Chương 8

No signs.
No neighbors.
Just a large house surrounded by darkness.
Daniel looked at Victor.
“This is safe?”
Victor nodded.
“Amelia owned it.”
Daniel stopped.
“She never told me.”
“I know.”
They entered the house.
It was not what Daniel expected.
He expected luxury.
Something cold and empty.
Instead, it felt like someone had lived there.
Books on shelves.
Family photographs.
A small wooden table near the window.
A blanket folded neatly on a chair.
Lily walked inside slowly.
“She was here.”
Daniel looked at her.
“How do you know?”
She touched the wall.
“She liked this color.”
Daniel looked around.
He realized something.
This was not a hiding place.
It was a home.
A home Amelia had prepared.
For them.
A sound came from another room.
Victor immediately reacted.
His hand moved toward his weapon.
Daniel stepped in front of Lily.
But the person who appeared was not an attacker.
It was an elderly woman.
She froze when she saw Daniel.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then tears filled her eyes.
“Daniel?”
He stared.
“Who are you?”
The woman covered her mouth.
“You really don’t know.”
Victor looked uncomfortable.
Daniel turned toward him.
“You brought someone here without telling me?”
Victor shook his head.
“I didn’t know she was here.”
The woman slowly approached.
Her hands trembled.
“I’m Margaret.”
Daniel waited.
“I was Amelia’s closest friend.”
Daniel said nothing.
Margaret looked at Lily.
Then back at him.
“She finally found you.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
Margaret looked heartbroken.
“Because everyone knew Amelia never stopped looking for a way back to you.”
Daniel’s voice became quieter.
“Then why didn’t she come?”
Margaret looked down.
“Because she was sick.”
The room went silent.
Daniel felt like the floor disappeared.
“What?”
Margaret’s eyes filled with sadness.
“She found out she had a serious illness shortly after Lily was born.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
“She knew she didn’t have much time.”
Daniel stepped back.
“No.”
He did not want to hear it.
He was not ready.
Margaret continued gently.
“She spent her final months making sure Lily would survive without her.”
Daniel looked at Lily.
The child was watching him.
Confused.
Unaware of how much pain surrounded her.
“She could have told me.”
Margaret nodded.
“Yes.”
“She could have trusted me.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t she?”
Margaret’s voice broke.
“Because she was afraid.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Of me?”
“No.”
Margaret shook her head.
“Of losing you.”
The answer made no sense.
Until it did.
Daniel remembered Amelia.
The way she looked at him.
The way she always apologized before leaving.
The way she seemed afraid of promising a future.
“She thought if you knew about Lily, you would become a target.”
Margaret looked toward the window.
“She believed distance would keep you alive.”
Daniel laughed softly.
But there was no happiness in it.
“She was protecting me by breaking my heart.”
Margaret looked down.
“Yes.”
The truth hurt because it was exactly the kind of thing Amelia would do.
She would sacrifice herself.
She would carry the pain alone.
And she would believe that was love.
Lily walked toward Daniel.
She looked up.
“Daddy?”
Daniel immediately knelt.
“Yes?”
“Did Mommy love you?”
Daniel looked at the child he had only known for one night.
A child who had already changed everything.
“Yes.”
His voice shook.
“She did.”
Lily smiled.
“Then she was right.”
Daniel frowned.
“About what?”
The girl held up the pendant.
“She said you would protect me.”
Daniel looked at the pendant.
Then at Lily.
He understood something.
Amelia had not been trying to keep him away.
She had been trying to prepare him.
Because she knew one day he would have to choose.
Walk away.
Or become the father Lily needed.
Daniel pulled Lily into his arms.
“I’m here.”
The words were quiet.
But they were a promise.
Outside the house, hidden beyond the trees, a vehicle stopped.
A man stepped out and looked toward the lights inside.
He held a file containing Daniel’s photograph.
Lily’s photograph.
And Amelia’s final investigation.
He made a phone call.
“They are together.”
A pause followed.
Then he smiled.
“Good.”
“Now we can finish what Amelia started.”
“Now we can finish what Amelia started.”
The man ended the call and disappeared into the darkness.
Inside the house, Daniel had no idea how close danger was.
For the first time in years, he was not thinking about survival.
He was thinking about tomorrow.
Lily was asleep upstairs.
The small room Amelia had prepared for her was exactly what a child needed.
Soft blankets.
A shelf filled with books.
A small lamp beside the bed.
A wooden box containing drawings and little memories.
Daniel stood at the doorway watching her sleep.
He still could not believe she was real.
His daughter.
A person who had existed for years while he lived every day believing he had nobody.
Margaret stood behind him quietly.
“She has your eyes.”
Daniel smiled faintly.
“I never noticed that before.”
“She does.”
Margaret looked toward the room.
“Amelia used to say that was the first thing she noticed about you.”
Daniel looked down.
“She remembered that?”
“She remembered everything.”
The words hurt.
Because Daniel realized he had spent years thinking he was forgotten.
But Amelia had carried pieces of him everywhere.
A sound came from downstairs.
Victor immediately turned.
Everyone in the house became alert.
Daniel walked toward him.
“What is it?”
Victor looked through the window.
“Someone is outside.”
Margaret’s face changed.
“They found us?”
Victor nodded.
Daniel looked upstairs.
At Lily.
The fear he felt was different now.
Before, danger meant something happening to him.
Now, danger meant losing her.
“What do we do?”
Victor looked at him.
“Get Lily out through the back entrance.”
Daniel frowned.
“What about you?”
Victor’s expression hardened.
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
Victor looked surprised.
“You do not get to decide that alone.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“You spent years protecting Amelia.”
Victor said nothing.
May you like
“You spent years protecting Lily.”
Daniel continued.
