Chương 2

“You’re safe with me.”

The words were quiet, but they carried a promise.

The baby stared back with tired, emotional eyes.

She did not know about secrets.

She did not know about old wounds.

She only knew the feeling of being held by someone who wanted to protect her.

Across the room, the lace-dress woman watched them.

Her serious expression softened slightly.

The conflict inside her became impossible to hide.

The celebration continued around them, but the three of them remained trapped in a moment that felt separate from the rest of the world.

The cake remained untouched on the table.

The guests remained silent.

And the truth that had been hidden beneath smiles and beautiful decorations was finally beginning to rise to the surface.

The silence between the three of them felt heavier than the music playing softly in the background.

The guests slowly returned to their conversations, but their voices remained quieter than before.

Everyone could sense that something important had happened, even if nobody understood what it was.

The woman holding the baby kept her eyes on the lace-dress woman.

She waited for an explanation, but the other woman looked away.

For years, she had imagined this moment happening differently.

She had imagined anger.

She had imagined accusations.

She had imagined a confrontation filled with shouting.

But she had never imagined standing there with a child in her arms while the truth slowly revealed itself through fear and silence.

The baby shifted slightly against her shoulder.

The woman immediately focused on her again.

She gently brushed away the tears on the baby’s cheek.

The little girl looked exhausted from crying.

Her tiny fingers still held onto the fabric of the woman’s dress as if she was afraid to let go.

The woman lowered her voice.

“You’re okay.”

“You’re with me.”

The baby slowly relaxed.

Her breathing became calmer.

But the woman’s own heart was still racing.

She looked back toward the table.

The small piece of cake remained exactly where it had fallen.

It looked harmless.

It looked like nothing more than a simple dessert from a beautiful evening.

Yet somehow, it had changed everything.

The lace-dress woman noticed where she was looking.

Her expression tightened.

She knew the question was coming.

She knew she could no longer avoid it.

“That cake was never supposed to be given to her.”

The words came out quietly.

The woman holding the baby froze.

“What do you mean?”

The lace-dress woman looked around the room before answering.

She seemed afraid that the walls themselves might hear the truth.

“There was something inside the recipe that I recognized.”

The woman holding the baby frowned.

“What are you talking about?”

The lace-dress woman took a slow breath.

“It was made from the same recipe my family used years ago.”

The explanation sounded strange, almost impossible.

The woman holding the baby looked confused.

“A recipe?”

The lace-dress woman nodded slowly.

“But it is not just a recipe.”

Her eyes moved toward the baby.

“It is connected to her.”

The woman holding the baby immediately tightened her arms.

Her protective instincts returned.

“You need to explain that carefully.”

The lace-dress woman looked down.

“I know how this sounds.”

“No.”

“You don’t.”

The response was calm but firm.

“You are standing here telling me something about my child while she is crying in my arms.”

The lace-dress woman closed her eyes for a moment.

She knew she deserved that anger.

“I found something hidden inside the old documents.”

“What documents?”

“Family documents.”

The room seemed to become colder.

The woman holding the baby waited.

The lace-dress woman continued.

“Before tonight, I believed the past was finished.”

“But when I saw that cake, I realized it was not.”

The baby looked between them with tired eyes.

She did not understand the conversation.

She only felt the emotions surrounding her.

The lace-dress woman stepped closer, but stopped when she saw the woman’s protective stance.

“I am not trying to hurt her.”

“Then why did she become scared?”

The lace-dress woman looked at the baby.

Her eyes filled with regret.

“Because she recognized my reaction.”

The woman holding the baby became silent.

“What does that mean?”

The lace-dress woman struggled to find the right words.

“She has seen people argue before.”

“She has felt tension before.”

“But tonight, when she saw me look at that cake, she felt the fear in me.”

The woman holding the baby looked down at the child.

The explanation was painful because it made sense.

Children often noticed things adults tried to hide.

The baby had not understood the secret.

She had only understood that something was wrong.

The lace-dress woman reached into her purse.

For a moment, the woman holding the baby became alert.

But instead of pulling out anything threatening, the woman revealed an old folded photograph.

The edges were worn.

The picture looked like it had been carried for many years.

“I brought this because I knew this day might come.”

The woman holding the baby stared at the photograph.

“What is it?”

The lace-dress woman slowly opened it.

Inside was a picture of a woman holding a baby.

The image was old, faded, and slightly damaged.

But there was something familiar about the child in the photograph.

The woman holding the baby looked closer.

Her expression changed.

She recognized the face.

Not completely.

Not perfectly.

But enough to make her heart stop.

“That baby…”

The lace-dress woman nodded.

“Yes.”

The woman holding the baby looked back at the little girl in her arms.

The similarities were impossible to ignore.

The same eyes.

The same small expression.

The same innocent face.

A thousand questions appeared at once.

The lace-dress woman whispered.

“I should have told you sooner.”

The woman holding the baby felt anger and confusion fighting inside her.

“Why didn’t you?”

The lace-dress woman looked down.

“Because I was afraid.”

“Afraid of what?”

“Afraid that the truth would destroy everything.”

May you like

The woman holding the baby stared at her.

“You don’t get to decide that.”
