Chương 3
“They wanted custody.”
The room froze.
Daniel’s face changed instantly.
“Who would try to take my child?”
Maya’s eyes filled with tears.
“Someone who believed they had a right to him.”
Marcus stepped forward.
“Who?”
Maya looked at the papers.
“I don’t know if I should say the name.”
Daniel’s voice became firm.
“You need to.”
Maya took a long breath.
“The person who contacted me was Noah’s biological grandfather.”
Nobody moved.
The words stayed in the air.
Daniel stared at her.
“What?”
Maya looked down.
“He claimed he had proof that Noah belonged to his family.”
Daniel shook his head.
“But Noah is ours.”
Maya nodded.
“I know.”
“Then why are there papers saying otherwise?”
Maya could not answer immediately.
Because the truth was more complicated than anyone expected.
Eleanor stepped closer.
“Daniel, the documents do not say what you think they say.”
He looked at her.
“Then what do they say?”
“They say someone has been trying to control this situation from the beginning.”
Daniel looked confused.
“Who?”
Eleanor looked at Maya.
“Maya was not hiding a child from you.”
“She was hiding from someone else.”
The words changed the entire meaning of the secret.
Daniel looked at Maya.
“Why didn’t you tell me someone was threatening you?”
Maya’s voice cracked.
“Because I knew what you would do.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You think I would have ignored it?”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“I knew you would confront them.”
“And?”
“And I was afraid you would get hurt.”
Daniel looked away.
He remembered all the times Maya had told him she was tired.
All the times she canceled plans.
All the times she looked over her shoulder when they were outside.
He thought she was overwhelmed.
He never imagined she was afraid.
The newborn made a small sound.
Everyone turned toward the baby.
The moment reminded them that despite everything happening around them, there was still a child who needed them.
Daniel returned to the bedside.
He looked at Noah.
“I should have noticed.”
Maya shook her head.
“You couldn’t have known.”
“I should have.”
“You were building a future with me.”
Daniel looked at her.
“And you were protecting us alone.”
Maya wiped away her tears.
“I was trying.”
“I know.”
It was the first time Daniel had said those words without anger.
Eleanor watched them carefully.
She knew this was not the end of the problem.
The person who had sent the documents was still out there.
The threats had not disappeared.
But something important had changed.
Daniel finally knew the truth.
And now he had a choice.
He could walk away because he felt betrayed.
Or he could stay and fight for the family standing in front of him.
He picked up the papers again.
“This person who contacted you.”
Maya looked at him.
“Yes.”
“Where are they now?”
Maya hesitated.
“I don’t know.”
Daniel looked at Eleanor.
“But you know something.”
Eleanor remained silent.
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Mom.”
Eleanor sighed.
“There is one more document.”
The room went silent.
“What document?”
Eleanor slowly reached into her bag.
She pulled out a sealed envelope.
“I was hoping we would never need this.”
Daniel stared at the envelope.
“What is inside?”
Eleanor looked at Maya.
Then at Daniel.
“The information that explains why this family was targeted in the first place.”
Eleanor held the sealed envelope in her hands for several seconds before finally placing it on the small table beside the hospital bed.
Nobody moved.
The envelope seemed heavier than it looked.
Daniel stared at it, feeling the same fear he had felt when he first saw the documents.
He had spent the last hour discovering that every answer seemed to lead to another question.
“What is in there?” he asked.
Eleanor looked at him with sadness.
“Something I should have told you sooner.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
His voice was quiet, but the disappointment behind it was impossible to miss.
Maya looked down.
She understood his pain because she had lived with her own version of it for months.
Eleanor slowly opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph, several handwritten notes, and another set of official documents.
She placed the items on the table one by one.
Daniel picked up the photograph first.
His eyes widened.
The picture showed a younger Maya standing beside a man Daniel had never seen before.
The man was holding a baby.
Daniel looked at Maya.
“Who is he?”
Maya took a slow breath.
“That is Noah’s grandfather.”
Daniel looked back at the photograph.
“But why does he have a picture with you?”
Maya hesitated.
“Because before I met you, he was part of my life.”
Daniel felt a wave of confusion.
“You knew him?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Maya looked at the floor.
“Because he was connected to someone I loved.”
Daniel waited.
He could see she was fighting with herself.
“My first serious relationship was with his son.”
The words surprised everyone except Eleanor.
Daniel slowly lowered the photograph.
“You were with his son?”
“Yes.”
“And Noah?”
Maya’s eyes filled with tears.
“Noah’s father is his son.”
The room became completely silent.
Daniel looked toward the baby.
For a moment, he felt like the ground beneath him had shifted.
He had believed he understood his place in Noah’s life.
Now he realized there were pieces of the story he never knew existed.
“Then why did you let me believe everything was different?”
Maya looked at him.
“Because I never wanted to lie to you.”
“But you did.”
“I know.”
Her voice broke.
“I was afraid.”
Daniel looked away.
He wanted to be angry.
He had every reason to be angry.
But he could also see the fear that had controlled every decision she made.
Eleanor picked up one of the documents.
“There is more.”
Daniel looked at her.
“What else could there possibly be?”
Eleanor unfolded the paper.
“His father disappeared before Noah was born.”
Maya nodded slowly.
May you like
“He left when I was pregnant.”
Daniel looked at her.
