Chương 1

"The baby had never understood why the room felt so different that evening.
The lights were brighter than usual, the voices around her were louder, and every unfamiliar face seemed to move in slow motion around the elegant reception hall.
She sat near the edge of a polished table, wearing a delicate white dress that made her look even smaller among the towering adults surrounding her.
Her short light-colored hair reflected the warm golden lights above, while her tiny hands carefully held a small rectangular piece of soft cake with a pale yellow interior and a smooth white outer layer.
She did not know that the simple piece of food in her hands would soon change the entire night.
She only knew that it was sweet, soft, and comforting.
The baby leaned forward slightly and brought the cake closer to her mouth.
Her small fingers pressed gently into the soft surface as she took another careful bite.
Her eyes remained focused on the treat, filled with innocent curiosity and complete trust.
Around her, guests continued their conversations, unaware of the fragile moment happening in front of them.
A blonde woman in her thirties watched from a short distance away.
She wore elegant formal clothing that matched the sophisticated atmosphere of the event, but her attention was not on the decorations or the guests.
Her eyes stayed locked on the child.
There was something about the baby’s expression that made her heart feel heavy.
The woman had always been protective of the little girl, and even a small change in the baby’s behavior immediately caught her attention.
At first, everything seemed normal.
The baby continued eating quietly.
Then her movements slowed.
Her tiny hands stopped for a moment.
Her eyes lifted from the cake and searched the room as if she suddenly felt something was wrong.
The woman noticed the change immediately.
She stepped closer, her eyebrows rising with concern.
The baby looked back at her with watery eyes.
Her lower lip began to tremble.
The sweet comfort she had felt only moments earlier disappeared, replaced by confusion and fear.
The woman reached forward quickly.
She carefully grabbed the baby and lifted her away from the table.
The sudden movement startled the child.
The baby released a small cry and reached toward the cake that had fallen behind on the table.
The woman pulled her close, holding her against her chest with protective arms.
The baby’s crying grew louder as her tiny hands clutched the woman’s clothing.
The woman’s expression changed from concern to deep worry.
She looked into the baby’s eyes, searching for an answer.
“Why is my baby crying like this?”
Her voice carried through the quiet space between the nearby guests.
The words were filled with fear rather than anger.
She did not understand what had happened.
She only knew that the child she cared about was suddenly upset.
The baby pressed her face against the woman’s shoulder.
Her breathing became uneven.
Small tears gathered along her cheeks as she tried to calm herself.
The woman gently rubbed the baby’s back.
“Look at me, sweetheart.”
“I’m right here.”
Her voice was soft and reassuring, the kind of voice meant to make a frightened child feel safe again.
But the tension in the room did not disappear.
Several guests had stopped talking.
They watched the scene with confused expressions.
The elegant celebration that had seemed perfect moments earlier now felt filled with uncertainty.
The woman holding the baby slowly looked around.
That was when she noticed another blonde woman standing near the entrance of the hall.
The second woman wore a beautiful white lace formal dress.
Her appearance was graceful, but her expression revealed something different.
She looked tense.
Her eyebrows were raised.
Her lips were pressed tightly together.
She looked like someone carrying a secret she could no longer hide.
The woman holding the baby stared at her.
For several seconds, neither person moved.
The baby remained in the protective embrace, still breathing heavily after crying.
The woman in the lace dress slowly stepped forward.
Each step felt heavier than the last.
The guests around them sensed that something deeper was happening.
This was no longer about a child crying.
This was about something everyone in the room had been avoiding.
The lace-dress woman stopped a few feet away.
Her eyes moved toward the baby.
Then they moved toward the piece of cake still sitting on the table.
A strange expression crossed her face.
It was not anger.
It was fear.
The woman holding the baby noticed.
She tightened her arms around the child.
Her body became more defensive.
“You don’t get to scare my child.”
Her voice was firm, but the emotion behind it was clear.
She was not trying to start a fight.
She was trying to protect someone too small to protect herself.
The lace-dress woman swallowed hard.
“I never wanted this to happen.”
Her voice sounded defensive, but sadness was hidden underneath.
The room became silent.
The baby slowly opened her eyes and looked between the two women.
She did not understand the words.
She only understood the emotions.
She felt the tension in their voices.
She felt the stiffness in their bodies.
The woman holding her lowered her head and whispered comforting sounds.
She wanted the child to feel safe again.
But questions filled her own mind.
Why had the baby reacted that way?
Why did the other woman look so frightened?
And why did a simple piece of cake seem to carry so much meaning?
The lace-dress woman looked away.
For a brief moment, guilt appeared on her face.
It was the expression of someone who had been holding onto a painful truth for too long.
The woman holding the baby noticed that hesitation.
She realized this was not a random misunderstanding.
Something had happened before this moment.
Something nobody had explained.
The baby slowly stopped crying.

Her fingers relaxed against the woman’s clothing.
The woman gently adjusted the child in her arms and looked down at her.
