Chương 1

"The first time Lily opened her eyes that morning, she knew something was different because the room felt quieter than usual.

The steady beeping of the monitor beside her hospital bed sounded like a reminder that time was moving even when she felt too tired to move herself.

She stared at the ceiling tiles above her and tried to remember the last moment when everything in her life had felt normal.

Only a few weeks earlier, she had been running through the backyard with her favorite yellow sweater and laughing while her mother watched from the porch.

Now she was lying beneath a white hospital blanket, surrounded by machines, medical papers, and conversations that adults stopped whenever she entered the room.

The hardest part was not the illness.

The hardest part was the feeling that everyone knew a secret except her.

Lily turned her head slowly toward the empty chair beside her bed and wondered if her mother would come back.

For three days, she had watched the same woman sit beside her, hold her hand, and then look away whenever the doctors mentioned her blood tests.

The woman always said everything was going to be okay, but her eyes told a different story.

Lily knew that look because she had seen it in movies.

It was the look people had when they were afraid of losing something they loved.

The door opened quietly, and Emily stepped into the room holding a small paper cup of coffee that had already gone cold.

Emily was thirty-five years old, but the exhaustion on her face made her look much older.

She had barely slept since Lily was admitted.

She had spent every night sitting beside the hospital bed, pretending to be strong while silently breaking apart.

When Lily saw her, she forced a small smile.

"You're back," Lily whispered.

Emily walked closer and placed the coffee on the table without drinking it.

"Of course I am," she replied softly.

Her voice sounded calm, but there was a hidden sadness behind every word.

Lily watched her carefully.

She noticed how Emily avoided looking directly at her.

She noticed how her fingers shook slightly when she adjusted the blanket.

She noticed how every time the doctors walked into the room, Emily looked like she was preparing for terrible news.

"Mom," Lily said quietly.

Emily froze for a second.

The word still affected her every time she heard it.

She had raised Lily since she was a baby.

She had been there for every birthday, every nightmare, every fever, and every scraped knee.

But recently, a question had entered her mind that she never wanted to face.

What if being a mother was not only about the years they shared?

What if a secret from the past could take everything away?

Emily sat beside the bed and gently touched Lily's hair.

"You need to rest," she said.

"But you look scared," Lily answered.

Emily forced a smile.

"I'm just tired."

Lily looked at her for several seconds.

Children often noticed the truths adults tried hardest to hide.

"You always say that when something is wrong," Lily whispered.

Emily looked down at the floor.

She wanted to tell her everything.

She wanted to explain the phone call she received from the hospital.

She wanted to explain the doctor who asked her to come in alone.

She wanted to explain the test results that had changed the way she saw the entire world.

But she was afraid.

Not because she did not love Lily.

Because she loved her too much.

The previous afternoon, Doctor Michael Harris had asked Emily to sit in his office.

The room had been small and cold, with medical charts stacked neatly on a desk.

He had looked at her with a serious expression before speaking.

"Emily, we need to discuss Lily's blood test results."

Emily remembered holding her breath.

She expected information about treatment.

She expected another difficult conversation about medicine.

She never expected what came next.

"The results show something unusual," the doctor had said.

"What kind of unusual?" Emily asked.

Doctor Harris had opened the file slowly.

"Lily's genetic markers do not match the family history you provided."

Emily had stared at him, unable to understand.

She had heard the words, but they felt impossible.

"What are you saying?"

The doctor had paused before answering.

"I'm saying there may be something about Lily's identity that you do not know."

Those words had followed Emily all night.

They had followed her into the hospital room.

They had followed her every time Lily called her Mom.

Now, standing beside the bed, Emily realized she could not hide forever.

"I need to tell you something," Emily whispered.

Lily looked at her immediately.

"What is it?"

Emily opened her mouth, but before she could speak, Lily suddenly grabbed her hand.

The movement was weak, but desperate.

Emily looked down at their hands.

Lily's fingers were trembling around hers.

"Mom," Lily whispered.

Her voice carried a fear that broke Emily's heart.

"Before you leave forever, you need to know what the doctor found in my blood."

Emily's face changed instantly.

She had never told Lily about the doctor.

She had never told Lily that she was worried.

She stared at the little girl in front of her and felt the world stop.

"Who told you that?" Emily asked.

Lily swallowed slowly.

"I heard you talking yesterday."

Emily felt a sharp pain in her chest.

"You were sleeping," Lily continued.

"But I wasn't."

The monitor beside the bed continued making quiet sounds.

The hospital room suddenly felt much smaller.

"What did you hear?" Emily asked.

Lily looked down at their hands.

"I heard the doctor say something about my real family."

Emily's eyes filled with emotion.

She wanted to deny it.

She wanted to say Lily misunderstood.

But she could not lie anymore.

"Lily..."

The door opened softly behind them.

Doctor Harris stepped into the room with a folder in his hand.

He immediately noticed the emotion between them.
