Chương 2
Daniel nodded.
"Yes."
Ethan looked down.
"Then why didn't anyone tell her?"
Nobody answered.
Because everyone in the room knew the truth was more complicated than a simple explanation.
Margaret slowly stood and faced Daniel.
"There is something else you need to know."
Daniel's expression tightened.
He had spent years searching for answers.
He had learned that every answer seemed to reveal another hidden wound.
"What else did you keep from me?"
Margaret took a deep breath.
"Your disappearance was not an accident."
Daniel stared at her.
"What are you saying?"
Margaret looked toward Lily.
Then she looked back at Daniel.
"Someone wanted you gone."
The monitor beside Lily continued its steady rhythm.
The rain outside became heavier.
Daniel's face changed from confusion to fear.
"Who?"
Margaret's hands began to shake.
"I don't know everything."
"But I know someone changed the records."
"I know someone made it look like you abandoned Lily."
"And I know that person was close to this family."
Lily looked frightened.
Daniel moved toward her immediately.
He placed his hand gently over hers.
"I am here now."
Lily looked at him.
"Are you going to disappear again?"
Daniel felt tears form in his eyes.
"No."
He squeezed her hand carefully.
"Nothing will take me away from you again."
Margaret watched them together.
For the first time in years, she allowed herself to accept that love did not belong to only one person.
She had tried to protect Lily by controlling the truth.
But the truth had always belonged to Lily.
Daniel looked at Margaret.
"Tell me everything."
Margaret nodded slowly.
"But when I do, you will understand why I was so afraid."
Daniel looked toward the hospital window where the city lights blurred through the rain.
He knew the reunion he dreamed about would not be simple.
He knew the years they lost could never return.
But Lily's hand was in his.
And for the first time in nine years, he felt like he had finally found his way home.
Daniel kept holding Lily's hand while the silence inside the hospital room grew heavier.
Margaret walked slowly toward the window and looked out at the city below.
For several seconds, she said nothing because she knew the next words would change everything.
"I need to start from the beginning," Margaret finally whispered.
Daniel pulled a chair closer to Lily's bed and sat down.
"I have waited nine years for this moment."
"I am listening."
Margaret nodded, but her eyes stayed fixed on the rain.
"Nine years ago, after Lily was born, everything in our family changed."
"Your relationship with Lily's mother was already falling apart."
Daniel looked down.
"Her mother and I were having problems, but we were trying to fix them."
"I know," Margaret replied.
"That is what makes what happened even harder."
Lily watched them carefully.
She had spent her whole life feeling like there were missing pieces in her story.
Now those missing pieces were finally appearing, but each one seemed painful.
"After the accident," Margaret continued, "everyone believed you were gone."
Daniel's expression tightened.
"What accident?"
Margaret turned toward him.
"The car crash on the highway."
Daniel stared at her in confusion.
"I was never in a car crash."
Margaret's face changed.
She looked like she had just realized something terrifying.
"That is impossible."
"Why?"
"Because the police report said your vehicle was found near the highway."
Daniel slowly shook his head.
"My vehicle was stolen."
The room became completely still.
Margaret stepped back.
"No one told me that."
"Because someone wanted you to believe the wrong story."
Daniel's voice became quieter.
"I remember that night."
"I was driving home after work."
"I stopped at a gas station."
"When I came back outside, my car was gone."
"I reported it immediately."
"But the next morning, my phone was destroyed, my wallet was missing, and someone had used my identity."
Margaret looked at him with disbelief.
"Why didn't I know any of this?"
"Because you were told I abandoned Lily."
Margaret closed her eyes.
The memory was painful.
"I remember the day someone came to my house."
"Who?"
Margaret hesitated.
"A man who claimed he was helping Lily's mother."
Daniel leaned forward.
"What man?"
"I do not know his real name."
"But he knew things only someone close to us would know."
Lily's fingers moved slightly against Daniel's hand.
"Dad?"
Daniel looked at her immediately.
"I am here."
"Did someone try to take me away?"
Daniel swallowed hard.
"I do not know yet."
Lily looked scared.
Margaret sat beside her.
"I never wanted you to be afraid."
"But I was already afraid," Lily whispered.
Those words hurt Margaret more than anger would have.
She lowered her head.
"I know."
"I made choices because I thought I was saving you."
"But I should have told you the truth."
Daniel looked at Margaret.
"What happened after you were told I was gone?"
Margaret took a deep breath.
"Lily's mother disappeared a few months later."
Daniel froze.
"What?"
"She left without explanation."
"She left Lily with me."
"She said she needed time."
"Then she never came back."
Daniel looked toward Lily.
The little girl looked confused.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?"
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
"Because every time I tried to find answers, I found another lie."
Daniel stood and walked slowly across the room.
His anger was controlled, but every movement showed the pain he carried.
"Someone stole my daughter from me."
Margaret nodded.
"Yes."
"And you knew something was wrong."
"Yes."
"And you stayed silent."
Margaret looked at him.
"Yes."
The honesty made the room even quieter.
Daniel wanted to be angry.
He wanted to blame her.
But when he saw the tears in her eyes, he realized she had been carrying her own pain for years.
"Why didn't you contact me when you found out Lily might still be alive?"
Margaret looked toward the bedside table.
