Chương 12

“Door barricaded.”

“Movement west stair.”

“Possible female, second floor.”

Lorenzo stood beside the command table, unable to see anything except pulsing dots on a map.

Then an agent shouted, “Baby not in room.”

Donnelly turned toward him.

Lorenzo’s clean phone rang again.

Matteo.

He answered.

“Tell them to back out,” Matteo said.

His breathing was fast. An infant fussed near him.

“Where are you?”

“Underground garage. I have Lucia.”

Donnelly pointed to the garage schematic. A surveillance team moved toward the vehicle exits.

Matteo continued. “Dominic lost his nerve. He set the alarms early. I’m taking her somewhere else.”

“Put her down and walk away.”

“I can’t.”

“You can.”

“You don’t understand.”

“I understand you carried her out of my house.”

“I saved her.”

The sentence stopped Lorenzo.

“What?”

“Dominic planned for both of them to die. Isabella locked herself in the bedroom with Lucia when she smelled smoke. I opened the connecting door. She gave me the baby.”

Sophia’s account had begun there.

Matteo’s voice shook. “Dominic’s man was supposed to take Lucia back into the nursery after Isabella collapsed. I changed it. I gave her to Sophia.”

“You took her from Sophia at the stairs.”

“I had to make Dominic believe the plan was intact.”

“You held her six weeks.”

“I kept her alive.”

“For a vote.”

“For leverage. There’s a difference.”

“Not to her.”

Matteo’s breathing grew louder. A car door opened in the background.

Donnelly signaled units toward the lower garage.

“You released the evidence,” Matteo said. “Now Dominic has no reason to keep anyone alive.”

“Where is Sophia?”

“Second floor. He took her.”

“Is she alive?”

“She was when I left.”

“Bring Lucia to the garage exit. Leave her in the bassinet.”

“And then what happens to me?”

“That depends on Donnelly.”

Matteo laughed once. “So it’s true.”

“You knew agents were here.”

“I didn’t know you brought them.”

“You burned my wife and expected loyalty?”

“I didn’t light the fire.”

“You built the lie.”

“I kept Lucia breathing.”

“You fed her through a terrified woman and moved her like stolen property.”

“I was trying to survive Dominic.”

“No. You were trying to replace me.”

Matteo said nothing.

Lorenzo could hear the baby beginning to cry.

The sound was thin, tired, real.

“What do you want?” Lorenzo asked.

“A car. Clear exit. Ten minutes.”

“You know that won’t happen.”

“Then I keep her.”

Donnelly whispered, “Tell him we can discuss surrender.”

Lorenzo looked at her.

She nodded.

“Matteo, listen to me. Donnelly will discuss surrender. You put Lucia down, show your hands, and you live long enough to explain what Dominic did.”

“I become an informant?”

“You already became one when you told me he planned to kill her.”

“I can’t go to prison.”

“Then you should have chosen differently before today.”

“You think you’re better because you waited until your own child was taken?”

The words landed because they were true.

Matteo continued. “How many fathers begged you? How many men said they only carried the envelope or drove the car? You told them choices had consequences.”

“Yes.”

“And now?”

“Now I know they were right to beg.”

The line went quiet except for Lucia’s crying.

Lorenzo pressed the phone closer.

“I can’t undo what I did to them,” he said. “I can stop doing it to you. Put her down.”

Matteo’s voice broke. “Dominic will kill my wife.”

“She is in federal custody.”

“What?”

“Marco took her this afternoon. Donnelly has her now.”

Donnelly looked at Lorenzo sharply. Matteo’s wife had been moved, but Lorenzo did not know whether she was yet with federal agents.

The lie was small and immediate, exactly the kind Isabella had warned him he used too easily.

Matteo began to cry without sound. Lorenzo heard only the changes in his breathing.

“She didn’t know,” Matteo said.

“Then give her the chance to prove it.”

A tactical officer’s voice came through Donnelly’s headset. “Visual on suspect. Level B-two. Infant in carrier. Suspect armed.”

Donnelly whispered, “He has a gun near the child.”

Lorenzo said, “Put the gun on the ground.”

“I can see them.”

“Who?”

“Agents. Red light near the pillar.”

Donnelly cursed and ordered the laser removed.

Matteo’s breathing accelerated.

“You set me up.”

“No. I am standing outside.”

“You brought them.”

“I brought people who know how to recover a child without turning the garage into a graveyard.”

“You brought prison.”

“You built the road there.”

The baby’s crying became a wail.

Matteo said, “She needs Sophia. She hasn’t taken the bottle from anyone else today.”

“Then let her go to Sophia.”

“Dominic has Sophia.”

“Not for long.”

From the second-floor audio came a burst of shouting, then a woman’s scream.

Lorenzo recognized Sophia’s voice.

A gunshot followed.

Emma’s warning echoed in him: Mama gets scared in elevators.

“Donnelly,” he said.

She held up a hand, listening.

“Second floor team has the witness,” she said. “Alive. Shoulder wound. Dominic moving toward west elevator.”

Lorenzo spoke into the phone. “Sophia is alive. Agents have her.”

Matteo’s crying stopped.

“You’re lying.”

Donnelly took the phone.

“Matteo Russo, this is Special Agent Claire Donnelly. Sophia Rossi is alive and receiving medical treatment. Your wife is in protective custody. Place your weapon on the concrete, step away from the infant, and follow the commands of the officers in front of you.”

Matteo did not answer.

Donnelly continued. “You are not leaving that garage. Your choices are now whether the child remains safe and whether you remain alive. Put the gun down.”

Five seconds passed.

Ten.

Then metal struck concrete.

The tactical officer said, “Weapon down.”

Donnelly closed her eyes briefly.

“Suspect stepping back.”

Lorenzo heard agents shouting commands.

Matteo said, very softly, “Tell her I kept the bird.”

Then the phone disconnected.

Lorenzo stood motionless.

Donnelly removed her headset. “Lucia is secure.”

The words did not enter him all at once.

They reached his face first. His mouth opened. No sound came. His knees weakened, and he caught the edge of the table with both hands.
