Chương 7

Claire put the phone down.
Ryan called again.
The repetition irritated something into motion inside her.
“He thinks I’m going to destroy everything.”
Naomi sipped her coffee.
“People are often very attached to the version of events where consequences are destruction.”
Claire stared at the vibrating phone.
“What if I answer and say nothing useful?”
“You are emotionally exhausted, pregnant, injured, and furious.”
“That sounds like a vote of confidence.”
“It’s a description.”
The call stopped.
A voicemail notification appeared.
Claire listened on speaker.
Ryan’s voice sounded rough.
“Claire, please.
I know how this looks.
I need you to hear me before you talk to anybody else.
My dad dragged me into something with the development.
I was trying to fix it.
I didn’t take your money for myself.
Brooke knew more than she’s going to admit.
Please don’t trust her.
And don’t freeze anything else because there are obligations you don’t understand.
Call me.”
The message ended.
Claire and Naomi looked at each other.
“There are obligations you don’t understand,” Claire repeated.
Naomi’s expression had changed.
“That sounded less like a denial than I expected.”
Claire replayed one line.
I didn’t take your money for myself.
Not I didn’t take your money.
She saved the voicemail and forwarded it to Naomi and Detective Ortiz.
Then she called the bank again.
The fraud department was not fully staffed yet, but the overnight representative noted her report and confirmed the digital lock remained active.
Claire asked whether any pending transfers existed.
There was a pause while the representative checked.
“One outgoing wire is scheduled for processing this morning.”
Claire gripped the phone.
“How much?”
“One hundred and fifty thousand dollars.”
Naomi lowered her coffee.
“To where?” Claire asked.
“I can’t provide full beneficiary information until identity verification is complete.”
Claire answered another string of security questions.
The representative placed her on hold.
Cheap piano music filled the kitchen.
Claire stared at the clock.
Seven fourteen.
Seven fifteen.
Seven seventeen.
When the representative returned, her tone had changed.
“The beneficiary name is Northstar Escrow Services.”
Claire wrote it down.
“What is the memo?”
Another pause.
“Closing funds.”
Naomi was already searching on her laptop.
“For what?”
“I can only see the payment instruction.
The reference field says Aspen Ridge, Unit Four.”
Claire looked at Naomi.
Naomi turned the screen.
An active real estate listing appeared.
A mountain condominium west of Denver.
Price: 1.35 million dollars.
Claire’s mouth went dry.
“Whose purchase is it?”
The bank representative could not tell her.
Claire canceled the wire.
The process required more verification.
A fraud supervisor came onto the line.
Claire repeated herself again.
Finally, the supervisor confirmed the transfer had been stopped before release.
Claire thanked her and ended the call.
The silence afterward felt enormous.
Naomi closed the listing.
“You just cost somebody a closing.”
Claire’s phone rang almost immediately.
Grant.
Not Ryan.
Grant had never called Claire before eight in the morning in the entire time she had known him.
She declined it.
He called again.
Then Ryan.
Then Grant.
Then Diane.
Three names flashing in rotation.
Claire watched without answering.
A message from Grant arrived.
You have no right to interfere with family business.
Claire stared at the sentence.
Then another.
Fix this now.
The fear Claire had seen in Ryan was gone from Grant’s words.
Grant was still operating from the old map.
Claire paid.
Grant commanded.
Everyone adjusted.
Her phone rang again.
This time Brooke.
Claire hesitated before answering.
“Brooke?”
Her sister-in-law was whispering.
“Dad’s losing it.”
“Where are you?”
“At my parents’.”
Claire stood.
“Why?”
“I never went home.”
Naomi looked up sharply.
Brooke’s voice dropped lower.
“Ryan told Dad the Aspen closing got blocked.”
Claire’s eyes moved to Naomi.
“How does Ryan know that already?”
“I don’t know.”
“You’re in the house with them?”
“I’m upstairs.”
“Get out.”
“I’m trying.”
“Then stop talking to me and leave.”
“Claire.”
Brooke inhaled shakily.
“There’s something else.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Of course there was.
“Say it.”
“I found the laptop.”
“Do not touch it.”
“I already did.”
Naomi muttered something under her breath.
Brooke continued quickly.
“I opened it before you told me not to.
It wasn’t password protected.
I saw the emails.”
“What emails?”
“Ryan and Dad.”
Claire gripped the back of the chair.
“About the transfers?”
“Yes.
And the condo.”
A floorboard creaked faintly through the phone.
Brooke stopped speaking.
“Brooke?”
“Wait.”
Claire heard muffled voices.
Then Grant, distant but unmistakable.
“Where is she?”
Brooke whispered, “I have to go.”
“Leave the laptop.”
“I copied the folder.”
Claire’s heart kicked.
“Brooke, listen to me.
Do not take that computer.”
Too late.
The line went dead.
Claire called back.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Naomi was already dialing.
“Who are you calling?” Claire asked.
“The police.”
Claire’s phone buzzed with an incoming file notification.
Brooke had sent a cloud-sharing link.
The folder title consisted of one word.
CLAIRE.
Claire looked at Naomi.
Then she opened it.
Inside were dozens of files.
Bank statements.
Loan documents.
Copies of Claire’s investment summaries.
Photographs of her driver’s license.
A scan of her signature.
And a PDF created four months earlier bearing a title that made her stop breathing.
SPOUSAL CONSENT AND ASSET GUARANTEE.
Claire opened the document.
Her name appeared at the bottom.
So did her signature.
Claire stared at it for three seconds before she knew what she was seeing.
“That’s not mine.”
Naomi came around the table.
“What?”
Claire pointed.
“I never signed this.”
Naomi bent toward the screen.
The document purported to guarantee debt connected to Front Range Development Partners using assets belonging to Claire.
Her signature looked convincing.
Too convincing.
Naomi read the date.
“Where were you on October seventh?”
Claire did not need a calendar.
She knew.
“That was the day I had the amniocentesis.”
Naomi looked at her.
“Ryan took me home afterward.”
Claire’s skin went cold.
“I was sedated.”
Naomi’s face changed first.
Not shock exactly.
May you like
Calculation.
She pulled the laptop closer and read the signature block again.
