Chương 2
The words seemed impossible.
Daniel shook his head slowly.
"No."
He looked between them.
"No, that's not possible."
Lily's tears returned.
"I thought you loved me."
Daniel felt his chest tighten.
"I do."
The answer came immediately.
There was no hesitation.
But Lily looked away.
"Then why did you hide me?"
Daniel had no answer.
Because the truth was worse than any accusation.
He had spent years believing he was protecting his family.
But maybe he had been protecting himself.
Emily walked toward the center of the room.
Her voice became stronger.
"You always said you wanted honesty in this family."
Daniel looked at her.
"Yes."
"Then tonight, you finally get it."
The grandfather clock in the corner continued ticking.
Each sound felt louder than the last.
Daniel looked at the staircase where family photographs lined the walls.
Pictures of birthdays.
Vacations.
Celebrations.
Moments he thought proved he had created a perfect life.
Now he wondered how many memories had been built on things he refused to face.
Lily slowly stepped closer.
Daniel wanted to reach for her.
He wanted to hold her.
But he stayed still.
Because for the first time, he understood that love could not be demanded.
It had to be earned.
"I didn't know," he whispered.
Emily looked at him with heartbreak.
"That was always the problem, Daniel."
"You never knew because you never listened."
The words remained between them.
Daniel lowered his eyes.
The man who had convinced thousands of people to trust him could not convince his own child that he deserved another chance.
Lily looked at him one final time.
"I heard everything you tried to hide from me."
Daniel stood frozen.
And in that moment, surrounded by wealth, power, and everything he had spent his life building, he realized he had lost the one thing money could never buy back.
The trust of his daughter.
The trust of his daughter.
Daniel remained standing in the center of the mansion, unable to move.
The silence after Lily's words felt heavier than any accusation he had ever faced.
Emily watched him carefully, waiting for the anger that usually came when Daniel felt cornered.
But it never arrived.
Instead, she saw something she had not seen in years.
A man who was finally afraid of the damage he had caused.
Daniel slowly looked at Lily.
"Can I ask you something?"
Lily did not answer immediately.
She looked at Emily first, searching for permission.
Emily gave a small nod.
"What do you want to ask?"
Daniel swallowed.
"When did you find out?"
Lily lowered her eyes.
"Three months ago."
Daniel's expression changed.
"Three months?"
He looked at Emily.
"You knew?"
Emily nodded.
"I knew she found the letter."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Emily gave a painful smile.
"Because I wanted to see if you would finally remember on your own."
Daniel felt the weight of those words.
He wanted to argue.
He wanted to say that she was unfair.
But deep inside, he knew there was truth in them.
For years, Daniel had controlled every conversation in the house.
He decided what was discussed.
He decided what was forgotten.
He decided what questions were allowed to be asked.
Now he was standing in front of the consequences of that control.
"Where is the letter?"
Daniel asked quietly.
Emily hesitated.
Then she walked toward the elegant wooden cabinet near the living room entrance.
She opened the bottom drawer and removed a small envelope.
The paper looked old.
The edges were worn from years of being hidden and touched.
Daniel stared at it.
He recognized the handwriting before Emily even handed it to him.
His own.
His fingers shook slightly as he took the envelope.
He had written thousands of documents in his life.
Contracts.
Agreements.
Business plans.
But this small piece of paper felt more powerful than all of them combined.
He opened it slowly.
The first words immediately made his stomach tighten.
I don't know how to fix what I have done.
Daniel stopped reading.
A memory flashed through his mind.
The night he wrote it.
He had been younger.
More ambitious.
More afraid of losing control.
He had believed protecting his reputation mattered more than facing the truth.
He continued reading.
I know this child deserves better than the choices I made.
Daniel's vision became blurry.
He looked away from the paper.
"Why did I write this?"
His voice was barely audible.
Emily answered softly.
"Because for a moment, you knew you were wrong."
Daniel closed his eyes.
The memories came back slowly.
Not all at once.
Pieces.
A young woman named Sarah.
A hospital room.
A conversation filled with fear.
The realization that a child existed who carried his blood.
And the terrible decision he made afterward.
"I was scared," Daniel whispered.
Emily looked at him.
"Scared of what?"
Daniel looked around the mansion.
The expensive furniture.
The artwork on the walls.
The things he had collected to prove he had succeeded.
"I was scared that everything I built would disappear."
Emily's expression hardened.
"So you decided Lily had to disappear instead?"
Daniel flinched.
"No."
"That is what happened."
The words hurt because they were true.
Daniel looked at Lily.
"I never wanted you to feel unwanted."
Lily's voice was quiet.
"But I did."
Daniel had no defense.
A thousand explanations came to his mind.
Business pressure.
Family expectations.
Fear.
Mistakes.
But none of them could erase the pain on an eight-year-old girl's face.
He slowly lowered himself until he was closer to her height.
For the first time in years, Daniel Mercer was not standing above anyone.
He was simply a father asking his daughter to hear him.
"Lily, I need you to know something."
She looked at him.
"I was wrong."
The admission surprised everyone in the room.
Especially Daniel himself.
He had spent his entire life avoiding those words.
"I made choices because I was afraid."
His voice became quieter.
May you like
"But my fear hurt people who trusted me."
Lily watched him carefully.
