Chương 2

"You walked into my house carrying luggage."
"I know."
"Do you?"
"That's enough," Ethan said.
Claire turned toward him.
"Don't tell me what's enough."
His face changed.
Only slightly.
But six years of marriage had taught Claire the small weather of Ethan Whitaker's expressions.
He was angry now.
Not because she was shouting.
Because she wasn't.
He placed the mug on the counter.
"I understand that you're hurt."
"No, you understand that I'm inconvenient."
"That's unfair."
Vanessa closed her eyes briefly.
Claire looked at her.
"Did he tell you I agreed to this?"
Vanessa opened her eyes.
Ethan said, "Claire."
Vanessa stared at him.
"You said she'd been told."
Silence settled over the kitchen.
The refrigerator motor clicked on.
Somewhere outside, a dog barked twice and stopped.
Claire looked from Vanessa to Ethan.
"When?"
Vanessa swallowed.
"He said you knew."
"Vanessa, don't."
"He said you two had been separated privately for months."
Claire felt her fingers curl against the countertop.
Ethan's expression remained controlled.
"We have been emotionally separated."
"That's a phrase people use after they're caught," Claire said.
"See, this is exactly why I wanted to discuss it differently."
"How considerate."
Vanessa pushed the water away.
"I shouldn't be here."
Ethan reached for her wrist.
She moved before he touched it.
That small withdrawal told Claire something she could not yet name.
Headlights swept across the kitchen wall.
A vehicle stopped outside.
Ethan turned toward the front windows.
"Are you expecting someone?"
Claire stood.
"Yes."
His attention snapped back to her.
"Who?"
The doorbell rang.
Claire walked toward the foyer.
Ethan followed.
"Claire, who did you call?"
She opened the door.
The woman on the porch looked to be in her early sixties, with silver hair cut bluntly at her jaw and a charcoal suit that appeared expensive without trying to prove it.
She carried a leather briefcase in one hand.
"Claire Hartwell Whitaker?"
Claire had not heard her maiden name spoken by a stranger in years.
"Yes."
"I'm Mara Voss."
Behind Claire, Ethan stopped walking.
Mara looked past her.
Nothing dramatic happened to Ethan's face.
That was what made the change unmistakable.
His mouth opened slightly, then closed.
"Mara."
"Mr. Whitaker."
Claire turned toward him.
"You know her?"
Ethan recovered quickly.
"She's an attorney."
"That wasn't my question."
Mara stepped inside only after Claire moved aside.
Vanessa had appeared at the kitchen entrance.
Her gaze moved from Mara to Ethan.
"What's happening?"
Ethan ignored her.
"You have no business here."
Mara removed her glasses from her handbag.
"Mrs. Whitaker invited me."
"No, she didn't."
Claire looked at Mara.
Mara looked back.
"Mr. Kane asked me to come on her behalf after she requested assistance."
The name landed harder than Claire expected.
Ethan stared at her.
"You called Dominic Kane?"
Claire heard something beneath his disbelief.
Fear.
"Why do you know that name?"
"Everybody knows that name."
"Not like that."
"Claire, you're upset."
Mara opened her briefcase.
"Mr. Whitaker, I recommend retiring that sentence."
"This is my house."
Mara removed a folder.
"That question may be more complicated than you think."
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Vanessa leaned against the doorway, one hand resting protectively beneath her belly.
Ethan's eyes dropped to the folder.
Claire saw the label before he did.
ROBERT ELLIOTT HARTWELL TRUST.
Her father's full name struck her with physical force.
She had not seen it printed on anything official since the months after his funeral.
"What is that?"
Mara placed the folder on the foyer table.
"Records your husband told you no longer existed."
Ethan stepped forward.
"You need to leave."
Mara did not move.
"Do not touch the documents."
"You're trespassing."
"Claire?"
Mara's eyes remained on Ethan.
"Do you want me to leave?"
Claire looked at her husband.
He had spent years making decisions in rooms where she was present.
Selling property.
Changing accountants.
Closing accounts.
Redirecting mail.
Every decision had arrived afterward as something already completed for her own good.
"No."
Mara nodded once.
"Then I remain."
Ethan laughed, but there was no humor in it.
"This is absurd."
He turned toward Claire.
"Whatever she's told you, this is exactly the kind of manipulation I've spent years protecting you from."
Mara opened the folder.
The first document contained her father's signature.
Claire recognized the long downward stroke in the H.
Her throat tightened.
She touched the paper without picking it up.
"My father signed this."
"Yes."
"What is it?"
"The original trust instrument, with amendments."
Claire looked at Ethan.
He was watching Mara.
Not the documents.
Mara removed another set of papers.
"These are county property records."
Another.
"Corporate filings."
Another.
"Loan documents."
Ethan's voice lowered.
"Stop."
Claire had almost never heard him say that word without confidence.
Mara finally looked at him.
"No."
She arranged three documents side by side.
Claire tried to read them, but legal descriptions blurred into numbers, parcel identifiers, signatures, dates.
"I don't understand."
"That's all right."
Ethan seized on it immediately.
"Exactly."
Mara's eyes flicked toward him.
"Understanding documents takes time, Mr. Whitaker."
Then she looked back at Claire.
"Not permission."
Claire pulled out the narrow chair beside the foyer table and sat.
"Start with what he told me was gone."
Mara rested one finger on the trust document.
"Your father's trust was never dissolved."
Claire heard Vanessa inhale behind them.
Ethan folded his arms.
"That's technically misleading."
Mara ignored him.
"Several assets were sold legitimately after Robert's death."
Claire nodded.
She remembered Ethan explaining estate taxes, creditors, maintenance costs.
"But several others were not sold in the manner represented to you."
Mara placed a property record in front of her.
"This parcel was transferred to Hartwell Ridge Holdings."
Claire recognized the address.
"That's the Briar development."
Ethan's first major project.
The one business magazines credited with transforming a small regional developer into a serious company.
Mara nodded.
"Hartwell Ridge Holdings later became a controlled affiliate of Whitaker Development."
Claire stared at Ethan.
He shook his head.
May you like
"That isn't what it sounds like."
"What does it sound like?"
