Chương 7

"I was a child."

Her mother closed her eyes.

"I know."

"No, you don't."

Clara stepped forward.

"You don't know what it was like."

"You don't know what it felt like when other children talked about their families and I had to pretend mine was normal."

"You don't know what it felt like when I stopped asking where you were because I realized nobody would tell me the truth."

Every word carried years of pain.

Her mother accepted every one without defending herself.

"I know I hurt you."

"I know I missed birthdays."

"I know I missed every moment when you needed me."

"But I never stopped loving you."

Clara looked away.

Love was the one thing she wanted to believe.

And the one thing she was afraid to trust.

Daniel stood nearby, silent.

For the first time that night, he understood that some wounds were too deep for anyone else to heal.

Evelyn looked at Clara's mother.

"You came back."

The older woman nodded.

"I had to."

"You knew Victor would come."

"Yes."

"And you knew the truth would finally come out."

"Yes."

Evelyn looked exhausted.

"Why now?"

Clara's mother looked at the family portrait wall.

"Because the person who started this is gone."

"But the person who continued it is still alive."

Everyone became still.

Daniel looked toward Victor.

Victor did not react.

That worried him more than anger would have.

"Who continued it?" Daniel asked.

Clara's mother looked at him.

"Your uncle."

Daniel frowned.

"My uncle?"

"My father only had one brother," he said quietly.

"He died years ago."

Clara's mother shook her head.

"No."

"He disappeared."

Daniel felt a chill.

"Everyone said he died."

"That was the story your father created."

Evelyn looked horrified.

"I thought..."

"You thought many things," Clara's mother said gently.

"That was your husband's greatest talent."

"He made people believe what he wanted them to believe."

Victor looked down.

"He was always better at hiding than I was."

Daniel turned toward him.

"You knew?"

Victor nodded.

"I knew your uncle was alive."

"Why didn't you tell anyone?"

Victor looked ashamed.

"Because I was afraid."

Clara almost laughed, but there was no humor in it.

"Everyone was afraid."

"My whole life was destroyed because everyone was afraid."

The room went quiet.

Her mother walked closer.

"I know an apology cannot give you back those years."

"No apology can fix what happened."

"But I need you to know one thing."

Clara looked at her.

"I left because staying would have put you in danger."

Clara's eyes filled with tears.

"You could have taken me with you."

Her mother looked devastated.

"I tried."

The answer surprised her.

"I tried to take you."

"What happened?"

"Your father found out."

"He threatened to use the courts."

"He threatened to make sure I would never see you again."

Clara's breathing became unsteady.

"Then why did he let me stay with you?"

Her mother looked at Evelyn.

"Because Evelyn helped me."

Clara turned.

Evelyn lowered her eyes.

"I arranged for you to stay with your mother during those years."

"Your father did not know everything."

"I thought I could protect both of you."

Clara stared at the woman who had hidden the truth.

"You helped her?"

"Yes."

"Then why did you let me believe she abandoned me?"

Evelyn's eyes filled with regret.

"Because your father made me choose."

"And I chose the option that kept you alive."

Clara looked at everyone around her.

The lies were beginning to reveal themselves.

But every truth still carried another wound.

Daniel stepped closer.

"Clara."

She looked at him.

"I know you cannot trust me right now."

"I know I failed you."

"But I want to help you finish this."

Her expression softened slightly.

"You should have told me."

"I know."

"Before I fell in love with you."

"I know."

Daniel swallowed.

"I am sorry."

The apology was simple.

It did not erase anything.

But for the first time that night, it sounded honest.

Victor suddenly moved toward the table.

Everyone noticed.

"Where are you going?"

Daniel asked.

Victor stopped.

"To end this."

He placed the necklace on the table.

"The evidence is inside."

Clara looked at it.

Her mother's eyes widened.

"You found it."

Victor nodded.

"But I never opened it."

"Why?"

"Because your mother trusted me with it."

"And despite everything I did, I could not betray that trust again."

Clara slowly picked up the necklace.

Her fingers trembled.

A small hidden compartment was built into the silver pendant.

Inside was a tiny memory card.

Daniel stared.

"All of this was inside?"

Her mother nodded.

"Everything your father tried to destroy."

Before anyone could say another word, the lights suddenly went out.

The mansion fell into darkness.

A second later, a sound came from the hallway.

A door opening.

Everyone turned.

Someone else was inside.

Clara's mother immediately grabbed Clara's hand.

"Stay behind me."

Daniel moved forward.

"No."

He stepped beside them.

"Not this time."

A figure appeared in the darkness.

Older.

Calm.

Familiar.

Evelyn whispered the name she never thought she would say again.

"Richard."

The man stepped into the faint emergency lighting.

Daniel stared in disbelief.

His uncle.

The man who was supposed to be dead.

The man who had been hiding for decades.

Richard Whitmore smiled.

"Family reunions are always emotional."

Clara held the necklace tightly.

Richard looked directly at her.

"So this is the daughter everyone tried so hard to protect."

Daniel moved between them.

"You should be dead."

Richard smiled.

"That was the point."

Which continuation should follow: Richard’s confession or Clara exposing the evidence?

Richard Whitmore smiled.

"The dead are often more useful than the living."

Daniel stared at him with disbelief and anger.

"Why did you do this?"

Richard looked around the mansion.

"Because this family was built on a lie."

"No," Evelyn said quietly.

"You destroyed this family because you wanted what was never yours."

Richard's expression hardened.

"I wanted what your husband stole from me."

May you like

Victor stepped forward.

"Do not pretend this was about justice."
