Chương 3

He remembered the first time he saw her.

She was not wearing expensive clothes.

She was not surrounded by powerful people.

She was sitting alone at a small cafe, reading an old book with a cup of coffee beside her.

She had laughed when he accidentally spilled water on the table.

She did not know his name.

She did not care about his reputation.

She only saw him as a person.

That was the thing he missed the most.

Not her beauty.

Not her kindness.

Not the life they built together.

He missed the way she made him feel human.

His phone vibrated.

He looked down and saw dozens of messages from his assistants.

News was already spreading.

People were asking questions.

Investors wanted explanations.

Reporters wanted statements.

For years, Adrian had known exactly how to control a crisis.

But this time, there was nothing to control.

The truth had already reached everyone.

Meanwhile, Elena sat in the back seat of a quiet car moving through the city streets.

The driver glanced at her through the mirror but said nothing.

He knew better.

She watched the lights pass by the window.

Every street carried a memory.

The restaurant where Adrian proposed.

The apartment where they planned their future.

The hospital where she woke up and realized her life had changed forever.

She placed a hand against the scar beneath her gown.

For years, she avoided touching it.

Tonight, she did not.

She no longer saw it as a reminder of what happened to her.

She saw it as a reminder of what she survived.

Her phone lit up with a message.

It was from her younger sister, Claire.

I saw everything.

Are you okay?

Elena stared at the screen for several seconds before answering.

I am now.

The response came almost immediately.

I’m proud of you.

A small smile appeared on Elena’s face.

It was the first real smile she had felt all night.

Because she realized something important.

She had spent years waiting for Adrian to admit the truth.

But the moment he finally did, it was no longer the thing she needed.

She did not need him to validate her pain.

She did not need him to confirm that she deserved better.

She already knew.

The next morning, the story reached everyone.

Photos from the ballroom appeared online.

People discussed the confrontation.

Some judged Adrian.

Some defended him.

Some wondered what had happened behind closed doors.

But Elena refused to read any of it.

She sat by her apartment window with a cup of tea, watching the sunrise.

For the first time in years, the morning felt peaceful.

Then someone knocked on her door.

She looked toward the entrance.

Her heart stopped for a moment.

Because standing outside was someone she never expected to see again.

A person connected to the night everything changed.

And the moment she opened the door, she realized the truth from the ballroom was only the beginning.

The person standing outside her door was the last person Elena expected to see.

It was Daniel Mercer.

Adrian’s older brother.

The man who had stayed silent for years while Elena’s life slowly fell apart.

He stood in the hallway holding a worn leather folder against his chest.

His expression was serious, but not cold.

It was the expression of someone carrying a truth that had become too heavy to keep hidden.

Elena did not open the door any wider.

“What are you doing here?”

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“I know I don’t deserve to ask for anything from you.”

The statement surprised her.

Because Daniel had always been the calm one.

The person who watched everything but rarely spoke.

He had built a reputation for seeing through people.

Yet he had watched Elena suffer and said nothing.

“I came because you deserve to know what happened.”

Elena’s hand remained on the door.

“What happened?”

Daniel looked at the folder in his hands.

“The night you got hurt wasn’t an accident.”

The words made the air disappear from the room.

For years, Elena had carried the memory of that night like a shadow.

She remembered the rain.

The broken glass.

The ambulance lights reflecting against the street.

She remembered Adrian arriving too late.

She remembered waking up with a scar that changed everything.

But she had never known the full story.

“Why are you telling me this now?”

Daniel took a slow breath.

“Because Adrian finally admitted what he did wrong.”

Elena’s eyes narrowed.

“That doesn’t explain anything.”

“No.”

Daniel nodded.

“It doesn’t.”

He looked away.

“But watching him lose you tonight made me realize I was protecting the wrong person.”

Elena stepped back slightly.

For the first time, she opened the door enough for him to enter.

Daniel walked inside quietly.

The apartment was simple.

Nothing like the luxury homes associated with the Vale family.

There were books stacked on shelves.

Small plants near the windows.

Photos placed carefully on the walls.

A life built around peace instead of power.

Daniel placed the folder on the table.

“I should have given this to you years ago.”

Elena looked at it but did not touch it.

“What is it?”

“Evidence.”

The word felt heavy.

“Evidence that someone wanted you to disappear.”

Elena stared at him.

“Someone?”

Daniel hesitated.

“There was a person inside Adrian’s company who believed you were a threat.”

“Why would I be a threat?”

“Because you knew Adrian before he became the man everyone feared.”

Elena looked confused.

Daniel continued.

“You knew his weaknesses.”

The room became silent.

“You reminded him that he was human.”

Elena looked down.

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“It does when someone builds their entire world around control.”

Daniel opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Old emails.

Financial records.

Photographs.

Elena picked up the first page.

Her hands became still.

The name at the top belonged to someone she knew.

Someone she trusted.

“Marcus?”

Daniel nodded.

Elena felt a cold feeling move through her chest.

May you like

“No.”

“I wish I could say I was wrong.”
