Chương 2

Adrian looked at her.

“I make plenty of those.”

“This one will cost you.”

The words sounded less like a threat and more like a warning from someone who knew something he did not.

Before Adrian could answer, a man near the bar cleared his throat.

It was Vincent Hale, one of the family’s oldest business partners.

“Adrian.”

The room became quiet again.

Vincent looked uncomfortable, which was unusual.

He was the kind of man who could negotiate a billion-dollar deal without changing his expression.

“What?”

Vincent glanced at Elena.

Then at Claire.

“I think you should see something before you decide what happened tonight.”

Claire’s confidence disappeared for the first time.

Only for a second.

But Elena saw it.

Adrian saw it too.

“What is it?” Adrian asked.

Vincent reached inside his jacket and removed his phone.

“I received this twenty minutes before the party started.”

He held the screen out.

Adrian took it.

Elena could not see the message, but she watched his face change as he read it.

The controlled expression disappeared.

Not completely.

Just enough.

“What does it say?” Elena asked.

Adrian did not answer immediately.

That frightened her more than anger would have.

Claire stepped closer.

“Give me the phone.”

Adrian pulled it away.

“No.”

The room seemed smaller.

“What did you receive?” Elena asked again.

Adrian looked at her.

There was something behind his eyes that she had never seen directed at her before.

Fear.

Not for himself.

For something connected to her.

“Someone sent Vincent evidence that you were looking into my family’s accounts.”

Elena stared at him.

For a moment, the accusation was so absurd that she almost laughed.

“I was organizing the foundation records.”

“That is not what the message says.”

“Then the message is wrong.”

Adrian looked back at the screen.

“The message includes documents.”

The air left Elena’s chest.

She thought about the files she had requested last week.

The spreadsheets she had reviewed after noticing missing donations.

The questions she had asked the accountant who suddenly stopped responding.

She had never told Adrian because she wanted to confirm what she found before dragging him into another family conflict.

That decision now felt different.

Not private.

Not careful.

Dangerous.

Claire watched her reaction.

“You should have told him.”

Elena looked at Claire.

The cruelty in her voice was gone.

That was worse.

Because now Claire sounded certain.

“I was trying to protect him.”

“From what?”

Elena looked at Adrian.

The answer sat between them.

She did not know anymore.

Adrian lowered the phone slowly.

“Everyone leaves the ballroom.”

No one moved at first.

Then chairs scraped against the floor.

Guests began leaving in careful silence, carrying their curiosity with them.

Claire remained.

“You really think she is the victim here?”

Adrian did not look away.

“I think I do not know what happened.”

For Elena, that was almost harder than anger.

Claire walked past him toward the doorway.

“Good.”

She paused beside Elena.

“When you finally understand what you married into, you will wish you had listened tonight.”

Then she left.

Adrian stayed silent until the doors closed behind her.

The ruined cake remained on the floor.

The flowers remained scattered.

The party continued somewhere else in the mansion, because people like the Voss family knew how to continue celebrating even when something underneath them had started breaking.

Adrian looked at Elena.

“Show me the records you were reviewing.”

Elena swallowed.

“I deleted nothing.”

“I did not ask that.”

“I know.”

He rubbed his hand over his face.

A rare crack in the man everyone believed never lost control.

“Elena, why did you hide this from me?”

She looked at the empty doorway where Claire had disappeared.

“Because I was afraid you would choose your family before you chose the truth.”

Adrian did not answer.

And the fact that he needed time to answer hurt more than anything Claire had said.

Elena did not know how long they stood there after the last guest left.

The mansion had a way of swallowing time, especially at night, when the voices disappeared and every expensive object seemed to become a reminder of something nobody wanted to discuss.

She followed Adrian through the quiet hallway toward his private office, still wearing his jacket over her stained gown.

The sleeves covered her hands, and she kept pulling them down without realizing it.

Adrian noticed.

He noticed everything when he was not trying to control the situation.

“You can change,” he said.

“I am fine.”

“You are covered in cake.”

She looked down at herself.

A small, humorless laugh escaped before she could stop it.

“I noticed.”

For a moment, something almost normal passed between them.

Then it disappeared.

The office door closed behind them, cutting off the distant sounds of staff cleaning the ballroom.

Adrian placed Vincent’s phone on the desk.

The screen was dark now.

The message was gone because Vincent had locked his device, but the image of Adrian reading it remained in Elena’s mind.

“You need to tell me exactly what you found,” he said.

Elena stood near the bookshelves instead of sitting.

It was a small thing, but Adrian understood what it meant.

She was not comfortable enough to relax.

“I found transfers that did not match the foundation reports.”

“From where?”

“The charitable accounts connected to the family foundation.”

“How much?”

“I do not know yet.”

Adrian looked at her.

“You were investigating money connected to my family, and you did not think that was something I should know?”

“I thought if I came to you with a suspicion and nothing else, you would dismiss it.”

His expression tightened.

“That is unfair.”

“Yes.”

The honesty surprised him.

She looked exhausted rather than angry.

“It is unfair because you have not always done that.”

Adrian leaned against the desk.

“Then why say it?”

“Because sometimes you defend people before you know what they did.”

May you like

He looked away.

The silence between them had weight because neither of them could pretend she was completely wrong.
