked at Liana.
“Stay with him.”
She nodded.
Before leaving, Matteo paused.
There was something he wanted to say.
Something he had not said to anyone in a long time.
“Thank you.”
Liana looked at him.
“For what?”
“For bringing my son back to me.”
Then he walked away.
The old property was empty when Matteo arrived.
No guards.
No escape plan.
No signs of a struggle.
Only Adrian sitting alone inside the abandoned building.
The older man looked tired.
Not afraid.
“You found me.”
Matteo stood across from him.
“You wanted me to.”
Adrian looked down.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Adrian was silent for a moment.
“Because I was tired of hiding.”
Matteo’s expression remained cold.
“You watched my son suffer.”
Adrian lowered his eyes.
“I never wanted to hurt him.”
“You installed cameras.”
“Yes.”
“You entered his nursery.”
“Yes.”
Matteo stepped closer.
“Why?”
Adrian looked toward the window.
“Because I was trying to protect him from someone worse.”
The answer surprised him.
“Who?”
Adrian looked back.
“The person who ordered me to keep quiet.”
Matteo’s eyes narrowed.
“Who gave you orders?”
Adrian hesitated.
Then he reached into his coat and removed a small envelope.
“I kept this because I knew one day you would need proof.”
Matteo took it.
Inside was a list.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
Evidence of someone manipulating events around Nico’s birth.
At the bottom was one final name.
The person who had been trying to control everything.
Matteo stared at it.
The person was not part of his organization.
Not a rival.
Not an enemy.
It was someone from Elena’s past.
Someone who wanted Nico because of what he represented.
Adrian spoke quietly.
“Elena discovered the plan.”
Matteo looked up.
“She asked Clara to help her hide the truth.”
“Why Clara?”
“Because Clara was the only person Elena trusted completely.”
Matteo understood now.
The connection between the two women.
The reason Liana had become the key.
Clara had protected Elena’s secret.
Elena had protected Clara’s daughter.
Two mothers had sacrificed everything to protect two children.
When Matteo returned to the mansion, the sky was beginning to brighten.
Liana stood in the nursery holding Nico near the window.
The baby looked peaceful.
Like the nightmare surrounding him had finally ended.
Matteo walked inside.
Liana immediately noticed his expression.
“It is over?”
He nodded.
“The truth is out.”
She looked at Nico.
“And him?”
Matteo looked toward the sleeping child.
“He is safe.”
A tear moved down Liana’s cheek.
Not from sadness.
From relief.
Matteo approached slowly.
“There is something I need to tell you.”
She looked at him.
“Elena knew about you.”
Liana smiled sadly.
“I know.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“She believed you would save him.”
Liana looked at Nico.
“I only held him.”
Matteo shook his head.
“No.”
His voice was gentle.
“You reminded him he was loved.”
The mansion that once felt cold slowly changed after that day.
The hidden cameras were removed.
The nursery became a place of peace instead of fear.
The servants no longer whispered about the crying baby.
They talked about the little boy who finally laughed again.
Liana remained in the mansion.
Not because she was a maid.
Not because of a secret.
Because she had become part of Nico’s life.
And Matteo slowly learned that family was not always created by blood.
Sometimes it was created by the people who stayed when everything else fell apart.
Years later, when Nico was old enough to understand the story, he would ask why Liana was always there.
Matteo would smile and tell him the truth.
“She found you when everyone else was searching.”
And Liana would remind him of something her mother once taught her.
A child never forgets the person who makes them feel safe.
Because sometimes the greatest secrets are not the ones hidden beneath a mattress.

Sometimes they are the love people leave behind when they are gone.
And that love can find its way home.
