Chương 2

"I'm sorry," he said quietly.
"I didn't mean to interrupt."
Emily wiped her eyes and stood slowly.
"Doctor, she knows."
The doctor looked at Lily with compassion.
"I think she deserves the truth."
Lily looked between them.
"What truth?"
Doctor Harris walked closer but kept his voice gentle.
"The blood test revealed information connected to your biological family."
Lily's eyes widened.
"My biological family?"
Emily closed her eyes.
Those words were finally spoken aloud.
For years, she had protected Lily from a painful truth.
Now she wondered if hiding it had caused more pain.
"You were only a few months old when I found you," Emily whispered.
Lily looked confused.
"What do you mean found me?"
Emily reached for her hand again.
"I never told you because I was afraid you would think I didn't love you."
Tears slowly moved down her face.
"But loving you was the easiest thing I have ever done."
Lily stared at her.
"You are my mom."
Emily looked up.
The sentence broke through every fear she had carried.
"Yes," Emily whispered.
"I am."
Doctor Harris watched them quietly.
He had seen many difficult moments in his career.
But he knew this was not just a medical discovery.
This was a family being forced to redefine what family meant.
"The test results also revealed something else," the doctor said.
Emily looked at him carefully.
"What else?"
He opened the folder.
"The people connected to Lily's biological records have been searching for her for years."
Lily held Emily's hand tighter.
"Why?"
The doctor looked at the little girl with a serious but gentle expression.
"Because they never stopped hoping they would find you."
Emily felt her heart race.
A secret she had buried for years was finally coming to the surface.
But as she looked at Lily, she realized one thing.
No matter what the test revealed.
No matter who came looking.
No matter what happened next.
She would always be the person who held Lily's hand when she was afraid.
And Lily would always be the child who changed her life forever.
The days that followed changed the way Lily looked at every memory she had ever collected.
She began searching through her childhood moments, trying to understand which parts of her life were connected to the truth she had never known.
She remembered Emily singing softly when she could not sleep.
She remembered Emily making pancakes on Sunday mornings even when she was exhausted from work.
She remembered Emily sitting beside her during thunderstorms and promising that nothing could hurt her while they were together.
None of those memories felt fake.
If anything, they felt stronger now.
But the idea that another family existed somewhere in the world made Lily feel like she was standing between two different lives.
Emily noticed the confusion in her eyes.
She knew the questions were coming before Lily asked them.
That night, after Doctor Harris left the room, Emily stayed beside the bed while the hallway lights outside slowly dimmed.
The hospital became quieter as nurses moved from room to room and machines continued their soft rhythm.
Lily stared at the ceiling for a long time before finally speaking.
"Did you know about them before today?"
Emily looked down at their hands.
She did not want to answer with a lie.
"No," she whispered.
"I knew something about your past was missing, but I never knew who they were."
Lily turned toward her.
"What do you mean?"
Emily took a slow breath.
"When I found you, you were only a baby."
Her voice became heavier with every word.
"I was younger then, and I was not expecting my life to change."
Lily listened carefully.
Emily had told her stories about her childhood before, but never this one.
"I found you outside an old community center during a storm," Emily continued.
"You were wrapped in a small blanket, and there was a note beside you."
Lily's eyes widened.
"There was a note?"
Emily nodded.
"I kept it all these years."
"Why didn't you show me?"
Emily looked away.
"Because I was afraid."
Lily frowned slightly.
"Afraid of what?"
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
"Afraid that one day you would read it and think I was only someone who took care of you until your real family came back."
Lily immediately squeezed her hand.
"But you are my mom."
The words came without hesitation.
Emily looked at her daughter and felt a pain that was both heartbreaking and comforting.
"I know," she said softly.
"But sometimes fear does not listen to logic."
The next morning, Doctor Harris returned with more information.
He carried a folder filled with documents, but his expression was gentler than before.
Emily immediately noticed.
"Did you find something?"
The doctor pulled a chair closer.
"We received confirmation from the genetic database."
Lily looked nervous.
Emily moved closer to her.
"Tell us."
Doctor Harris opened the folder.
"The match is with a family who reported their infant daughter missing eight years ago."
The room became silent.
Lily looked at Emily.
Emily covered her mouth with her hand.
Eight years.
The same amount of time Lily had been in her life.
"Their names are Daniel and Sarah Bennett," Doctor Harris explained.
"They have spent years searching for their daughter."
Lily listened quietly.
She had imagined finding a family before.
But she never imagined hearing their names.
"Do they know about me?" she asked.
The doctor nodded slowly.
"They know a possible match has been found, but they have not met you yet."
Lily looked frightened.
"What if they don't like me?"
Emily's heart broke hearing the question.
She immediately leaned closer.
"Lily, anyone who has been searching for you for eight years already loves you."
"But what if I am different from what they expected?"
Emily held her face gently.
"You do not have to become someone else for anyone."
Lily looked into her eyes.
"You mean that?"
May you like
"I mean it more than anything."
Later that afternoon, Emily finally opened the old wooden box she had kept hidden at home.
