Chương 5

Daniel sat beside her.

"I am too."

Thomas walked into the room carefully.

For the first time, everyone connected to the mystery was together.

A father who lost his daughter.

A grandmother who hid the truth.

A man who helped hide the truth.

And a child who had spent her life surrounded by questions.

Thomas looked at Lily.

"I am sorry."

Lily studied his face.

"Do I know you?"

Thomas shook his head.

"No."

"But I knew you when you were little."

"Before everything changed."

Lily looked confused.

"Why would you help someone hide me?"

Thomas closed his eyes.

"Because I believed a lie."

Daniel crossed his arms.

"What lie?"

Thomas took a deep breath.

"Your grandfather told me Daniel was dangerous."

Daniel stared at him.

"What?"

"He told me you were unstable."

"He told me you were planning to take Lily away."

"That is insane."

"I know that now."

Thomas looked ashamed.

"But at the time, I believed him."

Margaret looked stunned.

"Why would he say that?"

Thomas looked at her.

"Because he wanted control."

Nobody spoke.

The answer was painful because it was simple.

Daniel's father had spent years building an image of a powerful, respected man.

But behind that image was someone willing to destroy his own family to protect his influence.

"My father hated that I wanted a different life," Daniel said quietly.

Thomas nodded.

"He thought you were wasting the family name."

"He thought Lily belonged to the family, not to you."

Lily frowned.

"I'm not something someone owns."

Thomas looked at her sadly.

"You're right."

"That was the mistake everyone made."

Margaret sat down slowly.

"I trusted him."

Thomas looked at her.

"He knew you would."

"Why?"

"Because he knew you loved Lily more than anything."

Margaret looked hurt.

"He used my love against me."

"Yes."

Daniel looked at Thomas.

"What happened the night I disappeared?"

Thomas hesitated.

Then he reached into his coat and pulled out a small envelope.

"I kept this because I could not destroy it."

Daniel took it carefully.

Inside was an old letter.

The paper was worn from years of being hidden.

Daniel recognized the handwriting immediately.

His father's handwriting.

He unfolded it.

The first line made his hands shake.

Daniel,

If you are reading this, then my plan failed.

Daniel continued reading silently.

His expression changed with every sentence.

Margaret watched him.

"What does it say?"

Daniel did not answer at first.

Finally, he spoke.

"He knew."

Thomas nodded.

"He knew you would survive."

Daniel looked up.

"He planned everything."

The room felt colder.

Thomas looked at the floor.

"Your father wanted to force you back into the family business."

"When you refused, he decided to punish you."

Daniel's eyes filled with anger.

"He took my daughter."

Thomas shook his head.

"He did not physically take her."

"He created a situation where everyone believed separating you was necessary."

Margaret covered her mouth.

"How could someone do that?"

Thomas answered quietly.

"Because he convinced himself he was protecting the family."

Daniel folded the letter.

"He destroyed it."

"He destroyed my family."

Thomas nodded.

"Yes."

Lily reached for Daniel's hand.

He held onto hers immediately.

She looked at the letter.

"Does it say why?"

Daniel looked at her.

He did not want to share more pain with her.

But she deserved the truth.

"It says he thought I was too weak to lead."

Lily looked confused.

"Lead what?"

Daniel gave a sad smile.

"A company."

"The company your grandfather built."

Lily looked between them.

"So all of this happened because of money?"

Thomas shook his head.

"No."

"Money was only the excuse."

"The real reason was control."

Margaret stood and walked toward Thomas.

"You could have told us."

"I should have."

"You let us suffer."

"I know."

Her anger finally broke through.

"I spent years believing Daniel abandoned Lily."

"I spent years telling a child that her father was gone."

Thomas looked devastated.

"I know."

"Nothing I say can fix that."

Daniel watched them.

He saw two people who had made terrible choices.

But he also saw people trapped by fear.

The difference was that Lily had been the one paying the price.

A soft alarm sounded from the medical monitor.

Everyone immediately turned.

Lily looked uncomfortable.

The nurse entered quickly.

"Everything is okay."

She checked the monitor.

"She just needs rest."

Daniel nodded.

The nurse looked around the room.

"There seems to be a lot happening here."

Nobody responded.

After she left, Daniel looked at Thomas.

"Where is my father's evidence?"

Thomas looked surprised.

"What evidence?"

"The evidence that proves everything."

Thomas hesitated.

Then he reached into his pocket.

"There is one more thing."

He pulled out a small key.

"I kept this for nine years."

Daniel looked at it.

"What does it open?"

Thomas looked toward Margaret.

Then toward Lily.

"A storage box."

"Inside is everything your father tried to hide."

Daniel took the key.

"Where?"

Thomas looked serious.

"At the old family house."

Margaret's face changed.

"The house was sold."

Thomas shook his head.

"No."

"It was never sold."

"It was hidden."

Daniel looked at the key in his hand.

Another secret waited for them.

Another piece of the past was ready to be uncovered.

He looked at Lily.

"We are going to find the truth."

Lily squeezed his hand.

This time, she believed him.

The road ahead was still filled with pain, but the first step had already been taken.

Finding the hidden evidence was the only way to finally understand everything that had been taken from them.

Daniel stayed awake that night beside Lily's hospital bed, holding the small key in his palm.

The metal felt cold, but the memories attached to it felt even colder.

For years, he had searched for a person who was never allowed to be found.
