Chương 2

"I was told your mother was gone," Daniel finally said.
The boy lowered his eyes.
"Everyone says that."
Claire stepped forward.
"Because someone wanted everyone to believe it."
Daniel looked sharply at her.
"What are you saying?"
Claire held his gaze.
"I'm saying Emily Carter did not disappear by accident."
The boy looked between them.
His voice became quieter.
"Then what happened to her?"
Daniel had no answer.
Not yet.
But the fear in Claire's expression told him she already knew.
The badge holder remained on the desk between them.
A small black object surrounded by years of lies.
And for the first time in a decade, Daniel felt the past reaching back for him.
Daniel did not move for several seconds.
The city lights behind him reflected across the glass walls, but he barely noticed them anymore.
His attention remained fixed on the boy standing beside Claire.
The same boy who was now looking at him with a mixture of fear and hope.
The same boy who carried a piece of a past Daniel thought had disappeared forever.
"How old are you?" Daniel asked quietly.
The boy looked confused by the question.
"Ten."
Daniel closed his eyes briefly.
Ten years.
A decade since the night everything changed.
A decade since Emily Carter vanished from his life without an explanation.
Claire watched the emotions crossing his face.
She knew Daniel was trying to organize memories that no longer fit together.
"His name is Ethan," Claire said.
Daniel opened his eyes.
"Ethan."
The boy nodded.
"Yes."
Daniel repeated the name silently, as if testing whether it belonged in his world.
"Why did you bring him here?"
Claire walked closer to the desk.
"Because I found out the truth."
Daniel looked at the badge holder.
"And you think that proves everything?"
"No," Claire replied.
"It proves enough to start looking."
The boy looked between them.
"What are you both talking about?"
Daniel noticed the confusion in Ethan's expression.
For the first time, he saw beyond the mystery.
He saw a child who had spent years being told incomplete stories.
A child who had probably learned not to ask too many questions because every answer led to another painful silence.
Daniel softened his voice.
"Ethan, what did your mother tell you about me?"
The boy looked down at the floor.
"She never talked about you."
The answer surprised Daniel more than any accusation could have.
"Never?"
Ethan shook his head.
"She only said that some people leave because they are afraid."
Daniel felt those words like a direct hit.
Claire noticed the change in him.
"She was protecting him."
Daniel looked at Claire.
"From what?"
"From the people who wanted this secret to stay buried."
The room became tense again.
Daniel walked back toward the desk and picked up the badge holder.
The material felt cold against his fingers.
He turned it over slowly.
The emblem on the front belonged to an organization he had once trusted completely.
An organization that had later betrayed him.
"Where did Emily get this?"
Ethan answered quietly.
"She said it belonged to someone who promised to come back."
Daniel looked at him.
"Who?"
Ethan hesitated.
Then he reached into his jacket pocket.
He pulled out a small folded piece of paper.
Claire immediately noticed it.
"What is that?"
Ethan held it carefully.
"My mom left it for me."
Daniel did not take it immediately.
Something about the way Ethan held the paper made him understand it was more than a simple note.
It was something precious.
"Can I see it?"
Ethan stepped forward and handed it over.
Daniel unfolded the paper slowly.
The handwriting was familiar.
Too familiar.
His breathing changed when he saw the first line.
Daniel.
His fingers tightened around the page.
Emily had written his name.
Not a memory of his name.
Not a report.
His name.
He read silently.
If you are reading this, it means Ethan finally found the truth.
Daniel stopped.
Claire looked at his face.
Daniel continued.
I never wanted him to grow up without knowing who you were.
I never wanted you to believe I abandoned you.
But I learned that the people around us were willing to destroy anyone who exposed what they did.
Daniel lowered the paper slightly.
The words blurred for a moment.
Ethan watched him carefully.
"Is she alive?"
The question was simple.
But it carried years of pain.
Daniel looked at Claire.
Claire did not answer.
That silence was enough.
Ethan's expression changed.
"No."
Daniel immediately looked back at him.
"Do not assume the worst."
"But you don't know."
Daniel walked closer.
"No, I don't."
Ethan looked away.
"Everyone always says that."
The sadness in his voice was harder for Daniel to handle than anger.
Because anger could be fought.
Sadness meant someone had already accepted losing.
Daniel folded the note carefully.
"Your mother was one of the strongest people I ever knew."
Ethan looked up.
"Then why didn't she come back?"
Daniel had no easy answer.
The truth was complicated.
The truth involved people with power.
People who could erase records, change stories, and make innocent people disappear.
Before Daniel could respond, Claire's phone vibrated.
She looked at the screen.
Her expression changed immediately.
Daniel noticed.
"What happened?"
Claire turned the phone toward him.
A message appeared.
Someone accessed the old Carter investigation file.
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"Who?"
Claire shook her head.
"Unknown."
The office suddenly felt exposed.
Daniel looked toward the glass walls.
For years he had believed his enemies were outside.
Now he wondered if they had always been closer.
"We need to leave," Claire said.
Ethan looked frightened.
"Why?"
Daniel looked at him.
"Because someone knows you have this."
He held up the badge holder.
The boy stared at it.
"Who would care about a badge?"
Daniel looked at the emblem.
"Someone who knows what it reveals."
The lights from the city continued moving below them.
May you like
But inside the office, everything had changed.
The calm business meeting they expected had become something else entirely.
