Chương 9

The question sat between them.

Brooke did not answer for so long Claire thought the call had dropped.

Then she said, “Because I thought Dad was stealing from Ryan.”

Claire frowned.

“What?”

“I didn’t know it was your money.”

Brooke’s voice lost its defensive edge.

“I thought Dad was using Ryan’s credit or something.

They were fighting all the time.

Ryan kept saying Dad was going to ruin him.”

Claire looked at Naomi.

“Then why did you think Ryan would blame you?”

“Because he already did once.”

“For what?”

Brooke’s laugh was bitter.

“Take your pick.”

“Brooke.”

“Last summer, Dad transferred forty grand through an account with my name attached.”

Claire sat up straighter.

“What account?”

“A business account.”

“Your business?”

“No.”

“Then why was your name attached?”

“Because Dad had me sign paperwork when I was helping with some admin stuff.”

Brooke’s voice tightened.

“He said it was temporary.

He said I was just listed because he needed another officer.”

Naomi wrote rapidly.

“Do you still have the paperwork?”

“Maybe.”

“Find it later.

Do not go looking for it now.”

Brooke sighed.

“Yes, counselor.”

Naomi ignored that.

Claire stared at the canceled wire details on the laptop.

“Did Ryan know your name was on the account?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“He helped Dad set it up.”

Claire felt another piece shift.

Not a dramatic revelation.

Something worse.

Structure.

The fraud was beginning to look organized.

Layered.

Grant using Brooke’s name.

Ryan using Claire’s access.

Money moving through entities.

Each person positioned to absorb blame if something broke.

“Brooke, did Ryan ever ask you to move money?”

“No.”

“Did Grant?”

“Yes.”

“How often?”

“Three or four times.”

“And you did it?”

A pause.

“Yes.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“Why?”

“Because he’s my father.”

The answer was small.

Embarrassed.

Familiar.

Claire had no right to judge it.

Not today.

“Were the transfers from my accounts?”

“I don’t know.”

“Can you identify them if Naomi shows you dates and amounts?”

“Probably.”

Naomi nodded.

“Not over this call.”

Brooke’s voice became wary.

“Why?”

“Because I want you interviewed before everybody’s stories start contaminating each other.”

“That sounds ominous.”

“It’s practical.”

Claire checked the time.

Eight thirteen.

She had not slept.

Her obstetrician’s office would open soon.

Her company would begin sending Monday-morning messages in less than an hour even though half the staff was technically still off for the holiday.

She could not imagine answering a single one.

Her phone buzzed with an email from Ryan.

Subject line: PLEASE READ BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING ELSE.

Claire stared at it.

Naomi saw.

“Don’t open it yet.”

“Why?”

“Because right now you’re reacting to everything as it arrives.”

“I need to know what he’s saying.”

“You will.”

Claire’s irritation flared.

“Stop managing me.”

Naomi leaned back.

“Okay.”

The immediate retreat made Claire feel worse.

She opened the email.

Ryan had written three short paragraphs.

Claire, I know you’re scared and angry.

What happened last night was wrong, and I should have stopped Dad.

I was trying to keep him from escalating, but I handled it badly.

Claire stopped reading.

“Handled it badly.”

Naomi said nothing.

Claire continued.

The money is more complicated than it looks.

I did use funds from Meridian, but I always intended to replace them after the Lakewood units sold.

Dad put me in a position where I had to choose between letting his company collapse and protecting everyone.

I made the wrong decision, but I did not steal from you.

Claire laughed once.

It sounded ugly in the quiet room.

Naomi held out her hand.

Claire gave her the phone.

She read the rest aloud only after Claire nodded.

The Aspen property was meant to secure a private financing arrangement that would have covered the Meridian transfers and resolved the development debt.

Canceling that wire may trigger defaults that hurt all of us, including you.

Please do not make any more financial decisions until we talk.

I love you.

I love our baby.

I am begging you not to let my father’s behavior turn this into something bigger than it is.

Naomi handed the phone back.

Claire stared at the final sentence.

Something bigger than it is.

She thought of Grant’s cigarette.

Ryan’s hands.

The forged guarantee.

The canceled wire.

Four hundred eighty thousand dollars.

“Can he actually mean this?” Claire asked.

Naomi studied her.

“Which part?”

“That he doesn’t think he stole.”

Naomi looked toward the window.

“Yes.”

Claire frowned.

“He took money without permission.”

“People are very talented at renaming what they do.”

Claire read the second paragraph again.

Borrowing.

Protecting everyone.

Replacing later.

Family emergency.

Ryan had built himself a vocabulary where theft became sacrifice.

It was almost elegant.

That frightened Claire more than if he had simply admitted greed.

Her phone rang.

Detective Ortiz.

Claire answered immediately.

Ortiz had already spoken with Brooke.

She wanted Claire not to communicate further with Ryan about the finances for now.

She had also contacted the financial crimes unit after receiving the forged document and voicemail.

“This may split into separate investigations,” Ortiz said.

“The assault and the financial conduct.”

“Is Grant being arrested?”

“Officers are speaking with him and your husband now.”

Claire’s spine stiffened.

“At the penthouse?”

“Yes.”

“How did they get in?”

“Building security provided access after confirming ownership and your authorization.”

Claire looked at Naomi.

“Are they still there?”

“Yes.”

Claire’s breath caught.

Ryan was inside her home while police questioned him about attacking her and possibly stealing from her.

The sentence felt impossible.

Ortiz continued.

“I also need to ask whether you want officers to remain while you retrieve essential belongings later.”

Claire looked at the suitcase upstairs.

“My belongings are already there.”

“Understood.”

“No.”

She corrected herself.

“Not understood.”

Ortiz waited.

Claire glanced around Naomi’s townhouse.

The borrowed blanket.

The untouched coffee.

Franklin asleep under the radiator.

“I want him out.”

There was a pause.

“That is something you’ll need to handle through ownership rights and legal process.

May you like

I don’t want to advise you incorrectly.”

Claire appreciated that too.
