Chương 1

"The first time Matteo Varric realized his son was afraid of the world, the sound came from the nursery and echoed through the entire mansion.
For three weeks, nine-month-old Nico had cried every night until his tiny voice became the only thing anyone remembered inside the enormous house.
The servants whispered about exhaustion.
The security team avoided eye contact with their boss.
Even Matteo, a man who had survived betrayals, gunfire, and enemies who wanted him dead, stood helplessly beside his son's crib with no idea how to bring him peace.
That night, the luxury mansion felt colder than ever despite the warm golden lights shining across the marble floors.
The crystal chandelier above the grand foyer reflected against the polished surface while Matteo walked slowly down the hallway carrying Nico in his arms.
The baby’s face was red from crying, his little hands moving restlessly against his father’s shirt.
Matteo gently rocked him, but nothing changed.
“Please, Nico,” Matteo whispered, his voice breaking despite every effort to remain calm.
The powerful mafia boss who made entire rooms fall silent sounded like a frightened father begging for a miracle.
Behind him, the mansion remained unusually quiet.
The people who worked there had learned never to interrupt Matteo Varric.
But there was one person who did not know that rule.
Liana had only been working inside the mansion for a short time, yet she had already noticed the sadness hiding behind the expensive walls.
At twenty-two years old, she carried a quiet grief that she rarely spoke about.
Her dark brown hair was always tied neatly behind her head, and her burgundy maid uniform was always perfectly arranged, but nothing could hide the pain in her eyes.
She had lost someone she loved, and since then, she had learned how to move through life while carrying a wound nobody else could see.
That evening, she walked through the foyer carrying folded white linens toward the upstairs rooms.
She stopped the moment she heard the crying.
It was not just the sound of a baby.
It was the sound of someone desperate.
Liana looked toward the center of the room and saw Matteo holding Nico.
For a moment, she froze.
Everyone in the mansion knew Matteo Varric was dangerous.
They knew his name carried fear across the city.
But standing there under the crystal chandelier, holding his crying son with exhausted eyes, he looked less like a powerful man and more like someone who had run out of answers.
Liana slowly lowered the linens in her arms.
Matteo noticed her presence and immediately became guarded.
His eyes moved toward her, studying every small movement.
“Can I help?” Liana asked softly.
Matteo looked down at Nico.
The baby continued crying against his chest.
“No one has been able to,” he replied quietly.
There was no anger in his voice.
Only defeat.
Liana looked at the baby for several seconds.
Something about Nico’s cries felt familiar to her.
Not because she knew him.
Not because she had ever held him.
But because she understood what it meant to feel alone.
She carefully stepped closer.
“Let me hold him,” she whispered.
Matteo did not answer immediately.
His protective instincts fought against his exhaustion.
The woman standing before him was only a maid.
She was someone he barely knew.
Yet something in her expression made him hesitate.
She was not trying to impress him.
She was not afraid of his reputation.
She simply looked at his son like he was a child who needed comfort.
After a long pause, Matteo slowly placed Nico into her arms.
The moment Liana held him, the crying continued for only a few seconds.
Then something changed.
The baby’s tiny movements slowed.
His breathing became softer.
His trembling fingers relaxed against the fabric of her uniform.
Within moments, the entire foyer became silent.
Matteo stared.
He did not move.
He did not speak.
For the first time in weeks, he heard his son sleeping peacefully.
Liana looked down at Nico with tears gathering in her eyes.
She gently adjusted the baby blanket around him.
The expression on her face was not surprise.
It was sadness.
As if holding him reminded her of something she had lost.
Matteo noticed that.
“Why did he stop for you?” he asked.
His voice was barely above a whisper.
Liana looked at him but did not have an answer.
“I don’t know,” she said.
Matteo watched her carefully.
He had spent years learning how to recognize lies.
But he saw none in her face.
Only confusion.
Only compassion.
And something else he could not understand.
The next morning, Matteo ordered the nursery security footage to be reviewed.
He had spent the night thinking about what happened.
A baby did not suddenly calm down without a reason.
There had to be something he was missing.
Liana was called back to the nursery while Matteo stood beside the crib.
The room was larger than most apartments.
Soft lighting covered the walls.
Expensive toys filled shelves.
A small camera monitor displayed every corner of the room.
Yet despite everything he had provided, Matteo felt like his son was still unsafe.
Liana held Nico near the window while Matteo studied her reaction.
She looked around quietly.
Her eyes moved over the crib.
The stuffed animals.
The folded blankets.
The security cameras.
Something caught her attention.
She stopped.
Matteo noticed immediately.
“What is it?” he asked.
Liana did not answer at first.
She walked closer to the crib and looked carefully at the mattress.
Her fingers hovered above the blanket but did not touch it.
“When did this start?” she asked.
Matteo’s expression changed.
“Three weeks ago.”
Liana slowly looked back at him.
“That was when the crying started?”
“Yes.”
She glanced at the security monitor.
“Has anyone checked everything inside this room?”
Matteo’s eyes narrowed.
“What do you mean?”
Liana looked uncomfortable, as if she was afraid of sounding unreasonable.
“I mean everything.”

The room became silent.
Matteo stepped closer.
