Chương 2

The betrayal was deeper than money.
It was arrogance.
He did not regret hurting her.
He regretted being caught.
Claire watched her grandmother carefully.
She saw the pain behind Eleanor's expression.
The woman who had always appeared impossible to break was finally showing how much this moment had hurt.
Eleanor looked at the envelope again.
Then she looked at Michael.
"You should have known better than to underestimate me."
Michael's eyes narrowed.
"And what exactly are you going to do?"
Before Eleanor could answer, Daniel moved closer.
"Michael, stop."
Everyone looked at him.
Michael turned.
"Are you defending her now?"
Daniel hesitated.
"No."
He said quietly.
"I'm admitting that we went too far."
The words shocked everyone.
Daniel looked at his mother.
"I thought I was protecting the family."
Eleanor's expression remained guarded.
"But you were protecting yourself."
He lowered his head.
"Yes."
The honesty hurt more than another lie.
Eleanor had waited years for her son to admit his mistakes.
But hearing it now felt like losing something she could never get back.
Claire moved beside her grandmother.
"I didn't want this to destroy everyone."
Eleanor placed a hand over Claire's.
"The truth does not destroy families."
She whispered.
"Lies do."
Michael suddenly stepped forward.
His controlled expression disappeared.
"You think you have won because everyone is looking at me."
His voice became sharper.
"But you have no idea what else is hidden."
Eleanor looked at him carefully.
"What does that mean?"
Michael smiled slightly.
A smile that made the entire room uncomfortable.
"It means you should ask your son why he really needed that money."
Daniel immediately turned pale.
Eleanor slowly turned toward him.
The silence returned.
This time it was different.
This time it carried fear.
Daniel looked at his mother, knowing the next truth would change everything.
And Eleanor realized the documents in her hands were only the beginning of a secret that had been buried inside her family for far too long.
Daniel looked at the floor for several seconds before finally lifting his eyes toward Eleanor.
The confident businessman who had walked into the mansion that evening was gone.
What remained was a son who looked trapped between shame and fear.
Eleanor tightened her grip on the envelope.
"Daniel."
Her voice was calm, but everyone in the room felt the weight behind it.
"What did Michael mean?"
Daniel swallowed.
"I was going to tell you."
Eleanor's expression did not change.
"When?"
He remained silent.
"When everything collapsed?"
Daniel closed his eyes briefly.
The answer was obvious.
Claire looked between them, confused and hurt.
"Daniel, what is he talking about?"
Daniel looked at his daughter.
And for the first time that night, he seemed unable to hide behind excuses.
"I made a mistake."
Michael gave a quiet laugh from the side of the room.
"A mistake?"
He shook his head.
"That is a convenient word for someone who almost destroyed everything."
Daniel turned sharply.
"Don't pretend you are innocent."
The room froze.
Michael's confident expression disappeared for a moment.
Eleanor noticed the reaction.
There was history between them.
Something far deeper than the documents she had found.
"Explain."
She said.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Eleanor looked at her son.
"Now."
Daniel took a slow breath.
"When the company expanded five years ago, we had an opportunity to acquire a new division overseas."
"I believed it would become the next major part of the business."
"It was a risk."
Eleanor interrupted.
"You made investments without my approval."
Daniel nodded slowly.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because I thought if I waited for you, you would say no."
Eleanor stared at him.
"And you decided that gave you the right to hide millions of dollars from me?"
Daniel looked away.
"No."
His voice became quieter.
"It doesn't."
Michael stepped forward.
"But he is leaving out the important part."
Eleanor turned toward him.
"Then you tell me."
Michael looked satisfied.
Almost relieved.
"The investment failed."
Nobody reacted.
They already suspected that.
But Michael continued.
"The company lost more money than Daniel admitted."
Claire covered her mouth.
Daniel looked at Michael with anger.
"Stop."
"No."
Michael replied.
"You wanted to protect your image."
He looked at Eleanor.
"He started moving company funds to cover the losses."
The room became silent again.
Eleanor felt a sharp pain in her chest.
Not because of the money.
Because of the choice.
Her son had chosen deception.
Daniel immediately stepped closer.
"I was trying to fix it."
Eleanor looked at him.
"You lied to me."
"I was afraid."
"Afraid of what?"
Daniel's eyes filled with emotion.
"Of becoming a disappointment."
The words hit harder than Eleanor expected.
For a moment, she saw not the businessman in front of her, but the little boy who used to sit beside her desk while she worked late nights.
The boy who once told her he wanted to build something that would make her proud.
But the memory could not erase what he had done.
"You were afraid of disappointing me."
She whispered.
"So you became someone I could not trust."
Daniel lowered his head.
Michael watched quietly.
But Claire noticed something.
A small expression crossed Michael's face.
Not satisfaction.
Concern.
She stepped forward.
"Wait."
Everyone looked at her.
Claire looked at Michael.
"If Daniel was trying to cover the losses, why were you involved?"
Michael's eyes moved toward her.
"I was helping him."
Claire shook her head.
"No."
Her voice became stronger.
"You were helping yourself."
Michael's expression hardened.
"You don't know what you are talking about."
Claire lifted the envelope slightly.
"I know enough."
She looked at Eleanor.
"The documents I found were not only about Daniel's transfers."
She paused.
"They also show payments made to companies connected to Michael."
Daniel looked shocked.
"What?"
Eleanor turned toward him.
"You didn't know?"
Daniel slowly shook his head.
"No."
Michael's face finally showed real anger.
"You are all making assumptions."
Claire opened another document.
"I checked the names."
May you like
Her hands were still trembling, but her voice was steady now.
"The companies receiving the money all have the same registered address."
