Chương 3
She looked directly at Michael.
"Your private office building."
The observers in the room exchanged uncomfortable glances.
The carefully controlled image Michael had maintained for years began to crack.
Eleanor watched him carefully.
"How much?"
Michael did not answer.
"How much did you take?"
His silence became the answer.
Daniel stepped back.
"You used me."
Michael looked at him.
"Don't act innocent."
His voice became cold.
"You needed money to hide your failure."
Daniel's face changed.
"You knew."
"Of course I knew."
Michael moved closer.
"I knew everything."
Eleanor felt the room spinning with possibilities.
"You let him make mistakes because it benefited you."
Michael looked at her.
"You built this empire by making hard choices."
His voice became sharper.
"I learned from you."
"No."
Eleanor replied.
"You learned how to take."
Michael's jaw tightened.
The men standing behind him shifted uncomfortably.
They had entered the mansion expecting to witness Eleanor lose control.
Instead, they were watching her regain it.
Eleanor walked toward the large table in the center of the room.
She placed the documents down carefully.
"Nobody leaves this house."
Michael smiled.
"You think you can order everyone around?"
Eleanor looked at him.
"Yes."
The confidence in her answer surprised everyone.
"Because this house, this company, and everything connected to my family exist because I built them."
She reached into her handbag and removed her phone.
"I already sent copies of these documents to my attorney."
Michael's expression changed.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
Daniel looked at his mother.
"You planned this?"
"No."
Eleanor answered.
"I hoped I was wrong."
That sentence carried more pain than anger.
"I hoped there was another explanation."
She looked at Daniel.
"I hoped my son had made a mistake."
Then she looked at Michael.
"But I never imagined both of you would choose to betray me together."
Claire moved closer to Eleanor.
The older woman placed an arm around her granddaughter.
A quiet moment of support passed between them.
Then Daniel spoke.
"Mother."
Eleanor did not look at him.
"I know I hurt you."
He took a breath.
"I know saying sorry doesn't fix it."
She remained silent.
"But I want to help make this right."
Michael immediately laughed.
"You still think she will forgive you?"
Daniel looked at him.
"No."
His voice was firm.
"I don't expect forgiveness."
That surprised Eleanor.
"I just want to stop running from what I did."
For the first time, Eleanor saw something different in her son's face.
Not excuses.
Not fear.
Regret.
She looked toward the windows.
The city lights outside reflected against the glass.
A family that had looked perfect from the outside was now exposed completely.
But perhaps, she thought, the truth was not only the end of something.
Sometimes it was the first moment when something broken could finally begin to heal.
Then Michael's phone suddenly vibrated.
He looked down.
The color drained from his face.
Eleanor noticed.
"What is it?"
Michael quickly locked the screen.
"Nothing."
Claire stepped forward.
"That was not a normal message."
Michael said nothing.
Eleanor walked closer.
"Show me."
He refused.
And that refusal told her everything.
Because whatever was on that phone was not another secret from the past.
It was something happening right now.
Something that could change the entire future of the Whitmore family.
Michael stared at the phone in his hand as if the small screen had suddenly become heavier than anything he had ever carried.
The confidence that had controlled his voice moments earlier was gone.
Eleanor noticed the change immediately.
She had spent decades reading people in business meetings, negotiations, and moments of crisis.
Fear had a very specific expression.
And Michael was afraid.
"Give me the phone."
Her voice was quiet.
Michael looked at her.
"No."
The answer shocked everyone.
Not because he refused.
But because he said it without pretending anymore.
Daniel stepped forward.
"What are you hiding?"
Michael looked at him with a cold expression.
"You are the last person who should ask me that."
Daniel's face tightened.
"I made mistakes."
Michael laughed.
"You made mistakes because you were weak."
The words cut through the room.
Claire looked at Daniel, watching the pain appear on his face.
But before anyone could respond, Eleanor raised her hand.
The room became silent.
"Enough."
She looked at Michael.
"You have spent years manipulating everyone around you."
"You convinced my son that he needed you."
"You convinced my family that you were loyal."
"You convinced yourself that you were untouchable."
She stepped closer.
"But you forgot one thing."
Michael remained silent.
"I built this family by surviving people like you."
The phone in Michael's hand vibrated again.
This time, everyone heard it.
Michael looked down.
Eleanor moved quickly.
"Who is sending those messages?"
Michael locked the screen again.
"That does not concern you."
Eleanor's eyes narrowed.
"Everything involving my family concerns me."
She turned toward one of the men standing near the wall.
"Thomas."
The man immediately looked at her.
"Yes, Mrs. Whitmore."
"Take the phone from him."
Michael's expression changed.
The other men hesitated.
They had always respected Eleanor's authority, but they had never seen her forced to use it against someone inside her own circle.
Michael stepped backward.
"You are making a mistake."
Eleanor did not move.
"No."
She replied.
"I made a mistake twenty years ago when I trusted you."
Thomas approached slowly.
Michael looked around the room, searching for someone who would support him.
Nobody moved.
That silence revealed more than any confession could.
Michael finally handed over the phone.
Thomas brought it to Eleanor.
The screen showed several messages from an unknown number.
The first message was simple.
"She knows everything."
The second message appeared only moments earlier.
"Get out before they find the final documents."
Eleanor felt her heartbeat slow.
Final documents.
Those words mattered.
She looked at Michael.
"What final documents?"
Michael said nothing.
Daniel stepped closer.
"There are more?"
Michael remained silent.
May you like
Eleanor looked at the phone again.
The messages were not from a stranger.
