Chương 5

“It is real.”
Daniel looked up sharply.
“Why is my father’s attorney listed in this investigation?”
The question hung in the room.
Evelyn’s face lost the remaining color it had.
She looked toward Marcus with a mixture of fear and disappointment.
“You promised me he would never have to see this.”
Marcus sighed.
“I promised Thomas I would protect Daniel.”
“And sometimes protection means letting someone finally understand the truth.”
Daniel placed the report on the table.
His hands were shaking.
“Someone explain.”
Nobody spoke.
Daniel’s voice became louder.
“Explain why my father was investigating people close to us.”
Marcus looked at him.
“Because Thomas believed someone inside the family was helping hide the truth.”
Daniel looked between them.
“Who?”
Marcus remained silent.
Daniel’s eyes moved to Evelyn.
The answer appeared before anyone said it.
“No.”
Evelyn immediately shook her head.
“Daniel.”
“No.”
He stepped backward.
“You cannot do this.”
“I spent my entire life thinking my father was the person keeping secrets.”
His voice trembled.
“And now you are telling me the people closest to him were the ones he was afraid of?”
Evelyn walked toward him.
“Your father was afraid of losing you.”
Daniel looked away.
“That does not answer my question.”
Marcus opened the report again.
“The person Thomas was investigating was not your mother.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Then who?”
Marcus pointed to the document.
“The person who managed the family accounts for years.”
Daniel frowned.
“That was Robert Keller.”
Marcus nodded.
Daniel remembered the name.
Robert had been his father’s closest financial advisor.
He had attended family dinners.
He had been present at important moments.
He had been someone everyone trusted.
“What did he do?”
Marcus looked at the papers.
“He helped hide financial transfers.”
Daniel stared.
“From my father?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Marcus took a breath.
“Because Robert knew about Richard.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“He knew Richard was my biological father?”
“Yes.”
“And he used that information?”
Marcus nodded.
“He believed the secret gave him power.”
The room felt colder.
Daniel walked slowly around the table.
Every piece of his life seemed to be rearranging itself.
The people he trusted.
The memories he cherished.
The moments he misunderstood.
Everything had another meaning now.
“My father knew?”
Marcus nodded.
“Thomas discovered the financial records shortly before his death.”
Daniel looked at the letter again.
“He wrote this because he knew.”
“Yes.”
“He knew everything.”
“Yes.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
The pain was overwhelming.
He had spent years blaming a dead man who had never been able to defend himself.
“I hated him,” Daniel whispered.
Evelyn’s expression broke.
“I know.”
“I hated him because I thought he was ashamed of me.”
His voice became smaller.
“But he was trying to protect me.”
Marcus nodded.
“He was trying to protect you from people who would use the truth against you.”
Daniel looked at the report.
“Did Robert know about me?”
“Yes.”
“Did he know Richard was my father?”
“Yes.”
Daniel clenched his jaw.
“Then why did he never tell me?”
Marcus answered quietly.
“Because he wanted control of the company.”
The explanation felt familiar.
Another person had treated Daniel’s life as a tool.
Another person had decided he did not deserve the truth.
Daniel turned toward Evelyn.
“How many people knew?”
She looked down.
“More than I wanted.”
“Who?”
Evelyn hesitated.
“Your father.”
“Me.”
“Marcus.”
“Robert.”
She paused.
“And one more person.”
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“Who?”
Evelyn looked toward the staircase.
The empty space above them felt like it was holding memories from another lifetime.
“Your sister.”
Daniel froze.
“My sister?”
Marcus looked surprised.
“You never told him?”
Evelyn shook her head.
“I tried to protect both of them.”
Daniel’s confusion grew.
“What sister?”
Evelyn sat down slowly.
Her voice became quiet.
“Before you were born, Richard had a daughter.”
Daniel stared.
“A daughter?”
“Yes.”
“Where is she?”
Evelyn looked at Marcus.
Marcus understood immediately.
“She is alive.”
Daniel felt the room spin.
Another person.
Another secret.
Another missing piece of his identity.
“Where?”
Marcus looked at the documents.
“She has been closer than you think.”
Daniel stared.
“What does that mean?”
Before Marcus could answer, a sudden sound came from the hallway.
Everyone turned.
The large glass doorway remained closed.
The snow outside continued falling.
Then they heard footsteps.
Slow.
Careful.
Someone was inside the house.
Evelyn stood immediately.
Her expression changed.
She knew who it was.
Daniel noticed.
“Mom?”
The footsteps moved closer.
A figure appeared near the entrance of the living room.
A woman stood there, around Daniel’s age, holding a small envelope in her hand.
Her face carried the same intensity Daniel had seen in his own reflection for years.
Evelyn looked at her with shock.
“You came.”
The woman looked toward Daniel.
“Yes.”
Daniel stared at her.
He did not know her.
But something about her felt strangely familiar.
The woman looked at Marcus.
“Did you finally tell him?”
Marcus nodded.
Daniel looked between them.
“Who are you?”
The woman took a slow breath.
“My name is Claire Vale.”
Daniel waited.
“I am Richard Vale’s daughter.”
The words landed like another earthquake.
Claire stepped closer.
“And I am your sister.”
Daniel could not speak.
The anger.
The confusion.
The exhaustion.
Everything mixed together until he felt numb.
Evelyn watched him carefully.
“Daniel.”
He looked at her.
“How long?”
Her eyes filled with regret.
“How long did you know about her?”
Evelyn looked down.
“Since before you were born.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
The truth kept arriving in waves.
Each one destroying the version of his life he had spent years believing.
Claire held out the envelope.
“Your father left this for me.”
Daniel looked at it.
“Thomas?”
She nodded.
“He knew we would eventually meet.”
Daniel did not take it.
“Why now?”
Claire looked at him.
“Because he believed you deserved the whole truth.”
Marcus stepped forward.
“The letter explains everything.”
Daniel looked at the envelope.
Then at Claire.
May you like
Then at his mother.
For the first time that night, he realized the truth was not just about betrayal.
