Chương 4

Because he had nothing left to lose except doing the right thing.

Victor finally looked away.

“Take us to St. Matthew’s.”

The men immediately followed the order.

During the drive, Daniel sat in the back seat holding Lily.

She slept against his chest.

Her breathing was shallow but steady.

For the first time that night, her body was beginning to relax.

Daniel looked out the window.

The city passed by in blurred lights.

He thought about the photograph.

The pendant.

The message.

Find Daniel Carter.

His entire life had been ordinary.

Difficult.

Lonely.

But ordinary.

He worked temporary jobs.

He moved between cheap apartments.

He avoided people because people usually left.

His parents had died years ago.

His sister was gone.

He had no family.

No connections.

No reason for someone like Amelia Hart to leave instructions about him.

Yet somehow, a dying woman had trusted him with her daughter.

Victor sat across from him in silence.

Finally, Daniel spoke.

“Tell me the truth.”

Victor looked up.

“About what?”

“Everything.”

Victor remained quiet for several seconds.

Then he answered.

“Five years ago, Amelia Hart saved my life.”

Daniel listened.

“She worked as a financial investigator.”

Victor’s voice became lower.

“She discovered that several companies connected to powerful families were moving money through illegal operations.”

Daniel glanced at him.

“And you were involved?”

Victor looked directly at him.

“No.”

The answer came instantly.

“I built an empire through violence and fear.”

Daniel noticed the honesty.

“But Amelia was the first person who showed me that fear was not the same as respect.”

Victor looked toward Lily.

“She believed people could change.”

Daniel looked at the sleeping child.

“And she believed you could?”

Victor swallowed.

“Yes.”

The answer sounded almost painful.

“What happened to her?”

Victor’s hands tightened.

“She disappeared.”

Daniel waited.

“Everyone thought she was dead.”

The car became quiet.

“But she wasn’t.”

Victor shook his head.

“No.”

“She was hiding.”

“From you?”

Victor looked at Lily.

“From everyone.”

Daniel looked confused.

“Why?”

Victor took a breath.

“Because Lily was born with information that could destroy people.”

Daniel frowned.

“A child?”

“Not the child herself.”

Victor looked at the pendant.

“What her mother left behind.”

Daniel looked at the small silver object.

“What is it?”

Victor hesitated.

“A record.”

“Of what?”

“The truth.”

The car slowed as they approached the hospital.

Daniel looked down at Lily again.

He wondered how many times she had been forced to hear words she was too young to understand.

Secrets.

Threats.

Danger.

All while she only needed someone to hold her hand.

When they arrived, doctors rushed outside.

Victor’s presence immediately changed the atmosphere.

Nurses moved quickly.

Security watched carefully.

But Daniel stayed beside Lily.

A doctor examined her while asking questions.

“How long was she exposed to the cold?”

Daniel looked at Victor.

Victor answered.

“Approximately twelve hours.”

The doctor’s expression turned serious.

“She’s lucky.”

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

Lucky.

The word felt wrong.

No child should need luck to survive.

The doctor looked at Daniel.

“Are you her father?”

The question caught him off guard.

“No.”

The doctor looked at Lily.

“She keeps holding onto you.”

Daniel looked down.

Her small hand was still wrapped around his finger.

“I found her.”

The doctor nodded.

“Whatever happened before tonight, she feels safe with you.”

Those words stayed with Daniel.

Safe.

It was something he had not felt himself in years.

After the examination, Lily was placed in a warm room.

The hospital lights replaced the darkness of the warehouse.

The blankets replaced the thin coat.

The silence replaced the sound of the wind.

But Daniel still felt like he was standing at the beginning of something much bigger.

Victor entered the room holding a folder.

Daniel noticed his expression immediately.

“What is that?”

Victor placed it on the table.

“Something Amelia wanted you to have.”

Daniel stared at the folder.

“You had this the whole time?”

Victor nodded.

“I was waiting until I knew you were the right person.”

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“You tested me?”

Victor did not deny it.

“I needed to know if you cared about Lily or if you wanted answers.”

Daniel looked at him.

“And?”

Victor looked toward the child sleeping peacefully.

“You chose her.”

Daniel opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

Letters.

The first page made his entire body go still.

It was a birth record.

A name appeared clearly.

Lily Hart Carter.

Daniel’s hands stopped moving.

He looked up slowly.

“No.”

Victor said nothing.

Daniel looked back at the paper.

His heart began pounding.

Because beneath Lily’s name was another name.

The father.

Daniel Carter.

The room seemed to disappear.

The sounds of the hospital faded away.

The only thing he could hear was his own breathing.

He looked at Lily sleeping peacefully.

The child he had found freezing in an abandoned warehouse.

The child who carried his name.

The child who had been searching for him before he even knew she existed.

And for the first time in years, Daniel Carter felt something he thought he had lost forever.

A family.

A family.

The words felt impossible.

Daniel had spent years believing that part of his life was already over.

He believed some doors never reopened.

Some people never returned.

Some losses were permanent.

But now, in a hospital room filled with quiet machines and soft lights, a little girl who had been freezing in an abandoned warehouse was suddenly connected to him in a way he never imagined.

His hands trembled as he held the document.

“No,” he whispered again.

Victor watched him carefully.

“You have questions.”

Daniel looked up.

His eyes were filled with confusion and anger.

“You knew?”

Victor did not answer immediately.

That silence was enough.

Daniel stood.

“You knew she was my daughter?”

“I knew there was a possibility.”

“A possibility?”

Daniel’s voice became louder.

“She was alone in that warehouse.”

Victor remained still.

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

May you like

Daniel pointed toward Lily.

“You don’t know what it felt like holding her when she could barely breathe.”
