Chương 4

The strength she had shown earlier was disappearing.

The truth was finally forcing her to stop pretending she had everything under control.

“Your father and Richard built the company together,” Marcus continued.

“They started with nothing.”

“They worked through impossible years.”

“They trusted each other more than anyone else.”

Daniel listened carefully.

“Then what changed?”

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

“Love changed everything.”

Daniel followed his gaze.

He felt his chest tighten.

“My mother?”

Marcus nodded.

“Your father believed Evelyn chose him.”

“He believed they were building a life together.”

“But Richard and Evelyn had a history before that.”

Daniel looked at his mother.

She did not deny it.

That hurt more than if she had argued.

“I was young,” Evelyn whispered.

“I thought I understood love.”

Daniel looked away.

“Everyone keeps saying they made mistakes.”

His voice became sharper.

“But I am the one who lived with the consequences.”

Evelyn lowered her head.

“You are right.”

The admission surprised him.

She had spent the entire night fighting to control the situation.

Now she simply accepted his anger.

“I was afraid of losing everything,” she continued.

“I was afraid of losing your father, losing my home, losing you.”

Daniel looked at her.

“So you chose a lie.”

“Yes.”

The honesty made the room feel heavier.

“Yes, I chose a lie.”

Daniel turned toward Marcus.

“And my father?”

Marcus took a long breath.

“Your father found out about Richard and Evelyn after you were born.”

Daniel’s eyes widened.

“After?”

“Yes.”

Marcus looked down.

“That was when everything changed.”

Daniel slowly approached the table.

“What did he do?”

Marcus hesitated.

“He stayed.”

The answer confused Daniel.

“He stayed?”

Marcus nodded.

“He could have left.”

“He could have destroyed everyone.”

“But he chose to raise you.”

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

A tear finally moved down her cheek.

“Your father loved you,” she whispered.

Daniel shook his head.

“Then why did he look at me like he was disappointed every day?”

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Because that was the question she had always feared.

Marcus answered quietly.

“Because he saw the person he loved and the person who hurt him in the same face.”

Daniel looked down.

The answer was cruel.

But somehow, it made sense.

Marcus continued.

“He hated what happened.”

“But he never hated you.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Memories returned.

His father teaching him how to drive.

His father standing outside his school after everyone else had left.

His father silently fixing things around the house without asking for thanks.

Moments Daniel had dismissed because they did not come with words.

“I thought he never wanted me,” Daniel whispered.

Evelyn stood slowly.

“He wanted you more than anything.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Then why did nobody tell me?”

“Because we thought we could control the damage.”

She looked at the documents.

“We were wrong.”

The fireplace continued burning softly.

The contrast between the peaceful room and the painful truth felt almost unbearable.

Daniel picked up another page.

His eyes moved across the writing.

“My son, if you ever discover this, I need you to know one thing.”

Daniel stopped.

His hands tightened.

He continued reading.

“You were never my mistake.”

A tear escaped before he could stop it.

The sentence broke through years of anger he had carried.

“You were the only part of my life that I never regretted.”

Daniel lowered the paper.

For a moment, he was no longer a grown man standing in a family war.

He was a child searching for proof that he had been loved.

Evelyn watched him quietly.

“I should have told you.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Yes.”

The answer was simple.

Painful.

Necessary.

“I should have told you everything.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

Marcus stepped closer.

“There is more.”

Daniel looked at him.

“What more could there possibly be?”

Marcus hesitated.

The hesitation immediately changed the atmosphere.

Daniel noticed.

“What?”

Marcus looked toward the window.

The snow outside had become heavier.

“There is another reason your father kept investigating Richard.”

Daniel frowned.

“I thought you said it was because of the company.”

“That was only part of it.”

Marcus returned his attention to Daniel.

“Your father believed Richard was hiding something else.”

Daniel felt a chill.

“What?”

Marcus opened the final folder.

Inside was a report from a private investigator.

The date was from several years before Thomas Hart died.

Daniel stared at the page.

There was one sentence highlighted in the middle.

“Richard Vale was not the only person involved.”

Daniel looked up.

“What does that mean?”

Evelyn suddenly stood.

“Marcus.”

Her voice was filled with fear.

Marcus looked at her.

“He deserves to know.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“Not like this.”

Daniel looked between them.

“What are you both hiding now?”

Nobody answered.

That silence returned.

The same silence that had followed him his entire life.

Daniel grabbed the folder.

“No.”

His voice became firm.

“No more secrets.”

He opened the report.

The first page contained names.

Dates.

Connections.

Then he saw one name that made his entire body freeze.

A name he recognized.

A name that should not have been there.

His breathing stopped.

“What is this?”

Evelyn stepped closer.

Daniel looked at her with terror in his eyes.

“Why is his name here?”

Marcus moved toward him.

“Daniel.”

“No.”

Daniel held up the paper.

“Tell me why my father was investigating my own family.”

The room fell silent.

The Christmas lights continued glowing behind them.

The snow continued falling outside.

And inside the mansion, the final hidden truth was waiting to be revealed.

When ready, continue with the next story segment to uncover the remaining secret and complete the full arc.

Daniel stared at the name printed on the report.

For several seconds, he could not move.

The letters on the page seemed impossible, like a mistake created by someone who wanted to hurt him.

But the longer he looked, the more certain he became that he was not imagining it.

“This cannot be real,” Daniel whispered.

Marcus watched his reaction carefully.
