Chương 6

“No explanation.”

Adrian walked toward the window.

The city lights stretched beyond the property.

Thousands of people living ordinary lives.

Going home.

Eating dinner.

Arguing over small things.

They had no idea how easily everything could change.

His phone rang again.

This time, it was not unknown.

It was Victor Hale.

Adrian answered.

“What do you want?”

Victor laughed quietly.

“That’s interesting.”

“What?”

“You sound different.”

Adrian said nothing.

Victor continued.

“Something happened tonight.”

“Did you call to tell me you can observe the obvious?”

“I called because you’re about to make a mistake.”

Adrian looked at the photograph.

“You don’t get to warn me.”

“Maybe not.”

Victor’s voice became more serious.

“But I know what your father was hiding.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“What did you say?”

“Your father didn’t trust you.”

The words landed exactly where Victor intended.

Adrian remained silent.

“He built something behind your back.”

“You’re lying.”

“Am I?”

Victor paused.

“Ask yourself why Elena had access to a system she should never have known existed.”

Adrian’s grip tightened.

“How do you know about Elena?”

Victor did not answer.

That was enough.

Adrian already knew.

“You were involved.”

“No.”

Victor’s response was immediate.

“Not the way you think.”

“Then explain.”

“I can’t.”

Adrian almost laughed.

“Everyone suddenly has things they can’t explain.”

Victor ignored him.

“Listen carefully.”

The tone changed.

Not friendly.

Not threatening.

Something closer to fear.

“If Elena is alive, you are not the only person looking for her.”

Adrian looked toward the hallway.

“Who else?”

Victor hesitated.

Then said:

“The people who killed your father.”

The call ended.

Adrian remained still.

Marcus watched him.

“What did he say?”

Adrian looked at the phone.

“He confirmed something.”

“What?”

“Victor Hale is afraid.”

Marcus frowned.

“That’s unusual.”

“Yes.”

Adrian looked at the photograph in his hand.

“And that means whatever he knows is bigger than money.”

Outside the security room, a small voice interrupted them.

“Daddy?”

Adrian turned.

Lily stood at the doorway holding her rabbit.

Clara was behind her, apologetic.

“I’m sorry, she followed me.”

Adrian walked over.

He did not ask why she was awake.

He already knew.

She had felt the house changing.

He picked her up.

She rested her head against his shoulder.

“Did Mommy really leave?”

The question stopped him.

He looked at Clara.

Then Marcus.

Neither moved.

Adrian carried Lily back toward the living room.

He sat with her beneath the soft light while the rest of the mansion continued searching for answers.

“I don’t know.”

It was the first time he had ever said those words to his daughter.

Lily touched his jacket.

“Are you going to find out?”

Adrian looked at the photograph.

At Elena’s handwriting.

At the life he thought he understood.

“Yes.”

His voice was quiet.

“I’m going to find out.”

But as he said it, his phone buzzed one more time.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

A single photograph.

It showed Elena standing outside the mansion.

Taken tonight.

And beside her was someone Adrian recognized immediately.

Someone who was supposed to have died years ago.

Adrian stared at the photograph on his phone until the screen dimmed.

He touched it once, waking it again, hoping that somehow the image would change into something easier to understand.

It did not.

Elena stood outside the mansion gates beneath the same trees he passed every morning.

Her hair was shorter than he remembered.

Her face looked older.

But it was her.

And standing beside her was Daniel Cross.

Daniel had been Adrian’s closest friend before he became the man everyone feared.

He had been the person Adrian trusted when trust still came naturally.

He had also been buried eight years ago after a car accident that left nothing behind except a burned vehicle and official records.

Adrian had attended the funeral.

He had watched the coffin lower into the ground.

He had listened to people tell him that some losses never stop hurting.

Now Daniel was standing beside Elena in a photograph taken that night.

Alive.

Adrian lowered the phone.

Nobody spoke.

Even the bodyguards understood that whatever they were seeing was not a normal threat.

This was something older.

Something personal.

“Marcus.”

The security director looked up.

“Sir.”

“Shut down every outside connection.”

Marcus hesitated.

“Every connection?”

“Every one.”

“That will take the house offline.”

“I know.”

Adrian handed him the phone.

“Do it.”

Marcus studied the photograph.

He did not ask who Daniel was.

He knew enough about Adrian’s history to understand that some questions had consequences.

Within minutes, the mansion changed.

The quiet hum of technology disappeared.

Screens went black.

Automated systems stopped responding.

The expensive house became strangely ordinary.

No cameras.

No digital locks.

No hidden network.

Just walls and people.

Adrian preferred it that way.

A machine could be manipulated.

A person could be watched.

He turned toward the guards.

“No one enters or leaves.”

One guard nodded.

“Understood.”

“Not even employees.”

The man paused.

“Even staff?”

“Everyone.”

The order created discomfort.

These people worked for Adrian because they believed he protected them.

But protection had limits.

And tonight those limits were being tested.

Clara stood near the stairs with Lily in her arms.

The child had fallen asleep against her shoulder.

Adrian looked at her.

For a moment, he considered sending Lily somewhere safer.

Then he realized there was nowhere he trusted more than the place where she already was.

That thought bothered him.

Because the mansion was supposed to be the safest place in her life.

Now it was the center of the danger.

“Clara.”

“Yes?”

“Take her to my room.”

Clara looked surprised.

“Your room?”

“Yes.”

She understood immediately.

Adrian’s bedroom was the only place in the house without external access.

He had designed it that way after the explosion.

A place where nobody could reach him.

A place where he could hear nothing but silence.

Now he was giving it to his daughter.

As Clara carried Lily upstairs, Adrian returned to the security room.

Marcus was reviewing old files.
