Chương 3

His family had built an entire identity around loyalty.

Adrian had inherited that instinct before he was old enough to question it.

He had spent years convincing himself that loyalty and blindness were not the same thing.

But tonight, standing in the aftermath of a public humiliation, he was not sure where one ended and the other began.

“What did the accountant say?” he asked.

Elena hesitated.

“Which one?”

That answer made him look back at her.

“The one you contacted.”

“Marcus Bell.”

Adrian’s face changed slightly.

“You spoke to Marcus?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Three days ago.”

“Why did he not tell me?”

“Maybe because I asked him not to.”

“That was not your decision to make.”

“No.”

Her voice softened.

“But it became my decision when I realized someone had already been moving money around and nobody wanted to answer simple questions.”

Adrian walked toward the desk and opened his laptop.

“Show me.”

She moved closer.

For the next twenty minutes, the only sounds in the room were keyboard clicks and Elena quietly explaining what she had noticed.

She had expected anger.

She had expected him to challenge every detail.

Instead, Adrian listened.

That scared her more.

Because anger would have been easier.

Anger was familiar.

Careful silence meant he was taking her seriously.

And if she was right, taking her seriously meant accepting something neither of them wanted to face.

When the files appeared on the screen, Adrian stared at the numbers.

Several payments had been made through a series of smaller accounts before reaching a consulting company Elena did not recognize.

The company name was ordinary.

Almost deliberately ordinary.

“That could be legitimate,” Adrian said.

“Yes.”

He looked at her.

“You sound disappointed.”

“I am.”

“Why?”

“Because I was hoping you would say it was impossible.”

He sat back.

For a moment, the powerful businessman disappeared.

He looked like a man who had just discovered the walls of his own house might not be protecting him.

“My father used to say the family survives because nobody panics.”

Elena folded her arms.

“And did it work?”

Adrian did not answer.

Outside the office window, the mansion grounds stretched into darkness.

The security lights illuminated the driveway where guests had left only minutes earlier.

Everything looked peaceful.

That was the problem.

Peace was often just distance from the thing causing damage.

A knock came at the door.

Neither of them moved.

The door opened slightly, and Adrian’s younger cousin Daniel stepped inside.

Daniel was twenty-seven, recently promoted into the family business despite spending most meetings trying to prove he was not as careless as everyone believed.

“Sorry,” he said.

“You should not be here.”

Daniel looked between them.

“I know.”

Adrian closed the laptop.

“What do you need?”

Daniel swallowed.

It was obvious he had rehearsed what he wanted to say and was already losing confidence.

“I heard people talking.”

“People always talk.”

“Not like this.”

Elena watched him carefully.

“What did you hear?”

Daniel glanced at Adrian first.

That small movement told Elena more than his words could.

“I heard Claire say you were going to find out tonight.”

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“Find out what?”

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“I do not know.”

“You just said she knew something.”

“She said you would finally see who Elena really was.”

The room went still.

Elena felt something cold move through her chest.

Not because the accusation surprised her.

Because Claire had chosen those exact words.

Not what Elena did.

Not what she found.

Who she was.

Adrian noticed her reaction.

“Daniel.”

“I am not taking sides.”

“You walked in here repeating something designed to hurt my wife.”

Daniel flinched.

“I am telling you what I heard.”

“No.”

Adrian’s voice remained quiet.

“You are telling me what you think is safe to repeat.”

Daniel looked down.

That was the first time Elena saw fear in him.

Not fear of Adrian.

Fear of being caught between people stronger than him.

“I should go.”

Adrian did not stop him.

After the door closed, Elena sat down for the first time that night.

Her exhaustion finally reached her.

“She planned this.”

Adrian remained standing.

“Maybe.”

“You do not believe that.”

“I believe Claire wanted to hurt you.”

“That is not the same thing.”

“No.”

He looked at the laptop.

“It is not.”

The next morning, Elena woke before sunrise.

She had barely slept.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the ballroom floor.

The cake.

The guests.

The way nobody moved.

She changed into a simple sweater and jeans and went downstairs to make coffee herself because the staff always made it too strong.

It was a small habit Adrian used to tease her about.

He once told her she was the only person he knew who could marry into a billionaire family and still complain about coffee.

She had told him that was because money did not fix bad coffee.

She missed the simplicity of conversations like that.

The kitchen was empty except for Rosa, the longtime house manager.

Rosa looked at her for a moment.

Then she quietly poured another cup.

“Fresh one.”

Elena smiled faintly.

“Thank you.”

Rosa placed it in front of her.

“You should not have been alone in that room.”

Elena looked up.

Rosa immediately looked away.

“I mean yesterday.”

“I know what you mean.”

The older woman wiped a clean counter that was already clean.

“People here forget that being afraid does not make something acceptable.”

Elena studied her.

“You saw?”

“Everyone saw.”

“Why did nobody help?”

Rosa stopped moving.

Because there was no easy answer.

Finally, she said, “Because this family has spent a long time teaching people what happens when they stand in the wrong place.”

Elena looked toward the doorway.

Adrian was standing there.

She did not know how long he had been listening.

Rosa noticed and quietly left.

Adrian entered the kitchen.

He looked like he had not slept either.

“There is something else,” he said.

Elena placed her coffee down.

May you like

“What?”

“Marcus Bell is gone.”
