Chương 5

Usually right before they made them worse.

"You thought you could carry this alone."

Anthony nodded slightly.

"Yes."

"Why?"

His eyes moved toward the security footage.

Toward the image of Lena walking beside a stranger.

"Because everyone who gets close to this truth ends up losing something."

Marina wanted to tell him that fear was not wisdom.

She wanted to tell him that protecting secrets only protected the people who created them.

But she stopped.

Because she saw something in his face that she had not seen before.

Guilt.

Not the guilt of someone caught.

The guilt of someone who believed he had already failed.

A phone vibrated on the desk.

Everyone looked down.

It was Marina's phone.

The number was blocked.

She answered without speaking.

For several seconds, there was only breathing.

Then a woman's voice came through.

"Marina DeLuca."

Marina stood completely still.

She knew that voice.

Not because she had heard it recently.

Because she had spent twelve years wondering if she ever would again.

"Clara."

Anthony moved immediately.

Marina raised her hand, stopping him.

The voice on the other end trembled slightly.

"You have my daughter."

"No."

Marina looked at the security screen.

"Someone took your daughter from my house."

Silence.

Then Clara whispered something that made Marina's hand tighten around the phone.

"They were never after Lena."

Marina looked at Anthony.

"Then what are they after?"

Clara's breathing changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

"The box."

Marina glanced at her jacket.

The note was still hidden inside.

"The box is here."

"No."

Clara's voice cracked.

"That is why they took her."

Marina felt the room shift.

"What do you mean?"

"They needed you to open it."

Nobody moved.

Anthony looked at Marina.

The question on his face was immediate.

Marina ignored him.

"Clara, where is my niece?"

The line went quiet.

Then Clara said something that made every person in the room understand the night had become something much larger than a missing child.

"Marina, the girl they took is not the only child involved."

Marina kept the phone against her ear even after Clara stopped speaking.

For several seconds, neither woman said anything.

The silence felt different from the ones Marina had shared with Anthony.

Anthony's silences were usually walls.

Clara's silence sounded like someone standing beside a door she was afraid to open.

"Where is Lena?" Marina asked again.

"I don't know."

The answer came immediately this time.

Marina believed her.

That was the part she hated.

Believing Clara made the betrayal heavier, not lighter.

"You came to my house tonight."

Clara exhaled slowly.

"Yes."

"Why didn't you come to me?"

"Because I didn't know if you were still the same person."

Marina looked away from the security monitors.

The words found a place she did not expect.

"After twelve years, you thought I had changed."

"I thought everyone changes when they have something to lose."

Marina glanced at Anthony.

He was standing near the desk, listening without pretending otherwise.

She remembered him at seventeen, sitting in Victor's office after making his first mistake in front of the older men.

He had been angry because he thought embarrassment was worse than failure.

Victor had told him that a man could survive losing money, respect, even power.

But once people saw what scared him, they owned a piece of him forever.

Marina had hated that lesson.

She hated more that Anthony remembered it.

"Clara," Marina said, "what did you expect me to do if you showed up?"

"I expected you to ask questions."

"I am asking them now."

"No."

Clara's voice softened.

"You are asking because someone took Lena."

The accusation was quiet.

That made it sharper.

Marina did not respond.

Because it was partly true.

For years, she had accepted explanations she did not like because accepting them was easier than destroying the life built around them.

"What happened twelve years ago?" Marina asked.

A pause followed.

"The same thing that always happens in your family."

"Which is?"

"Someone decided the truth was more dangerous than the crime."

Marina closed her eyes briefly.

She hated how familiar that sounded.

She hated that she could hear Victor saying something similar.

Not the exact words.

The same belief.

The same certainty that some things were too complicated for ordinary people to understand.

"Who took Lena?"

"I don't know."

"You keep saying that."

"Because it is true."

Clara's voice became strained.

"But I know why."

Marina waited.

"They took her because they know she has something they need."

"The box."

"Yes."

Marina looked toward her jacket.

The small metal container felt heavier now.

Not because of what it contained.

Because of what everyone seemed willing to risk for it.

"What is in the box?"

"I don't know everything."

Marina almost laughed.

The phrase had become the language of the night.

Everyone knew enough to be afraid.

Nobody knew enough to be honest.

"Clara."

"I know what Victor believed."

The name stopped Marina.

Not because she had never heard it.

Because Clara said it like she was talking about a man she had known in a way Marina never did.

"What did he believe?"

"That if anything happened to him, the wrong person would inherit everything."

Marina looked toward Anthony.

He noticed.

"What does that mean?"

Clara did not answer.

The phone remained silent.

Then the call ended.

Marina stared at the screen.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Daniel was the first to speak.

"That was not enough information to act on."

"No," Marina said.

"It was enough to know we are behind."

Anthony pushed away from the desk.

"Marina."

She turned toward him.

"How much did Clara tell you?"

He did not answer immediately.

That hesitation was different from before.

This time, it looked like he was deciding whether honesty would protect anyone.

"Anthony."

"She contacted me three days ago."

"You already said that."

"She gave me the address where she was staying."

Marina felt anger rise again.

Not explosive.

Something colder.

May you like

"Where?"

"An apartment on the north side."
