Chương 3
"Did you love my mom?"
Daniel looked at Emily.
There were years of memories between them.
Good moments.
Broken moments.
Things they never said.
"Yes."
Emily looked away.
Daniel continued.
"But I was not brave enough to protect that love the way I should have."
Lily nodded slowly.
"Then why did you hide me?"
Daniel closed his eyes.
Because the answer was the one he hated most.
"Because I thought I could control everything."
The child listened.
"I thought if I ignored the problem, it would disappear."
He looked at her.
"But you were never a problem."
A tear moved down Lily's cheek.
"I was a secret."
Daniel felt those words hit him harder than anything else.
He looked at Emily.
She was crying silently now.
Not because she wanted revenge.
Because she was watching years of pain finally being acknowledged.
Daniel stood slowly.
He walked toward the large windows overlooking the estate.
Outside, the garden lights illuminated the perfectly arranged landscape.
Everything outside looked beautiful.
Everything inside felt broken.
"When did you stop trusting me?"
Emily answered immediately.
"The night I realized you cared more about what people thought of you than what your family felt."
Daniel closed his eyes.
That night.
He remembered.
The night she begged him to tell the truth.
The night she held newborn Lily and asked him if he could choose love over pride.
And he had failed.
"I thought I was protecting us," he said.
Emily shook her head.
"You were protecting yourself."
The sentence remained in the air.
Daniel did not fight it.
For once, he accepted the truth without trying to reshape it.
Lily slowly walked closer.
Daniel turned around.
She stopped a few feet away from him.
"I don't know if I can trust you again."
Daniel nodded.
He expected those words.
"I understand."
"But I want to know something."
"What?"
"Are you sorry because you got caught?"
Daniel felt his heart break.
"No."
He answered immediately.
"I am sorry because I hurt you before you were old enough to understand why."
Lily looked at him for a long moment.
Then she reached into her pocket.
She pulled out a small photograph.
Daniel recognized it instantly.
It was a picture of him holding Lily when she was a baby.
A picture he thought no longer existed.
"I kept this because I wanted to believe you loved me."
Daniel stared at the photo.
"You always did."
Lily looked confused.
"Then why did you make me feel like you didn't?"
Daniel had no answer.
And that was the hardest truth of all.
Because sometimes love existed inside a person, but fear buried it so deeply that the people who needed it most could never feel it.
Emily gently placed a hand on Lily's shoulder.
The mansion remained quiet.
But this time, the silence was different.
It was not hiding a secret anymore.
It was holding the beginning of a painful truth.
Daniel looked at his daughter and understood that forgiveness would not come from one apology.
It would come from every choice he made after this moment.
And for the first time in his life, he knew there was something more important than winning.
There was something more important than his name.
There was something more important than everything he had built.
There was a little girl standing in front of him, waiting to see if her father would finally become the man he always claimed to be.
There was a little girl standing in front of him, waiting to see if her father would finally become the man he always claimed to be.
Daniel remained still for several seconds, afraid that even a small movement could break the fragile moment between them.
He had spent years making decisions quickly.
He had built companies by trusting instinct.
He had negotiated deals worth millions without hesitation.
But standing in front of Lily, he realized he had no idea what the right thing to do was.
For the first time, he could not rely on power, money, or influence.
He could only rely on honesty.
"I want to know everything," Daniel said quietly.
Emily looked at him.
"What do you mean?"
"I want to know every moment I missed."
His voice was low.
"Every year I was not there."
Lily looked at him carefully.
Daniel continued.
"I know I cannot fix the past."
He paused.
"But I need to understand it."
Emily studied his face.
She searched for the arrogance she had become familiar with over the years.
She expected him to defend himself.
She expected him to find someone else to blame.
But he did not.
He simply stood there waiting for the truth.
"Sit down," Emily said softly.
The three of them moved toward the living room.
The luxurious space that had always represented Daniel's success now felt strangely unfamiliar.
The large leather chairs.
The expensive paintings.
The perfect decorations.
Everything looked different.
Because none of those things could answer the questions sitting between them.
Daniel sat across from Lily.
He kept a careful distance.
He wanted to reach out.
He wanted to hold her hand.
But he knew he had to respect the space she needed.
Emily sat beside Lily.
She took a deep breath.
"When Lily was born, I thought everything would change."
Daniel looked at her.
"I thought seeing her would make you realize what mattered."
His eyes lowered.
"But it didn't."
Emily looked down at her hands.
"You were happy at first."
Daniel looked surprised.
"I was?"
"Yes."
A painful smile appeared on Emily's face.
"You held her for hours."
Daniel felt a memory appear.
A tiny baby wrapped in a white blanket.
A small hand holding his finger.
A feeling he had forgotten because he had spent years running from everything connected to that time.
"You used to tell me she was the most important thing in the world."
Daniel looked at Lily.
"I meant it."
Emily nodded.
"I believe you did."
May you like
That answer surprised him.
"But believing something and acting on it are two different things."
