Chương 5

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“You weren’t there when I lost my first tooth.”
Her voice became smaller.
“I saved it because I thought you would want to see it.”
Emily covered her mouth for a moment.
She had missed so many moments she could never get back.
“I’m sorry.”
Lily looked at her.
“I don’t want you to say sorry.”
Emily touched her cheek gently.
“What do you want me to say?”
The little girl thought for a long time.
“I want you to say you’re not leaving again.”
Emily immediately answered.
“I’m not leaving again.”
Lily searched her face.
“Promise?”
Emily nodded.
“I promise.”
James glanced at them through the mirror.
For years, he had watched Lily carry a sadness that was too heavy for a child.
Tonight was the first time he saw a small piece of that sadness disappear.
When they arrived at the house where Emily would stay temporarily, James opened the door for them.
The place was quiet and warm.
It was not the mansion where Ryan had created his perfect image.
It was a simple home filled with comfortable furniture, family photographs, and reminders that real life did not need to look perfect to be meaningful.
Lily walked inside slowly.
She looked around.
“Is this where we stay?”
Emily smiled gently.
“For now.”
Lily looked at James.
“Is he staying too?”
James smiled softly.
“If you need me to.”
Lily nodded.
She trusted him.
That trust meant more to James than she could understand.
Later that night, Emily sat beside Lily’s bed.
The little girl was still awake.
The events of the day replayed in her mind.
“Mommy?”
“Yes?”
“Was the wedding supposed to be yours?”
Emily looked surprised.
“What do you mean?”
Lily looked at the ceiling.
“The decorations.”
“The dress.”
“The chairs.”
She paused.
“It looked like everyone was celebrating something.”
Emily understood.
“Yes.”
Lily turned toward her.
“Were you supposed to be there?”
Emily was quiet.
“Yes.”
The answer carried years of sadness.
“I was supposed to be there with you.”
Lily reached for her hand.
“But you’re here now.”
Emily smiled through tears.
“Yes.”
“That’s what matters.”
Emily leaned down and kissed her forehead.
“You are so much stronger than you know.”
Lily closed her eyes.
For the first time in years, she fell asleep without wondering whether her mother would return.
Across town, Ryan sat alone in the empty ballroom.
The staff had already begun removing decorations.
The flowers that had filled the room were being carried away.
The tables that had held celebration now looked ordinary.
Ryan remained seated near the wedding area.
His jacket was still perfectly pressed.
His appearance was still the same.
But everything else had changed.
Vanessa had left without another word.
She had taken off her wedding dress before leaving and placed it carefully in the dressing room.
She did not want anything from that day.
Not the memories.
Not the promises.
Not the future she thought she was building.
Ryan picked up his phone.
There were dozens of missed calls and messages.
His family.
Friends.
People asking what happened.
He ignored all of them.
For the first time, he could not control the story.
He could not decide what people believed.
The truth was already spreading.
The next morning, Ryan arrived at the house hoping to speak with Lily.
But James was waiting outside.
“You should not be here.”
Ryan stopped.
“I need to talk to her.”
James looked at him.
“Why?”
Ryan struggled.
“Because she is my daughter.”
James nodded.
“Yes.”
The response surprised him.
“You still have a responsibility to her.”
Ryan looked down.
“But?”
“But responsibility is not just showing up when you want forgiveness.”
James’s voice remained calm.
“It is proving that you can be trusted.”
Ryan looked through the window and saw Lily sitting with Emily.
They were eating breakfast together.
Something simple.
Something normal.
Something he had taken away.
“I made a mistake.”
James shook his head slightly.
“You keep calling it that.”
Ryan looked at him.
“What should I call it?”
“A choice.”
The word stayed between them.
Ryan had no answer.
James continued.
“You chose to hide the truth.”
Ryan lowered his eyes.
“You chose what Lily was allowed to know.”
His voice became quieter.
“And now you have to accept that she may not forgive you quickly.”
Ryan looked toward the window again.
“I love her.”
James nodded.
“Then show her.”
Ryan stood there silently.
For once, nobody was telling him how powerful he was.
Nobody was protecting his reputation.
Nobody was making excuses for him.
He was just a father who had failed his child.
Inside the house, Lily noticed him standing outside.
Her expression changed immediately.
Emily saw it.
“You don’t have to talk to him.”
Lily looked toward the window.
After a long moment, she walked closer.
Emily followed but stayed behind her.
Lily opened the door slightly.
Ryan looked at her.
“Hi.”
The little girl did not answer.
“I wanted to say something.”
She waited.
“I know saying sorry does not fix everything.”
Lily looked down.
“No.”
Ryan nodded.
“You’re right.”
He took a breath.
“I hurt you.”
The honesty surprised her.
“I made you think your mommy forgot you.”
Lily’s eyes became wet.
“But she didn’t.”
Ryan shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at Emily.
“She didn’t.”
For the first time, he admitted the truth without trying to change it.
Lily stood there quietly.
She was still hurt.
She was still afraid.
But she was listening.
And sometimes healing began with simply being heard.
Lily looked at Ryan for a long time before finally speaking.
“I missed her every day.”
Ryan nodded slowly.
“I know.”
“No, you don’t.”
The words were not angry.
They were simply true.
Ryan looked down.
“You’re right.”
Lily held onto the doorframe.
“I thought she didn’t love me anymore.”
Ryan closed his eyes.
May you like
The pain in her voice was something he could not ignore.
“I should have never let you believe that.”
