Chương 3

"There is more."

Clara immediately shook her head.

"No."

Her voice trembled.

"I don't know if I can hear more."

Daniel reached for her hand.

"You don't have to do this alone."

She looked at him.

A small part of her still wanted to believe him.

But another part was terrified that every person she loved had been hiding something.

Evelyn carefully placed the photo frame on the table.

"There is one reason I asked you to come here tonight."

Daniel looked at her.

"You invited her?"

Evelyn nodded.

"I needed her to see this house before it was too late."

"What does that mean?"

Evelyn walked slowly toward an old wooden cabinet near the portrait wall.

She opened a hidden compartment behind one of the shelves.

Inside was a small envelope covered with years of dust.

Clara stared at it.

"My mother's?"

Evelyn nodded.

"I kept it because I was afraid."

Daniel moved closer.

"Afraid of what?"

"Afraid that if the truth came out, it would destroy everything."

Clara reached toward the envelope but stopped.

Her hand shook.

"Why didn't you give this to me before?"

Evelyn looked directly into her eyes.

"Because I made a promise to your mother."

"What promise?"

"That I would protect you until the day you were old enough to understand."

Clara's expression changed.

"She knew you?"

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"Your mother and I were not enemies."

"We were both victims of the same man."

The words stunned Daniel.

His entire understanding of his family shifted in seconds.

"My mother knew her?"

"Yes."

"Then why did you pretend they never met?"

Evelyn looked at him.

"Because your father demanded it."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"Even after he died, you continued hiding it."

"I was afraid."

"Of what?"

Evelyn looked at Clara.

"Of what would happen if the wrong people learned she was alive."

The room became silent again.

Clara stared at her.

"Alive?"

The single word changed everything.

Daniel looked at his mother in disbelief.

"Wait."

"What did you just say?"

Evelyn realized too late what she had revealed.

Her expression changed.

Clara stepped closer despite her weakness.

"My mother."

"Where is she?"

Evelyn did not answer.

The fear in her face was enough.

Daniel's voice became urgent.

"Mother."

"Where is Clara's mother?"

Evelyn looked toward the dark windows as thunder shook the mansion.

Then she whispered the truth she had hidden for decades.

"She has been watching this family from a distance all these years."

Clara felt her heart stop.

"Why?"

Evelyn looked back at her.

"Because she knows someone in this family is still trying to finish what your father started."

Clara felt the room closing around her.

Every answer she had ever trusted was being replaced by another mystery.

Her mother had not disappeared.

Her childhood had not happened by accident.

And the family she had spent years believing was distant had been connected to her life all along.

Daniel looked at Evelyn with a mixture of anger and fear.

"Someone is still trying to finish what my father started?"

Evelyn nodded slowly.

"That is why I stayed silent."

"You thought silence would protect us?"

Daniel's voice broke.

"It nearly destroyed her."

His eyes moved toward Clara.

The woman he loved was standing in the center of a storm created before she was even born.

Evelyn lowered her gaze.

"I know."

For the first time, she sounded less like the powerful woman who controlled the Whitmore empire and more like someone carrying the weight of a lifetime of regret.

"I have lived with that mistake every day."

Clara stared at the envelope on the table.

The old paper seemed to contain the missing pieces of her entire existence.

"Who is trying to hurt my mother?"

Evelyn hesitated.

That hesitation terrified Clara more than any answer could have.

"Tell me."

Evelyn took a slow breath.

"Your father's closest business partner."

Daniel frowned.

"Victor Hale?"

Evelyn looked at him.

"You know the name."

"Everyone knows the name," Daniel said quietly.

"He built half the companies in this city with my father."

"He was considered family."

Evelyn's expression hardened.

"He was never family."

The room fell silent.

Daniel looked toward the staircase, remembering every dinner, every business event, every photograph where Victor Hale stood beside his father like a loyal friend.

"Why would he still care after all these years?"

"Because your mother kept something from him."

"What?"

Evelyn looked at Clara.

"A piece of evidence."

Clara's heart raced.

"My mother had proof?"

"Yes."

"Proof of what?"

Evelyn walked back toward the envelope.

"Proof that your father and Victor were responsible for something much bigger than financial crimes."

Daniel's face tightened.

"What are you saying?"

Evelyn opened the envelope carefully.

Inside was a handwritten letter and several old documents.

"The Whitmore fortune was built on a secret agreement."

Daniel stepped closer.

"Between my father and Victor?"

Evelyn nodded.

"They destroyed businesses."

"They ruined families."

"They made people disappear when they became a threat."

Clara covered her mouth.

"My mother found out."

"Yes."

"And she ran."

"Yes."

"But she never stopped fighting."

Evelyn handed the letter to Clara.

"She wanted you to have this when you were ready."

Clara stared at the handwriting.

She recognized it instantly.

It was her mother's.

Her fingers trembled as she touched the page.

For years, she had dreamed of hearing her mother's voice again.

Now it was waiting for her in ink.

Daniel stood beside her but did not interrupt.

He knew this moment belonged only to Clara.

She unfolded the letter.

"My precious Clara," she whispered as she read the first words.

Her voice shook.

"That is how she started every letter she wrote me."

Evelyn looked surprised.

"She wrote you letters?"

Clara nodded slowly.

"After she disappeared, I found some hidden in my old room."

"I thought they were just memories."

Her eyes moved across the page.

Then her expression changed.

"What is it?"

Daniel asked.

Clara looked up.

"She knew."

May you like

Evelyn stepped forward.

"She knew what?"
