Chương 4

He looked at Emily again.
She tried to get up with him.
Pain in her hip folded her halfway back down.
Stallone moved instinctively from near the island.
An officer lifted one hand toward him.
He stopped immediately.
The paramedic helped Emily instead.
Stallone nodded once and stayed where he was.
Emily noticed the restraint.
Men had been deciding when to touch her all night.
His refusal to make that decision for her landed somewhere deep.
Noah stood carefully.
He could put weight on both legs.
That seemed to satisfy the paramedic for the moment.
Emily got upright with help and sat in a dining chair.
The chair Daniel had kicked sideways remained crooked across the floor.
An officer moved it out of the walkway.
The blue plate stayed beneath the table.
Food still clung to it.
Emily thought she should pick it up.
The impulse was so strong she almost leaned down.
Then she stopped herself.
The kitchen could stay dirty.
The thought felt rebellious.
Another officer entered from the back and spoke quietly to the others.
Emily heard the words ambulance and domestic and child present.
Daniel heard them too.
He straightened.
“Domestic?”
His voice rose for the first time since the police arrived.
“This isn’t what you think.”
Emily looked at him.
He seemed offended.
That nearly made her laugh.
The sound that came out was more like a cough.
Daniel stared at her.
The officer beside him shifted his body between them.
Daniel’s face changed again.
He turned cooperative.
He asked whether he could explain what happened.
The officer said he would have an opportunity later.
Daniel asked whether he was under arrest.
The officer said he was being detained while they sorted out the scene.
Daniel nodded as if this were an administrative inconvenience.
Then he looked at Stallone.
“You assaulted me.”
Stallone said nothing.
Daniel gave a humorless smile.
“That’s on camera somewhere.”
The officers exchanged a glance.
Emily’s stomach tightened.
Of course Daniel would find a way to make rescue itself into evidence against them.
Stallone remained still.
The officer nearest him asked for his identification and a statement.
Stallone reached slowly toward the inside of his jacket.
The officer told him to stop.
Stallone stopped.
The officer stepped closer, confirmed what he was reaching for, and allowed him to continue.
Emily watched every small movement.
No sudden gestures.
No wounded pride.
No challenge.
Only compliance.
Daniel watched too.
Something in his expression hardened.
The second paramedic arrived with a stretcher but left it near the hallway after seeing Emily seated upright.
The first paramedic said Emily needed evaluation at the hospital because strangulation injuries could become more serious after the immediate event.
Emily looked at Noah.
He heard the word hospital and went pale.
“I’m fine.”
“You’re coming with me.”
Emily spoke too quickly.
Noah nodded.
The paramedic explained that another adult could ride with him if necessary, depending on transport arrangements.
Emily shook her head.
“He stays with me.”
Her voice was hoarse but firm.
No one argued.
Daniel laughed once under his breath.
Emily looked toward him.
He had always done that when she tried to sound decisive.
A tiny laugh.
Not enough for anyone to accuse him of mocking her.
Enough to make her question herself.
This time an officer heard it.
“Something funny?”
Daniel’s smile vanished.
“No.”
The officer continued watching him.
Emily looked down at Noah’s hand inside hers.
His nails were dirty from crawling across the kitchen floor.
There was a small scrape across one knuckle.
She rubbed her thumb beside it.
Noah whispered that he was sorry.
Emily thought she had misheard him.
“For what?”
He looked toward Daniel and then back at her.
“I moved.”
Her throat closed for a reason the paramedic could not examine.
“No.”
She bent closer.
“No, baby.”
Noah’s face crumpled, but he fought it.
“You told me not to.”
Emily pulled him against her carefully.
“You did nothing wrong.”
Those words felt too small.
She said them again anyway.
Daniel looked over.
His mouth tightened.
Emily saw that too.
He hated when she and Noah formed a world he could not enter.
He had always called it coddling.
She had believed him often enough to be ashamed of the tenderness.
Now she held Noah tighter.
The officer collecting statements asked whether there were weapons in the house.
Emily hesitated.
Daniel’s eyes snapped toward her.
The officer beside him noticed the movement and stepped closer.
Emily stared at the refrigerator handle.
“There’s a handgun in the bedroom closet.”
Daniel immediately said it was locked.
Emily kept speaking.
“He keeps the key on his car keys.”
Daniel said her name.
Not loudly.
Just Emily.
The officer turned him around and placed his hands behind his back.
Metal cuffs clicked shut.
Daniel stiffened.
For the first time that night, Emily saw real fear replace calculation.
Not fear of hurting her.
Not fear of losing Noah.
Fear of losing control over what happened next.
The officer asked where the car keys were.
Emily looked toward the counter.
A leather key ring lay beside Daniel’s coffee mug.
One of the officers picked it up with a gloved hand.
Daniel began explaining that he had a permit.
The officer told him no one was debating ownership yet.
They were securing the scene.
Emily watched Daniel’s shoulders sink by half an inch.
It was almost nothing.
She noticed anyway.
She had spent years learning him in fractions.
Now those fractions belonged to someone else’s report.
The back door remained open.
Cold night air moved into the kitchen and lifted the corner of one of Noah’s drawings on the refrigerator.
Somewhere outside, a neighbor called another neighbor’s name.
A dog barked twice and stopped.
The world had begun noticing them.
Emily once believed exposure would be the worst thing that could happen.
May you like
Sitting beside her son with bruises forming around her throat, she began to understand that secrecy had already charged a higher price.
The paramedic wrapped a blood-pressure cuff around Emily’s arm while an officer photographed the marks beginning to rise along her neck.
