Chương 9

Rachel handed him a napkin.

He ignored it.

Lily sat cross-legged on the rug instead of the sofa.

Daniel took a slice he did not want.

The front doorbell camera chimed on his phone.

He checked automatically.

Emily stood on the porch.

Claire’s sister.

Daniel looked toward the stairs.

Rachel saw the screen.

“You invited her?”

“No.”

The doorbell rang again.

Then Claire came downstairs.

She had changed shoes and put on a cardigan over her dress.

Her face looked washed.

Not tear-streaked.

Just drained.

She stopped when she saw the pizza.

“Noah, not on the rug.”

The room froze.

Noah’s hand stopped halfway to his mouth.

Daniel stood.

“He’s fine.”

Claire looked at him.

“Emily’s here.”

“I know.”

“You called her?”

“I did.”

“Why?”

“Because I need somewhere to go.”

Daniel stared at her.

The doorbell rang a third time.

Claire walked toward the front hall.

Daniel followed.

She opened the door before he could stop her.

Emily entered wearing jeans, sandals, and a pale blue shirt with the sleeves rolled to her elbows.

She took one look at Claire and reached for her.

Claire stepped into her arms.

Daniel watched his wife fold against her sister’s shoulder.

Emily’s hand moved over the back of Claire’s hair.

“What happened?”

Claire said, “He thinks I’m dangerous.”

Emily looked at Daniel.

Her expression changed.

“Daniel?”

He closed the front door.

“Ask her what happened.”

Claire pulled away.

“I told you what happened.”

“Not all of it.”

Emily glanced between them.

Rachel had appeared at the end of the hall.

Emily saw her and visibly stiffened.

“Oh, great.”

Rachel said, “Nice to see you too.”

“Can everybody stop?”

Claire’s voice rose.

Noah appeared behind Rachel.

Lily caught his shoulder and pulled him back.

Daniel saw the movement.

He lowered his voice immediately.

“Not here.”

Emily noticed the children then.

Her face softened.

“Hey, guys.”

Lily did not answer.

Noah hid behind Rachel.

Emily looked at Claire.

That small response seemed to unsettle her.

“What happened?”

Claire pressed both palms against her temples.

“I lost my temper.”

Emily waited.

Claire looked at Daniel.

“Go ahead.”

Daniel said nothing.

“You want everyone to know, so tell her.”

“I want you to tell her.”

Claire laughed bitterly.

“Of course you do.”

Emily’s eyes narrowed.

“Claire.”

Claire dropped her hands.

“I put the kids in the backyard shed.”

Emily stared at her.

“For what?”

“They were screaming.”

Rachel looked away.

Daniel kept still.

Emily asked, “You mean the little wooden thing?”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“Today?”

Emily’s face changed.

“What do you mean, today?”

Claire closed her eyes.

Daniel watched Emily understand before the words came.

“You’ve done it before?”

Claire whispered, “A few times.”

Rachel made a sharp sound through her nose.

Claire snapped toward her.

“Don’t.”

Rachel’s eyebrows lifted.

“I didn’t say anything.”

“Your face did.”

Emily looked at Daniel.

“Were they locked in?”

“Yes.”

Claire said, “Not always.”

Daniel turned toward her.

Emily held up a hand.

“Wait.”

Claire looked at her sister.

Emily’s voice became careful.

“How long were they locked in?”

Claire did not answer.

Daniel said, “Up to thirty-three minutes on the footage I checked.”

Emily’s mouth opened.

Claire stared at him.

“You went through the cameras.”

“Yes.”

“You had no right.”

Rachel actually laughed.

Every head turned toward her.

She raised one hand.

“Sorry.”

“No, you’re not,” Claire said.

“No.”

“Rachel.”

Daniel’s warning came quietly.

She stopped.

Emily looked at Claire again.

“Thirty-three minutes?”

“I didn’t know it was that long.”

“You left them?”

Claire’s face tightened.

“I went to the store at the corner.”

Emily stared.

“You left the property while they were locked in a shed?”

“It was six minutes.”

Daniel said, “You were gone longer than that.”

“I was not.”

“The camera has timestamps.”

Claire looked at him with something close to hatred.

Emily turned away and dragged a hand through her hair.

“Oh my God.”

Claire stiffened.

“Don’t.”

Emily faced her.

“Don’t what?”

“Look at me like that.”

“How am I supposed to look at you?”

“I called you because I needed you.”

“I’m here.”

“No, you’re already taking his side.”

“This is not a side.”

Claire’s face crumpled for the first time.

“You promised me.”

Emily went still.

Daniel looked between them.

“What did she promise?”

Claire shook her head.

“Nothing.”

Daniel looked at Emily.

Emily did not answer.

“Emily.”

She rubbed her lips with two fingers.

Claire said, “Don’t.”

Emily’s voice dropped.

“He needs to know.”

“No.”

“He already knows about the condo.”

Claire’s head snapped toward Daniel.

“You told her?”

Daniel stared at Emily.

“You knew about it.”

Emily looked miserable.

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“Since she rented it.”

Daniel gave a short nod.

“Of course.”

“That’s not fair.”

“You both keep using that word.”

Emily stepped closer.

“She called me because she was scared.”

“So you helped her secretly rent an apartment.”

“Condo.”

Daniel stared at her.

Emily winced.

“Sorry.”

Rachel looked toward the ceiling as if asking for patience from a god she did not particularly trust.

Daniel said, “Why did she need it?”

Emily looked at Claire.

Claire shook her head.

Emily ignored her.

“She said she was afraid she might leave.”

The room went very quiet.

Daniel looked at his wife.

“Leave what?”

Claire’s eyes filled.

Emily answered softly.

“The marriage.”

Daniel felt the sentence enter him without pain at first.

It was simply information.

Clean.

Cold.

Then everything around it changed.

The hidden money.

The condo.

The kitchen estimate.

Claire’s panic when he came home.

He looked at her.

“You were planning to leave me?”

“I didn’t know.”

“You rented somewhere to live.”

“To breathe.”

“Without telling me.”

“I couldn’t tell you.”

“Why?”

“Because you would have fixed it.”

Daniel stared at her.

Claire wiped at one eye.

“You would have made a plan.”

“That’s what people do when their marriage is failing.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“That’s what you do with everything.”

He said nothing.

Claire’s voice remained low.

May you like

“You make lists.”

“You schedule conversations.”
