Chương 4

"You don't give orders here."
Daniel did not move.
"Tonight, somebody has been inside your family's house without permission, cut the security system, and taken a child from a guarded room."
His eyes moved between them.
"So for the next few minutes, I am going to pretend everyone here is interested in keeping people alive."
Anthony stepped forward.
Marina lifted one hand.
The gesture stopped him.
Not because he respected the command.
Because he recognized the woman giving it.
"Daniel," Marina said, "find every exit point."
He nodded.
"Already doing it."
"Quietly."
"Why?"
"Because whoever took her wanted us to know they could."
Daniel looked at her.
"You think they are still here?"
Marina looked toward the dark hallway beyond the open door.
"I think people who want to disappear do not cut the lights and leave everyone wondering."
Anthony stared at her.
"You think it was a message."
"I think it was a choice."
Nobody spoke after that.
The difference mattered.
Messages were meant to be received.
Choices were meant to create consequences.
Daniel left first, moving through the darkness with the careful confidence of someone who had spent years expecting danger from ordinary places.
Anthony remained behind.
Marina noticed he kept looking toward the hallway.
Not the exits.
Not the windows.
The direction where Lena had been taken.
"You knew someone would come for her," Marina said.
Anthony did not answer.
"You did not know when."
Still nothing.
"You thought you had more time."
His jaw tightened.
"Stop trying to understand me like I am one of your problems to solve."
Marina looked at him.
"You are my nephew."
The answer seemed to surprise him.
Maybe because he expected judgment.
Maybe because he had forgotten that before he became a man she disagreed with, he had been a boy she protected.
"Then why are you looking at me like I am a stranger?"
The question stayed between them.
Marina had no easy answer.
Because the truth was she had been looking at him like that for longer than she wanted to admit.
Not because he had changed overnight.
Because she had slowly noticed the changes and chosen not to name them.
She had watched him become more comfortable with fear.
More comfortable with people obeying him.
More comfortable making decisions without asking who paid the price.
"I should have asked you harder questions years ago," she said.
Anthony looked away.
"That is not what you want to say."
"No."
"What do you want to say?"
Marina took a breath.
"I want to know if you brought Lena here because you were protecting her or because you were protecting yourself."
Anthony looked at her.
For once, he did not have a quick answer.
That scared her more than anything he could have said.
The emergency lights finally flickered on.
The hallway filled with a weak red glow.
The mansion looked different under that light.
Less like a home.
More like a place built to hide things.
Daniel returned seven minutes later.
He looked older.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
"Camera system is back."
"Show me."
They moved to the security room beneath the west side of the mansion.
It was a place most guests never knew existed.
Rows of monitors covered one wall.
The screens showed hallways, entrances, gardens, and parking areas.
The image quality was clear enough to recognize faces but not clear enough to answer every question.
Marina stood behind Daniel as he pulled up the footage.
"Start with the office."
The screen showed the hallway outside her private room.
At first, nothing happened.
Then a figure appeared.
A woman.
She moved quickly.
Not like someone unfamiliar with the house.
Like someone who knew exactly where she was going.
Marina leaned closer.
"Stop."
Daniel froze the image.
The woman wore a dark coat and kept her head lowered.
Anthony stared at the screen.
"Who is that?"
Marina did not answer.
Because she did not know.
But something about the way the woman moved felt familiar.
Not because of the face.
Because of the confidence.
The kind of confidence people earned by surviving places where they were not supposed to survive.
Daniel continued the footage.
The woman entered Marina's office.
Three minutes later, she left carrying Lena.
The child was not fighting.
That detail bothered Marina.
Children fought when they were afraid.
They screamed.
They grabbed onto furniture.
They made noise.
Lena walked beside the woman quietly.
Like she knew her.
Anthony noticed too.
"She knows her."
Marina looked at him.
"You sound certain."
"I am."
"Why?"
He did not respond.
Again.
The silence.
The same silence that had followed every important question.
Marina turned back to the screen.
"Find out who she is."
Daniel nodded.
Anthony stepped closer.
"No."
Both of them looked at him.
He looked uncomfortable with the attention.
"Do not send people after her."
Marina studied his face.
"Why?"
"Because if I am right, chasing her will make things worse."
"Who is she?"
Anthony looked at the frozen image.
"Someone who should not be alive."
The room went still.
Marina felt the weight of the sentence before she understood it.
"Explain."
Anthony rubbed his hand over his mouth.
"I cannot."
"You can."
"I cannot because I do not know everything."
"Then tell me what you know."
He looked exhausted.
Not defeated.
Something worse.
A person who had been carrying information alone because they believed sharing it would destroy everything.
"Three days ago, Clara contacted me."
Marina waited.
"She said she had proof my father was not the only person involved in what happened twelve years ago."
Daniel stopped typing.
Anthony continued.
"She said someone inside the family helped make her disappear."
Marina felt the old wound open.
"Who?"
Anthony looked at her.
"I never got the name."
"Why not?"
"Because before she could tell me, she was gone."
"And you never thought to tell me?"
"I thought I could fix it."
May you like
The honesty was almost painful.
Marina had spent years hearing men say they could fix things.
