Chương 7

“You know him,” Marcus said.

It was not a question.

Adrian looked at the screen.

“Daniel Cross.”

Marcus nodded.

“Your partner.”

“He was my friend.”

The correction mattered.

Marcus noticed.

“What happened?”

Adrian looked at the old photograph.

“Daniel knew me before everyone else did.”

“That sounds rare.”

“It was.”

Adrian leaned against the desk.

“Before the company. Before the money. Before people started calling me dangerous.”

Marcus waited.

Adrian did not usually talk about the past.

Not because he was hiding it.

Because he had buried it.

“Daniel was the person who told me I was becoming my father.”

Marcus looked at him.

“Was he right?”

Adrian looked away.

“That depends who you ask.”

The security screens flickered.

A file appeared.

Marcus turned quickly.

“I didn’t open that.”

Adrian stepped closer.

The file name was simple.

VALE FAMILY ARCHIVE.

The date was from eight years earlier.

Before Adrian’s father died.

Before Elena disappeared.

Marcus reached for the keyboard.

Adrian stopped him.

“Wait.”

“Why?”

“Because whoever sent this wants us to open it.”

Marcus looked at him.

“Isn’t that what we need?”

“Maybe.”

Adrian stared at the screen.

“But people who give you answers usually want to control what questions you ask next.”

Marcus nodded slowly.

“So what do we do?”

Adrian looked at the file.

“We open it.”

Marcus looked surprised.

“You just said—”

“I know what I said.”

Adrian sat down.

“That doesn’t mean I’m not curious.”

The file contained several documents.

Financial records.

Security reports.

Private messages.

The first document was dated two weeks before the explosion.

Adrian read the first page.

Then stopped.

Marcus noticed.

“What?”

Adrian did not answer.

He moved the document toward him.

Marcus read.

A transfer request.

A large amount of money moved from one of Adrian’s father’s private accounts.

The recipient was listed as Elena Vale.

Marcus looked confused.

“Your wife received money from your father?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know?”

“No.”

The second document was worse.

A meeting schedule.

Adrian’s father.

Elena.

Daniel.

Together.

The date was three days before the explosion.

Adrian leaned back.

For years, he believed Elena had been caught in a tragedy.

Now every piece of evidence suggested she had been involved in something before it happened.

His first instinct was anger.

Then something else appeared.

A memory.

Elena sitting across from him at breakfast.

Her hands wrapped around a coffee cup.

The way she looked like she wanted to say something but stopped.

At the time, he thought she was upset with him.

He had been too busy with business to ask.

That realization hurt more than the documents.

Not because it proved she betrayed him.

Because it reminded him that he had given her reasons to stay silent.

Marcus broke the silence.

“Sir.”

Adrian looked up.

“There’s a video.”

A file had appeared at the bottom of the archive.

No title.

No date.

Just a locked recording.

Marcus opened it.

A security warning appeared.

ACCESS REQUIRES SECONDARY AUTHORIZATION.

Adrian stared.

“Whose authorization?”

Marcus checked.

His face changed.

“Yours.”

Adrian frowned.

“My authorization?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Marcus looked at the system.

“The file was created using your personal credentials.”

“That’s impossible.”

“Yes.”

“Can you open it?”

Marcus looked uncertain.

“Not without your password.”

Adrian stared at the screen.

The password was not something anyone else knew.

Not his employees.

Not his security team.

Not even Elena.

Or at least he thought she did not.

He typed it in.

The system accepted it.

The video opened.

A grainy image appeared.

A room Adrian recognized immediately.

His father’s old office.

The recording quality was poor.

The date appeared.

Three days before the explosion.

His father sat behind the desk.

Across from him was Elena.

And Daniel.

Adrian felt his stomach tighten.

His father spoke first.

“If this goes wrong, Adrian cannot know.”

Elena looked angry.

“That’s not your decision.”

“It has to be.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“He deserves the truth.”

His father shook his head.

“No.”

The older man looked exhausted.

“If Adrian knows, he will do exactly what I would do.”

The video crackled.

Elena looked down.

“And what if we fail?”

His father answered quietly.

“Then Adrian loses everything.”

The screen froze.

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Adrian stared at the blank monitor.

The room felt impossibly quiet.

Because for years he had believed the explosion took something from him.

His family.

His hearing.

His future.

But the recording revealed something worse.

The people closest to him had made a decision.

They had chosen to keep him outside the truth.

And now he had to discover why.

Adrian watched the frozen image on the monitor until the screen went dark.

He did not move to reopen it.

He did not need to.

The words were already there.

If this goes wrong, Adrian cannot know.

The sentence repeated in his mind with a strange cruelty.

Not because his father had hidden something.

Adrian had spent his entire life surrounded by hidden things.

It was because the people in that room had not seen him as someone who could handle the truth.

They had seen him as a danger to it.

Marcus stood quietly beside him.

The security director knew better than to interrupt a moment like this.

Adrian’s anger had never been loud.

Loud anger was easy to predict.

Quiet anger was the kind that made people check their exits.

Finally, Adrian spoke.

“Play it again.”

Marcus looked at him.

“Sir?”

“Again.”

The video restarted.

The same room.

The same people.

The same impossible conversation.

Adrian watched every movement this time.

Not the words.

The details.

His father’s hands.

The way Elena avoided looking directly at him.

The way Daniel kept glancing toward the door.

They were afraid.

That was the part Adrian had missed the first time.

Not guilt.

Fear.

When the video ended again, Adrian leaned back.

“They weren’t planning something against me.”

Marcus looked surprised.

“What?”

“They were protecting something.”

“Something your father had?”

Adrian shook his head.

May you like

“Something they thought would destroy me.”

Marcus studied him.
