Chương 8

"When you came."

The hallway blurred for a second.

Claire pressed her free hand against the wall.

"You're telling me he was in there for nearly five hours."

"I think so."

"You think so?"

"I wasn't watching the clock every minute."

Claire closed her eyes.

"But you ate lunch."

Marilyn said nothing.

"You fed Austin."

"Yes."

"You sat at that table."

"Yes."

"And Liam was behind that door."

Marilyn began to cry.

Not loudly.

Claire could hear the effort to suppress it.

"I asked Jeffrey twice."

Claire stared at the floor tiles.

"What did he say?"

"That Liam needed to learn."

Claire's voice went flat.

"Learn what?"

"To stop screaming."

"For his toy?"

"At first."

Claire opened her eyes.

"At first?"

Marilyn hesitated.

"He kicked the door."

Claire felt sick.

"He was trying to get out."

"I know."

"Did you open it?"

"No."

The word cracked.

Claire pushed herself away from the wall.

"Why?"

"Because Jeffrey told me not to."

Claire said nothing.

Marilyn continued too quickly.

"He said every time somebody gave in, Liam got worse, and Cynthia kept saying he was manipulative, and I knew that sounded wrong, but Jeffrey was so sure."

Claire's voice sharpened.

"He is four years old."

"I know."

"No, you don't get to say that now."

"I know."

"Stop saying it."

Marilyn went quiet.

Claire paced three steps and back.

A nurse passed carrying a tray of sealed syringes and glanced toward her.

Claire lowered her voice.

"What happened after lunch?"

"We were cleaning up."

"You were cleaning up while he was still in there."

"Yes."

"And then?"

"He stopped making noise."

Claire stopped walking.

"What?"

"He stopped."

Marilyn's breathing became unsteady.

Claire's scalp prickled.

"And nobody checked him?"

"I did."

Claire gripped the phone.

"When?"

"After maybe twenty minutes."

"How?"

"I opened the door."

Claire looked toward the exam room.

"And?"

"He was sitting on the floor."

"Was the chair still there?"

"I moved it."

"Was he conscious?"

"Yes."

"He was awake?"

"Yes."

"He looked at me."

Marilyn's voice collapsed.

"He asked for you."

Claire's eyes filled before she could stop them.

She pressed her knuckles against her mouth.

Marilyn kept talking.

"I told him you would come tomorrow."

Claire whispered, "Today was my pickup day."

"I know."

"No, pickup was at six."

"I know."

"So why was he under the table at three-thirty?"

Marilyn was silent.

Claire's fear changed shape.

"Marilyn."

"Cynthia said he shouldn't be at the table."

Claire felt cold all over.

"Why?"

"Because he was dirty."

"Then why didn't someone wash him?"

"He wouldn't let Cynthia take off his clothes."

Claire's jaw tightened.

"So because a frightened child wouldn't undress for her, you left him dirty."

Marilyn cried harder.

"Yes."

Claire looked up at the fluorescent lights.

"And the food?"

"He wouldn't eat when Cynthia brought him a plate."

"Where?"

"In the utility room."

Claire closed her eyes.

"So she brought food into the room but didn't let him out."

"Yes."

Claire's voice shook now.

"And then?"

"Jeffrey finally let him out because Austin wanted his birthday cake."

The answer made no sense at first.

"What does Austin's cake have to do with Liam?"

"Jeffrey didn't want him yelling during the candles."

Claire stared ahead.

A metal cart squeaked somewhere down the corridor.

"What happened when he came out?"

"He crawled under the table."

"Why?"

"I don't know."

"You were there."

"He wouldn't stand up."

Claire felt her knees weaken.

"He wouldn't?"

"No."

"Could he?"

"I don't know."

Claire leaned against the wall again.

"What did Jeffrey do?"

"He told him to quit acting ridiculous."

Claire's vision sharpened with anger.

"And Cynthia?"

"She said to leave him there if he wanted to behave like an animal."

Claire breathed through her nose.

There was the sentence.

Not spontaneous contempt when Claire walked in.

A continuation.

A language already established.

"Did Austin hear that?"

"Yes."

"Did Jeffrey?"

"Yes."

"And nobody objected."

Marilyn's crying stopped.

When she answered, her voice was almost empty.

"No."

Claire looked through the narrow window in the exam-room door.

Mara was sitting on the examination table with Liam on her lap.

She was letting him attach stickers to the back of her hand.

He had already covered three fingers.

Claire could not hear them.

She watched his mouth move.

Mara nodded solemnly to whatever he said.

Claire looked away.

"Why are you telling me now?"

Marilyn took a long breath.

"Because after you left, Jeffrey said we all needed to agree on what happened."

Claire went still.

"What did he want you to agree on?"

"That Liam had locked himself in."

Claire's grip tightened.

"The door doesn't lock."

"I said that."

"What did Jeffrey say?"

"That nobody would know."

Claire opened the recording app without thinking, then stopped.

Too late.

This call had not been recorded.

For a moment she hated herself for not anticipating it.

Then she caught the thought.

Marilyn was not evidence first.

She was a person making a choice.

Maybe a late one.

Maybe a cowardly one.

Still a choice.

"Will you tell child protective services what you just told me?"

Marilyn did not answer immediately.

Claire's heart sank.

Then Marilyn said, "Yes."

"Will you tell them even if Jeffrey asks you not to?"

Another pause.

"Yes."

"Will you tell the truth if it hurts him?"

Marilyn began crying again.

"He is my son."

Claire closed her eyes.

"I know."

"I love him."

"I know."

"I don't know how I let this happen."

Claire looked through the window again.

Liam had put a sticker on Mara's nose.

Mara was cross-eyed, trying to look at it.

For one second, Claire saw the child Liam had been on Friday.

Then he glanced toward the door.

The smile disappeared.

Claire's voice softened, but only slightly.

"You don't have to stop loving Jeffrey."

Marilyn breathed in.

"But you do have to stop protecting him from what he did."

A long silence passed.

Claire ended the call.

May you like

She stood alone in the hallway for several seconds.

Then her phone buzzed with a message from Jeffrey.
