Chương 1

""The first time Lily realized her mother might never come back was the moment she saw the empty chair beside the wedding table.

The luxury country club ballroom glittered with crystal lights, white flowers, and hundreds of small candles reflecting across polished floors.

Every detail of the wedding had been planned carefully, from the elegant decorations to the champagne glasses arranged perfectly on each reception table.

But to Lily, the only thing that mattered was the empty seat where her mother should have been sitting.

The seven-year-old girl stood quietly near the edge of the wedding area, holding the fabric of her light-colored dress with trembling fingers.

Her long brown hair fell over her shoulders as she looked around the crowded room with frightened red eyes.

Adults smiled at each other and whispered about the beautiful ceremony, but Lily felt like she was standing in a place where she did not belong.

She searched every face in the room, hoping to find the one person who always made her feel safe.

Her small voice finally broke through the noise around her.

“I want my mommy.”

A few guests nearby turned their heads, their expressions changing when they saw the sadness on the little girl's face.

Ryan noticed her from across the room and immediately walked toward her.

He wore a blue suit jacket over a white shirt, looking like a proud groom moments earlier, but his expression now carried frustration and tension.

He had spent the entire day trying to make everything appear perfect.

The wedding was supposed to be the beginning of his new life with Vanessa.

The guests were supposed to see a happy family forming.

But Lily’s sadness threatened the image he had carefully created.

“Lily,” Ryan said quietly as he approached her, forcing his voice to remain calm.

The little girl looked up at him with tears gathering in her eyes.

She did not move toward him.

She only looked past him toward the entrance, as if she was waiting for someone to walk through those doors.

Ryan noticed the direction of her gaze and his jaw tightened.

“She is not coming,” he said.

Lily shook her head slowly.

“She will come,” she whispered.

Ryan looked around at the guests watching them and lowered his voice.

“Today is different, Lily.”

The little girl held her arms close to herself.

“I don’t want her to be my new mommy.”

The words were soft, but they carried across the silence that had started forming around them.

Vanessa stood several steps behind Ryan in her elegant wedding dress.

Her smile disappeared as she watched the child reject the new family everyone expected her to accept.

The guests began exchanging uncomfortable looks.

Some looked at Lily with sympathy.

Others looked at Ryan, waiting to understand what was happening.

Ryan felt the attention of the entire room pressing against him.

His expression changed from embarrassment to anger.

“You need to stop doing this,” he said.

Lily looked confused.

“Doing what?”

“Making everything difficult.”

The little girl stepped backward.

Her eyes moved between Ryan and Vanessa.

“I just want my mommy.”

For a brief moment, Ryan looked like he wanted to say something else.

Something softer.

Something that might calm the situation.

But the pressure of the guests, the wedding, and his own frustration overcame him.

His face hardened.

“You need to accept that things have changed.”

Lily’s lips trembled.

“She wouldn’t leave me.”

The sentence struck something inside him.

His eyes narrowed.

“She is gone.”

Lily shook her head harder.

“No.”

Ryan’s breathing became heavier.

The ballroom grew quieter.

Even the music seemed distant.

Vanessa watched nervously from behind him, unsure whether to step forward or remain silent.

Lily looked smaller than ever as she stood alone in the middle of the decorated room.

She was not thinking about the wedding.

She was not thinking about the guests.

She was only thinking about her mother.

Ryan stepped closer.

His posture became more aggressive.

Several guests noticed the change in his behavior.

A few exchanged worried glances.

Lily looked up at him, unable to understand why the person who was supposed to protect her suddenly looked so angry.

Then everything changed in a single moment.

Ryan moved toward her with a sudden burst of anger.

The sound that followed shocked everyone in the ballroom.

Lily stumbled backward in disbelief.

Her hand immediately moved to her cheek.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The entire room froze.

The little girl’s eyes filled with tears as she looked at Ryan like she no longer recognized him.

The guests who had been smiling moments earlier now sat in complete silence.

A woman near the front covered her mouth in shock.

Someone quietly whispered that they needed to call for help.

Vanessa stood frozen, her face pale as she realized what everyone had witnessed.

Ryan’s anger disappeared almost instantly.

The reality of what he had done finally reached him.

His expression changed from frustration to fear.

“I…” he started.

But no words came out.

Lily did not answer.

She only stood there shaking.

Her small shoulders moved with quiet sobs as she looked around for someone who could save her.

Then the large ballroom doors opened.

The sound echoed through the room.

Everyone turned.

A man stood at the entrance wearing a black suit.

James.

His eyes immediately found Lily.

The moment he saw her crying, his expression changed.

He did not shout.

He did not rush blindly.

He simply looked at Ryan with controlled anger that was more frightening than yelling.

Several guests stepped aside as James walked forward.

Lily saw him and immediately moved toward him.

James reached her and pulled her close, protecting her with one arm around her shoulders.

“You’re okay,” he whispered.

Lily held onto him tightly.

James looked at Ryan.

The anger in his eyes was clear, but his voice remained controlled.

“What did you do?”

Ryan stepped back.

May you like

“You don’t understand.”

James looked down at Lily before looking back at him.
