Chương 2

A tightening near his jaw.

A pause that lasted too long.

A breath he tried to hide.

Those were things other people missed.

Elena had learned them because Adrian was a man who rarely said when he was afraid.

"What does this mean?" he asked.

Claire folded her arms.

"It means you need to stop protecting someone who came into your life with a reason."

Elena stared at Adrian.

The worst part was not that Claire accused her.

The worst part was that Adrian did not immediately laugh.

He did not immediately defend her.

A year earlier, that hesitation would have destroyed her.

Tonight, it only made her stand straighter.

"My mother is sick," Elena said.

Her voice shook, but she continued.

"She is upstairs because you invited her here, Adrian."

His expression softened for a moment.

"I know."

"No, I don't think you do."

The words surprised both of them.

Elena looked toward the staircase.

Behind those doors was the woman who had spent her entire life making sacrifices so Elena could have opportunities she never received.

A woman who still apologized when she needed help.

A woman who had smiled tonight because she believed Adrian was different from everyone who had judged them before.

"I brought my mother here because I thought this was a safe place," Elena said.

Adrian looked away.

That small movement hurt more than anger would have.

Claire noticed it.

"Adrian, you need to see the evidence before emotions make this harder."

He looked at Claire.

"Leave the room."

The ballroom shifted.

Claire blinked.

"Adrian."

"Leave."

The command was quiet.

That made it worse.

Claire lowered the folder slowly.

"I am trying to protect you."

"And right now you are humiliating someone in my house."

For the first time that night, Claire looked uncertain.

Only briefly.

Then she stepped back.

"I hope you remember this moment when you learn the truth."

She walked toward the side entrance.

The guests began moving again, pretending not to watch.

Some left immediately.

Others stayed because curiosity was stronger than manners.

Elena hated that she understood them.

People always wanted to see what happened after someone broke.

Adrian waited until Claire disappeared.

Then he looked at Elena.

"I am sorry."

She laughed once.

It was not a happy sound.

"Are you?"

The question stayed between them.

Adrian lowered his eyes.

That was unusual enough that Elena noticed.

"I don't know what she showed me yet."

"That is the problem."

He looked up.

"What?"

"You believed there might be something to show."

He had no answer.

A server quietly began cleaning the cake from the floor.

The normal action felt almost insulting.

Someone was wiping away the evidence that the night had changed.

Elena stepped away from the mess.

"I need to check on my mother."

She looked at him.

"No."

The word came quickly.

Not cruel.

Just exhausted.

Adrian stopped.

"I need five minutes where nobody is deciding what I feel."

His face tightened.

"I never wanted this."

"I know."

That was the hardest part.

She believed him.

She also believed that wanting something and preventing it were different things.

Elena walked toward the staircase alone.

Behind her, the ballroom continued breathing.

Guests whispered.

Phones disappeared into pockets.

Staff cleaned broken flowers from the floor.

Adrian remained beside the ruined celebration, holding a document that had already changed the way he looked at the woman he loved.

And upstairs, Elena's mother opened her eyes before Elena reached the door.

"Was everything okay?" she asked.

Elena stopped in the hallway.

The question was gentle.

That made lying impossible.

She looked back toward the staircase.

Toward the ballroom.

Toward the man who had not betrayed her yet, but had not protected her either.

"No," Elena said quietly.

Her mother pushed herself higher against the pillows.

"What happened?"

Elena opened her mouth.

For a moment, she saw the easiest answer.

She saw herself saying it was nothing.

She saw herself protecting everyone else the way she always had.

Then she looked at the frosting still dried on her hand.

"I think someone is trying to take my life apart," she said.

Her mother studied her face.

"And do you know why?"

Elena shook her head.

Not yet.

Downstairs, Adrian unfolded the document again.

At the bottom of the page was a signature Elena had never seen before.

But Adrian had.

And the name beneath it belonged to someone who had been dead for six years.

The name beneath it belonged to someone who had been dead for six years.

Adrian's thumb pressed against the paper until the edge bent slightly.

He had seen that signature on thousands of pages, but never expected to see it attached to this.

Thomas Vale.

His father.

The man whose portrait hung in the west hallway and whose reputation still shaped every decision made inside the company Adrian inherited.

Claire had not found a random mistake.

She had found something connected to the person who built the entire world Adrian lived in.

That should have made him feel relieved.

Instead, it made him feel exposed.

He folded the document carefully and placed it back inside the folder.

A few guests remained near the bar, pretending to discuss the weather and business while watching him.

Adrian hated that he noticed.

He hated even more that he understood why they were watching.

For most of his life, people had not looked at him because they cared about him.

They looked because his last name carried consequences.

A waiter approached with a nervous expression.

"Mr. Vale, should we continue with dessert service?"

Adrian looked toward the destroyed cake.

"No."

The waiter nodded quickly.

"Understood."

The young man turned away, but Adrian stopped him.

"Actually, wait."

The waiter turned back.

"Make sure the kitchen saves the flowers from the cake."

The waiter looked confused.

"The flowers?"

"They were real."

Adrian glanced toward the staircase.

"They were chosen for someone."

May you like

The waiter nodded and walked away.

It was a small request.
