Chương 5

Not the answer she wanted.

"That is what you do," she said.

"What?"

"You turn people into problems to solve."

Adrian looked at her.

"And you turn yourself into someone who doesn't need anyone."

The words surprised both of them.

For a moment, neither moved.

Because there was truth on both sides.

Elena looked down.

"Maybe."

The admission was softer than he expected.

Adrian sat on the edge of the desk.

"I don't want to lose you."

She looked at him.

The honesty almost made it worse.

"Then stop acting like losing me is the price of finding the truth."

Before he could answer, Elena's phone vibrated.

She checked the screen.

Her face changed.

Not fear.

Concern.

"My mother's doctor."

Adrian stood immediately.

"Is she okay?"

Elena answered the call.

"Hello?"

She listened.

Her expression became distant.

"Yes, she's here."

A pause.

"Tonight?"

Another pause.

"I understand."

She ended the call.

"What happened?"

Elena put the phone away.

"The doctor wants to see her tomorrow morning."

"Why?"

"He said there are some records he wants to review with her."

Adrian watched her carefully.

"Did he say it was urgent?"

She hesitated.

"Yes."

The room became quiet again.

Too many things were happening at once.

Too many questions were appearing before they had answers.

Adrian walked toward her.

Elena almost refused.

He could see it.

Then she looked tired.

Not emotionally tired.

Physically.

The kind of tired that came from carrying too much for too long.

"Okay," she said.

It was not forgiveness.

It was not reconciliation.

It was simply an agreement to survive the next hour together.

They left the study without touching.

The ballroom was nearly empty now.

Staff members collected glasses from tables.

The musicians packed their equipment.

The broken cake was gone.

Only a faint stain remained on the marble.

Elena noticed it.

Someone had cleaned everything except the one mark that would probably disappear by morning.

She wondered how many things in life were like that.

How many people believed damage was gone because they could no longer see it.

Outside, the night air was colder than she expected.

Adrian opened the passenger door for her.

A year ago, she would have smiled.

Tonight, she simply thanked him.

The drive to her apartment was quiet.

Not peaceful.

Quiet.

There was a difference.

Adrian kept both hands on the steering wheel.

He usually filled silence with plans.

Solutions.

Numbers.

Tonight he had none.

Elena looked out the window at passing buildings.

"I should have asked you earlier."

Adrian glanced at her.

"Asked me what?"

"About your family."

"My family is complicated."

"So is mine."

He looked back at the road.

"I didn't want my father's reputation to become part of us."

Elena gave a small, tired laugh.

"You mean you didn't want me to know how much damage came with your name."

He didn't respond.

Because it was true.

"My father was not an easy person," Adrian said.

"Was he cruel?"

The question took him longer to answer.

"Sometimes."

Elena looked at him.

"Sometimes?"

Adrian tightened his grip on the wheel.

"He believed kindness was something people used against you."

"Did he believe that about everyone?"

"Mostly."

"And did he believe it about himself?"

Adrian looked at her.

For a moment, he was not a businessman.

Not an owner.

Not the man everyone watched.

He was just a son.

"Yes."

The answer stayed between them.

When they reached Elena's apartment building, neither moved immediately.

The building was old compared to Adrian's mansion.

The hallway lights were slightly yellow.

The parking lot had a broken security camera above the entrance.

Elena had always loved this place.

Not because it was impressive.

Because it was hers.

She shook her head.

"I'm okay."

"I know."

She looked at him.

That answer caught her off guard.

"You know?"

"Being okay doesn't mean you don't want someone there."

Elena looked away.

For a second, she almost let him come.

Then she remembered the ballroom.

The document.

The hesitation.

"I need to think."

Adrian nodded.

"I understand."

She opened the door.

Before getting out, she stopped.

"Adrian."

"Yeah?"

"If your father really knew my family..."

She paused.

She didn't finish.

She didn't need to.

What if everything between them had started before they ever met?

What if their relationship had been built on a history neither of them understood?

Adrian waited.

Finally, she said:

"Find out the truth."

He nodded.

Elena stepped out of the car.

She walked toward the entrance without looking back.

Adrian waited until the door closed behind her.

Then his phone rang.

The name on the screen made his stomach tighten.

Claire.

He answered.

"What do you want?"

Her voice came quietly.

"You found the photograph."

Adrian looked up at the apartment building.

"How did you know?"

"Because I left it."

The answer was so simple it made him angry.

"Why?"

A pause.

Then:

"Because I realized you were investigating the wrong person."

Adrian sat still.

"What does that mean?"

Claire's voice lowered.

"It means Elena is not the only person your father lied to."

The call ended.

Adrian stared at the screen.

Then he looked back at the building where Elena had disappeared.

For the first time that night, he wondered whether protecting Elena from the truth and protecting her from him were actually the same thing.

The Evidence She Found Beneath the Silence Changed Everything She Thought She Knew About Home

Mara Voss found the envelope taped beneath the bottom drawer of her father's desk three days after the bank sent her the foreclosure notice.

She had been looking for the property documents he always claimed were in that drawer, the ones he said would prove the house could never be taken from them.

Instead, her fingers touched a piece of paper hidden under a layer of old dust and a strip of yellowing tape.

May you like

The envelope had her name written across the front in her father's uneven handwriting.

Mara stood there for almost a minute without opening it.
