Chương 5

The silence that followed was immediate.
Marcus’s expression barely changed.
But Adrian noticed.
A small pause.
A slight movement of the eyes.
A hesitation.
The same hesitation that Elena had learned to recognize years ago.
“You have been talking to Daniel.”
Marcus’s voice became colder.
Adrian stood from his chair.
“No.”
He walked around the desk.
“I have been listening.”
Marcus watched him carefully.
“And what did you hear?”
“The truth.”
A faint smile appeared on Marcus’s face.
“Adrian, be careful.”
“Careful?”
Adrian laughed quietly.
The sound carried no humor.
“That is the word everyone uses when they want me to stop asking questions.”
Marcus stepped closer.
“You are emotional because of last night.”
“No.”
Adrian shook his head.
“For the first time in years, I’m thinking clearly.”
Marcus’s face hardened.
“You are going to throw away everything because of one woman?”
The sentence was exactly what Adrian expected.
And that was when he understood.
Marcus had never seen Elena as a person.
Only as an obstacle.
“No.”
Adrian looked directly at him.
“I am finally protecting what actually matters.”
Marcus stared at him.
“You really believe this?”
“I do.”
“After everything we built?”
Adrian’s expression changed.
“That is the problem.”
Marcus looked confused.
“What?”
“You keep saying we built something.”
Adrian pointed toward the city outside.
“You mean this.”
He looked around the office.
“The companies.”
“The money.”
“The reputation.”
He paused.
“But you never mention the people destroyed along the way.”
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
“You are letting guilt make you weak.”
Adrian looked at him for several seconds.
Then he quietly said,
“No.”
His voice was calm.
“Guilt is the reason I finally stopped being weak.”
Marcus left without another word.
But Adrian knew the fight was only beginning.
For years, Marcus had controlled situations from the shadows.
He would not disappear simply because the truth had been discovered.
Across the city, Elena returned to the place where everything started.
The old hospital.
The building had changed over the years.
The walls were brighter.
The entrance had been renovated.
But the memories remained.
She stood outside the emergency department for several minutes before walking inside.
A nurse at the front desk recognized her immediately.
“Ms. Hart?”
Elena looked surprised.
“Yes?”
The nurse smiled gently.
“I thought I remembered you.”
Elena looked around.
“I was here years ago.”
The nurse nodded.
“I know.”
She lowered her voice.
“You were one of the strongest patients we ever had.”
Elena looked away.
“I didn’t feel strong.”
The nurse smiled sadly.
“Most strong people don’t.”
The words stayed with Elena.
She walked through the hallway slowly.
Every step brought back pieces of the past.
The room where she woke up.
The window where she watched the rain.
The place where she learned her life would never be the same.
But this time, she was not walking through it as a victim.
She was walking through it as someone who had survived.
A doctor approached from the other side of the hallway.
“Elena?”
She stopped.
Dr. Samuel Reed.
The doctor who treated her that night.
The person who knew the truth before anyone else.
“I wondered if you would ever come back.”
Elena looked at him.
“I needed answers.”
Samuel nodded.
“I thought you might.”
They sat in a quiet waiting area.
The doctor placed a small file on the table.
“I kept this because I believed someday you would want to know everything.”
Elena stared at it.
“What is it?”
“Your original medical report.”
She opened it carefully.
The pages were old.
The ink had faded.
But the words remained.
She read through the details.
The injuries.
The emergency procedures.
The notes from the night.
Then she reached a section that made her stop.
“There was another person there.”
Samuel nodded.
“Yes.”
“Who?”
He looked uncomfortable.
“A witness.”
Elena looked up.
“Why don’t I know about this?”
“Because the person refused to give a statement.”
“Why?”
Samuel looked down.
“Because they were afraid.”
Elena turned the page.
There was a name.
A name she had never seen before.
Her breathing changed.
“Who is this?”
Samuel answered quietly.
“Someone who was there before the accident happened.”
The room became silent.
Elena looked at the name again.
She felt a strange feeling in her chest.
Because she realized the night she thought she understood was still hiding pieces from her.
“What did they see?”
Samuel hesitated.
“They saw someone arguing with you.”
Elena’s hand tightened around the paper.
“Who?”
The doctor looked at her.
“Adrian.”
The answer hurt.
Even after everything.
Even after the truth.
It still hurt.
“But he told me he arrived after.”
Samuel nodded.
“That is what he told everyone.”
Elena stared at the report.
“Are you saying he lied?”
“I’m saying there are parts of that night that even Adrian may not remember correctly.”
She looked confused.
“Why?”
“Because he was injured too.”
Elena froze.
“What?”
Samuel leaned forward.
“The accident affected both of you.”
The memory returned.
The rain.
The headlights.
The sound of metal.
She remembered waking up alone.
But she never remembered what happened before.
Samuel continued.
“There was another vehicle.”
Elena looked up.
“What?”
“The investigation was closed quickly.”
“Why?”
The doctor did not answer immediately.
And that silence gave her the answer.
Because someone had made sure it ended.
Elena looked at the file again.
The scar on her back suddenly felt connected to something much larger.
Something Adrian had never told her.
Something Marcus might have been hiding.
Her phone began ringing.
She looked at the screen.
Adrian.
She almost ignored it.
Then she answered.
“Elena.”
His voice sounded different.
More urgent.
“I need to tell you something.”
She stood slowly.
“What happened?”
A pause.
Then Adrian said the words that changed everything.
“Marcus knows we found the evidence.”
Elena’s expression hardened.
“And?”
“He is leaving the country tonight.”
She looked back at the old medical file in her hand.
The missing pieces.
The hidden witness.
May you like
The accident that was never fully explained.
The truth was moving closer.
