Chương 2

He had made a cup after dinner.

He always drank coffee too late and blamed insomnia on work.

Emily dug both hands beneath his wrist.

His grip tightened.

Pressure filled her head.

She kicked against the floor but could find no leverage.

Noah was moving.

She saw him beyond Daniel’s shoulder.

She shook her head.

No.

Stay there.

Noah crawled anyway.

Daniel’s attention remained fixed on Emily.

“You should’ve stayed down.”

The words required almost no effort from him.

Emily tried to answer, but only a broken sound escaped.

Her fingers clawed at his wrist.

She stopped trying to pry each finger loose and shoved sideways instead.

Daniel adjusted his knee against her ribs.

The pressure worsened.

The edges of the room began to dim.

Then Noah grabbed Daniel’s forearm.

“Stop!”

Daniel jerked in surprise.

Noah pulled with both hands, his sneakers slipping on the tile.

He was ten years old and barely reached Daniel’s shoulder when standing.

His effort accomplished almost nothing.

But Daniel looked at him.

Emily dragged in a thin thread of air.

“Noah, get back.”

Her voice barely existed.

Noah did not obey.

Daniel swung his arm to shake him loose.

Noah fell onto one hip and struck the dining table.

The blue plate rattled but stayed where it was.

Something changed in Emily then.

Not courage.

Courage sounded clean.

This was uglier.

She jammed her thumb against the inside of Daniel’s wrist and twisted her body with everything she had.

His grip loosened.

She sucked in air so sharply it hurt.

Daniel recovered and reached for her again.

A violent crash came from the back of the house.

The back door had struck the wall.

Daniel stopped.

Noah stopped.

Emily lay coughing beneath him, one hand around her throat.

Footsteps came through the dark hallway.

Not running.

Fast, heavy, deliberate steps.

Daniel rose halfway and turned.

A broad-shouldered man entered the kitchen wearing a dark leather jacket and black jeans.

Silver hair caught the warm ceiling light.

His weathered face held none of Daniel’s panic.

Sylvester Stallone had come through the back entrance because the emergency operator had routed the open call to responders already searching the neighboring property after hearing the struggle through the connection, and he had been with the first arriving security detail when Noah’s frightened voice carried from inside.

None of that mattered to Emily in the moment.

What mattered was that Daniel’s hand was no longer around her throat.

Daniel stood.

He looked from Stallone to the hallway and seemed to calculate whether he could reach the back door.

Stallone kept walking.

Daniel backed toward the cabinets.

“Stay out of this.”

Stallone did not answer.

Emily pushed herself toward Noah.

Her arms trembled.

Noah crawled to her before she could reach him.

She caught his striped shirt in both fists and pulled him against her.

Daniel took another step backward.

The cabinet doors were directly behind him now.

Stallone closed the remaining distance.

Daniel raised his hands.

For an instant he seemed prepared to explain.

Emily recognized that instinct too.

Daniel believed explanation was another form of control.

He had explained bruises.

He had explained missing money.

He had explained why Emily misunderstood conversations she remembered perfectly.

His mouth opened.

Stallone grabbed the front of his plaid shirt and hauled him away from Emily.

Daniel stumbled forward.

His right hand came up.

Stallone released the shirt, planted his feet, and struck him.

The punch landed squarely across Daniel’s face.

Emily heard the contact before Daniel reacted.

His head snapped sideways.

His balance disappeared.

He staggered backward into the wooden cabinet unit.

His shoulders struck first.

Then his full weight hit.

One cabinet door flew open.

The hinges tore from the frame.

A shelf cracked beneath Daniel as he crashed through it.

Bowls, glasses, a stack of plastic containers, and an old metal colander spilled around him.

The second door broke loose and landed across his legs.

Daniel hit the floor among splintered wood and scattered kitchenware.

A glass rolled in a slow circle before tipping onto its side.

Then the kitchen became strangely quiet.

Emily coughed.

The sound seemed to wake Noah from whatever shock had held him.

He threw both arms around her.

She pulled him close.

Too hard at first.

He made a small sound.

Emily loosened her grip immediately.

“I’m sorry.”

Noah buried his face against her sweater.

She felt him shaking.

Her own body shook with him.

Across the kitchen, Daniel groaned beneath the broken cabinet door.

He tried to push himself onto one elbow.

Stallone moved between him and the family.

He did not hurry.

The smartphone remained near the island where Daniel had dropped it.

The emergency connection had not ended.

A distant dispatcher’s voice came through the speaker.

Outside, tires hissed against pavement.

Then red light crossed the window.

Blue followed.

The colors swept over the children’s drawings on the refrigerator, disappeared, then returned.

Daniel saw them too.

His face changed.

Not remorse.

Calculation.

Even now.

Emily recognized it because she had spent years watching him decide which version of himself other people were allowed to meet.

Stallone adjusted the cuff of his leather jacket.

Daniel looked up at him from the wreckage.

“Touch them again.”

Nothing in Stallone’s voice rose above conversational volume.

It did not need to.

Daniel stayed down.

Emily pressed her lips against Noah’s hair.

She had imagined rescue differently during the worst nights of her marriage.

In those private fantasies, rescue felt like relief.

This did not.

Her throat burned.

Her hip hurt.

Her son was trembling in her arms.

Half her kitchen lay broken across the floor.

Police lights painted the walls of the house where she had spent years telling herself things were manageable.

But Noah was breathing.

She could feel every breath against her chest.

Someone pounded on the back doorframe and called into the house.

Stallone remained between Daniel and them.

May you like

Emily looked at the glowing smartphone beneath the island.

For years Daniel had convinced her that one call would destroy everything.
