Chương 8

Every decision.

Every relationship.

His entire life had been monitored.

"No."

Rachel looked at him.

"Your father was preparing you."

"For what?"

"For control."

Daniel stared at the screen.

A cold realization entered his mind.

His father had not abandoned him.

He had been shaping him.

Training him.

Waiting for him to become the next version of himself.

"I spent my entire life trying not to become him," Daniel whispered.

Rachel looked at him.

"And that is why Emily trusted you."

Ethan looked toward Daniel.

"She trusted you?"

Daniel nodded.

"She did."

"Then why did she leave?"

Daniel looked at the file again.

"Because she was trying to protect me too."

The archive lights suddenly shut off.

The servers stopped humming.

Everyone froze.

Claire immediately moved toward Ethan.

"What happened?"

Victor looked toward the entrance.

"They are cutting power."

Rachel's expression became serious.

"They know we are here."

A metallic sound echoed through the archive.

The main door began closing.

Daniel grabbed the edge before it sealed completely.

The force pushed against him.

Claire moved to help.

Victor joined them.

Together they held the door open.

Then a voice came through the speaker.

A voice Daniel recognized.

A voice that had haunted him for years.

"Daniel."

Everyone froze.

The voice was older.

But unmistakable.

Richard Mercer.

Daniel slowly looked toward the speaker.

His face lost all emotion.

"Father?"

The voice answered calmly.

"I knew you would eventually find the truth."

Ethan stared at Daniel.

"He is alive."

Daniel tightened his grip on the closing door.

The impossible truth was no longer hidden.

The man who had shaped his life.

The man who had destroyed Emily's.

The man who was supposed to be dead.

Was waiting for them on the other side.

Daniel's hands tightened around the steel door as the voice continued through the speaker.

"Open the door, son."

Nobody spoke.

The word son carried more weight than any threat could have.

Daniel had spent years believing Richard Mercer was gone.

Now the man who had shaped his childhood was speaking to him from beneath the building he had secretly controlled.

Ethan looked at Daniel.

"Is that really him?"

Daniel did not take his eyes from the speaker.

"Yes."

Rachel stepped closer.

"We cannot let him control this moment."

Richard's voice returned.

"You always were impatient, Rachel."

Her expression changed.

She had heard that voice before.

"You know what you did."

Richard gave a quiet laugh.

"I know what I built."

Daniel pushed harder against the door.

"You kept Emily hidden."

A pause followed.

Then Richard answered.

"Emily made choices."

Daniel's face hardened.

"No."

His voice became colder.

"You made them for her."

The archive lights flickered back on.

The steel door slowly opened.

Daniel stepped forward first.

Claire immediately followed.

Ethan stayed between them.

The room beyond the archive was a large control center filled with screens.

On every screen were images of people.

Executives.

Politicians.

Families.

Every person Richard Mercer had watched.

And at the center of the room stood an older man in a dark suit.

His hair was gray.

His posture was straight.

His face showed no fear.

Richard Mercer looked exactly like the photographs.

Only older.

Only more dangerous.

Daniel stopped.

For several seconds, neither man spoke.

Then Richard smiled faintly.

"You look exactly like your mother."

Daniel felt anger rise.

"Do not mention her."

Richard looked at Ethan.

"And that must be Emily's son."

Ethan stepped closer to Daniel.

Richard studied him carefully.

"I never expected him to survive."

The sentence made Daniel's expression change.

Claire noticed immediately.

"You planned for him to die."

Richard looked at her.

"No."

He looked back at Ethan.

"I planned for him to disappear."

Daniel moved forward.

"Why?"

Richard's answer was calm.

"Because he was the one thing I could not control."

Ethan looked confused.

"I don't understand."

Richard looked at Daniel.

"Your father was supposed to become my greatest achievement."

Daniel stared at him.

"I was your son."

Richard's expression remained unchanged.

"Exactly."

The word sounded almost mechanical.

"You had everything required to inherit my work."

Daniel shook his head.

"I wanted nothing to do with your work."

Richard smiled.

"That was your greatest weakness."

"No."

Daniel stepped closer.

"That was my greatest choice."

For the first time, something changed in Richard's eyes.

A small crack in his confidence.

"You think you are different from me."

Daniel looked around the archive.

"Because I am."

Richard walked slowly toward one of the screens.

"Look around you."

He pointed at the files.

"Every powerful person in this city has secrets."

Daniel said nothing.

"Every leader has weaknesses."

Richard continued.

"Every family has something they would protect at any cost."

Claire's expression turned cold.

"So you destroyed them."

"I controlled them."

"You ruined lives."

"I prevented chaos."

Daniel looked at him.

"You convinced yourself you were saving the world."

Richard turned.

"Someone had to."

The silence between them was heavy.

Ethan looked at the screens.

"Where is my mother?"

Richard looked at him.

The question seemed to surprise him.

"Emily always cared about others before herself."

Ethan's voice became stronger.

"Where is she?"

Richard stared at him.

Then he looked at Daniel.

"She is why you are here."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Answer him."

Richard sighed.

"She was transferred."

"Where?"

Richard did not answer.

Daniel's patience disappeared.

"Where is Emily Carter?"

Richard looked toward the far wall.

A single screen turned on.

A camera feed appeared.

A woman sat in a small room.

Her hair was longer.

Her face was older.

But Daniel recognized her instantly.

The world seemed to stop.

Emily.

Alive.

Daniel could not breathe.

Ethan covered his mouth.

"Mom."

The sound was barely a whisper.

Emily looked toward the camera.

As if she could somehow hear him.

Her eyes widened.

Then tears appeared.

Daniel moved toward the screen.

"Emily."

Richard watched them.

"Now you understand."

Daniel turned sharply.

"You kept her alive to use her."

Richard looked away.

"I kept her alive because she knew the truth."

"She knew about you."

"She knew everything."

Claire looked at the screen.

"Can you bring her here?"

Richard smiled slightly.

"You are assuming I want to stop you."

Daniel froze.

"What?"

Richard walked toward a control panel.

"I wanted you to find this place."

Everyone became alert.

"Why?"

Richard looked at Daniel.

"Because I needed to know if you were finally ready."

Daniel stared at him.

"Ready for what?"

Richard pressed a button.

The archive doors locked again.

"I needed to know whether you would choose power or family."

The room became silent.

Daniel looked at Ethan.

Then at Emily on the screen.

Then back at his father.

"You are still testing me."

Richard nodded.

"Yes."

Daniel walked toward the control panel.

"You never changed."

"No."

Richard looked almost proud.

"I never needed to."

Daniel stopped.

"That is where you are wrong."

He looked around the room.

At the stolen secrets.

At the destroyed lives.

At everything Richard had built.

"You spent your entire life collecting information because you were afraid."

Richard's expression hardened.

"Careful."

"You were afraid people would see who you really were."

Daniel stepped closer.

"So you made everyone else powerless."

For the first time, Richard looked angry.

"You know nothing about survival."

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

His voice became quiet.

"I know everything about it."

Ethan watched him.

Daniel continued.

"I spent my entire life trying to escape becoming you."

Richard stared.

"And now?"

Daniel looked at Emily's image.

"Now I know I already won."

Richard frowned.

"Won?"

Daniel nodded.

"Because she trusted me."

He looked at Ethan.

"Because he trusts me."

Then he looked back.

"And because I would rather lose everything than become you."

The words affected Richard more than anger could have.

A sound came from the control panel.

The archive system began shutting down.

Claire looked at the screens.

"What is happening?"

Daniel looked at Richard.

"You gave me access."

Richard's expression changed.

"What did you do?"

Daniel held up the badge holder.

"I stopped trying to beat you."

He placed it against the control scanner.

"I started exposing you."

Every screen changed.

Files began transferring.

Names.

Records.

Evidence.

Everything Richard had hidden for decades.

Richard stepped forward.

"No."

Daniel looked at him.

"This ends now."

Security alarms began throughout the underground facility.

But this time, they were not protecting Richard.

They were announcing his downfall.

Hours later, the first sunlight entered the city.

The truth spread faster than anyone could stop it.

The files exposed years of manipulation.

Investigations began.

People who had lived in fear finally spoke.

And beneath the building, Emily Carter walked out beside Daniel and Ethan.

She looked weaker than before.

But she was free.

Ethan held her hand tightly.

Daniel walked beside them.

For a long moment, nobody said anything.

Then Emily looked at him.

"I knew you would find us."

Daniel smiled sadly.

"I should have found you sooner."

Emily shook her head.

"You found us when we needed you."

Ethan looked between them.

"Are we going to be okay?"

Daniel looked at Emily.

Then at the boy who had brought the truth back into his life.

"Yes."

He answered with certainty.

"Because we are not hiding anymore."

Emily smiled.

And for the first time in ten years, the three of them stood together without secrets between them.

The badge that had exposed everything was no longer a symbol of betrayal.

May you like

It became proof that the truth could survive.

No matter how deeply someone tried to bury it.
