Chương 1

"Claire did not scream when Ethan told her the life she had been living was financed by his generosity.

She stood beside the bed they had shared for six years, holding the black phone so tightly that its edge pressed a white groove into her palm.

Downstairs, Vanessa's suitcase wheels bumped across the hardwood, followed by the low murmur of Ethan explaining where the linen closet was.

He was giving his mistress a tour of Claire's house.

That, more than the pregnancy or the suitcases or even the order to move into the guest room, made something inside Claire go strangely still.

The phone rang twice before a man answered.

"Claire?"

She had not heard Dominic Kane's voice in three years.

She sat on the edge of the mattress because her knees had begun to shake.

"How did you know it was me?"

"This number belongs to one person."

Downstairs, a cabinet opened.

Vanessa laughed at something Ethan said.

Dominic waited.

He did not fill the silence with questions.

Claire discovered that this made speaking harder.

"My husband brought a woman home."

Another pause.

"Is he hurting you?"

"No."

"Has he threatened you?"

Claire looked toward the bedroom door.

"Not exactly."

"Claire."

The way Dominic said her name reminded her of the clinic outside Memphis, of blood soaking through folded towels and a stranger refusing anesthesia because he needed to remain conscious.

She had been different then.

Tired, stubborn, competent.

Someone people listened to.

"He says she's staying here because she's pregnant," Claire said.

"His child?"

"Yes."

"Are you certain?"

"He says it is."

Dominic's breathing changed slightly.

Not surprise.

Calculation.

"He told me to move into the guest room."

"What do you want?"

The question caught her harder than Ethan's cruelty had.

For years, every difficult conversation had begun with what Ethan thought was sensible, what Ethan believed was safest, what Ethan had already arranged.

Claire stared at the half-open closet.

Her clothes hung beside his.

One of his gray jackets still had a dry-cleaning tag looped through the buttonhole.

"I don't know."

"Then don't decide tonight."

"He says I have nothing."

"Do you believe him?"

Claire almost said yes.

Instead she looked at the old phone in her hand.

"I don't know that either."

"Good."

She frowned.

"Good?"

"Uncertainty is better than believing somebody who benefits from your helplessness."

A floorboard creaked outside.

Claire stood.

"Ethan's coming."

"Lock the door."

She did.

The handle moved almost immediately.

"Claire."

Ethan knocked once.

Not hard.

That was his way.

He rarely needed volume because he had spent years teaching her that calmness meant authority.

"Open the door."

She said nothing.

"Vanessa needs to lie down."

Claire looked at the king-sized bed.

"There are four bedrooms."

"Don't do this."

"Do what?"

"Turn something difficult into something ugly."

She nearly laughed.

It came out as a small breath instead.

Dominic was still on the line.

Ethan tried the handle again.

"Who are you talking to?"

Claire did not answer.

His voice hardened.

"Claire, open the door."

Dominic said quietly, "I'm sending Mara."

"Who is Mara?"

"The reason you shouldn't sign anything your husband gives you."

Claire's stomach tightened.

"I didn't say anything about signing."

"No, you didn't."

For the first time that evening, fear moved in a direction other than inward.

"What do you know about Ethan?"

"Enough to send a lawyer."

"Dominic."

"Let Mara explain what she can prove."

The distinction mattered.

Claire had spent too many years being told things she could neither verify nor challenge.

"How long?"

"Forty minutes, maybe less."

"I don't want anyone hurt."

"Nobody is coming to hurt him."

"Promise me."

"I owe you my life, Claire."

"That's not a promise."

A faint sound came through the phone, almost amusement.

"No one will touch your husband."

She closed her eyes.

"Thank you."

"Don't thank me yet."

The call ended.

Claire remained beside the locked door, listening to Ethan move away.

She expected another demand.

Instead she heard him descend the stairs.

That frightened her more.

Ethan was patient when he believed patience would win.

She crossed to the bathroom and splashed cold water over her face.

Her reflection looked unfamiliar, not because she appeared devastated but because she didn't.

Her hair was untidy.

There was a faint mascara smudge under her left eye.

The pale blue cardigan had lost a button weeks ago, and she had kept forgetting to sew it back on.

She looked ordinary.

A woman could apparently discover that her marriage had been replaced while still looking like someone who needed to buy toothpaste.

She opened the bedroom door twelve minutes later.

Ethan was in the kitchen making tea.

Vanessa sat at the island with both hands around a glass of water.

She appeared younger than Claire had first thought, perhaps thirty, with dark hair pulled into a loose knot and exhaustion underneath carefully applied makeup.

The sight irritated Claire.

She wanted Vanessa to look triumphant.

It would have been easier.

Instead Vanessa looked nauseated.

Ethan glanced up.

"Feeling calmer?"

Claire hated that question immediately.

"I wasn't hysterical."

"I didn't say you were."

"You implied it."

He dropped a tea bag into a mug.

"Can we not litigate every word?"

Vanessa looked between them.

"I can get a hotel."

Ethan turned.

"No."

"I really can."

"No, you can't."

The answer was too quick.

Vanessa's mouth tightened.

Claire noticed it.

So did Ethan.

He softened his tone.

"You shouldn't be alone right now."

"I'm pregnant, Ethan, not concussed."

"Vanessa."

"There are hotels."

Claire pulled out a stool across from her.

"How far along are you?"

Ethan answered.

"Twenty-one weeks."

Claire kept her eyes on Vanessa.

"I asked her."

Vanessa rubbed a thumb over condensation on the glass.

"Twenty weeks and five days."

A tiny discrepancy.

Meaningless, probably.

Yet Ethan's jaw shifted.

Claire noticed that too.

"Have you been seeing him the entire time?"

"Claire," Ethan said.

Vanessa looked down.

"No."

"How long?"

"Please don't."

It was not defiance.

May you like

It sounded like embarrassment.

Claire felt a flash of anger so clean it almost relieved her.
