Chương 11

“Where?”

“Your room.”

“Are you coming?”

“In a minute.”

She hesitated.

Daniel crossed to her.

He crouched.

“I am not leaving the house.”

“Promise?”

He remembered his earlier refusal.

This time he nodded.

“Yes.”

Lily searched his face.

Then she let Rachel lead them upstairs.

Noah looked back once.

Claire watched until they disappeared.

The second they were out of sight, Daniel turned.

“You packed before the shed.”

Claire rubbed her forehead.

“Yes.”

“So the shed wasn’t why you decided to leave.”

“No.”

“What was?”

Claire lowered her hand.

“I told you.”

“No, you told me you needed space.”

“That’s what I meant.”

“You packed the children’s medication.”

“Because I wasn’t leaving them here.”

“With me?”

“You weren’t here.”

“I was coming home today.”

Claire’s eyes flicked up.

Daniel saw another hesitation.

“You knew I was coming home today.”

“Tonight.”

“My flight changed.”

“I know that now.”

“No.”

He stepped closer.

“You expected me tonight.”

“Yes.”

“So you planned to be gone before I arrived.”

Claire’s lips pressed together.

Emily sat slowly on the edge of the entry bench.

Daniel continued.

“Were you going to leave a note?”

Claire whispered, “Yes.”

“Where is it?”

She looked toward the stairs.

“In the bedroom.”

Daniel’s chest tightened.

“What did it say?”

“I don’t remember exactly.”

“You wrote it today.”

“I was upset.”

“Did it say where you were taking the kids?”

“No.”

Emily looked at her sharply.

“Claire.”

“I was going to call him.”

“When?”

“I don’t know.”

Daniel laughed under his breath.

Claire glared.

“Stop doing that.”

“You keep planning enormous things and then pretending the missing parts don’t matter.”

“I was trying to survive the day.”

“By disappearing with our children.”

“I wasn’t disappearing.”

“You rented a secret condo.”

“That is not the same thing.”

“You hid the address.”

“I didn’t want you showing up.”

Daniel stared at her.

The sentence landed somewhere deeper than the others.

“You thought I would come after you.”

Claire’s expression changed.

“I thought you would try to make me come home.”

“Have I ever stopped you from leaving the house?”

“That’s not what I mean.”

“Have I ever threatened you?”

“No.”

“Have I controlled your keys?”

“No.”

“Your phone?”

“No.”

“Your money?”

Claire hesitated.

Daniel felt Emily watching.

“There,” Claire said.

“That.”

“What?”

“You control the money.”

“We share every account.”

“You monitor it.”

“I pay the bills.”

“You notice everything.”

Daniel stared.

“That is not the same as controlling you.”

“It feels like it.”

“Did you ever tell me that?”

“I tried.”

“When?”

“You’d say we needed a budget.”

“Because we did.”

Claire laughed bitterly.

“Exactly.”

Daniel looked away.

He could feel anger trying to reorganize the conversation into something simpler.

Victim.

Offender.

Right.

Wrong.

The cameras made one part simple.

The rest was not.

Emily spoke quietly.

“Claire, did you think Daniel would hurt you if you left?”

Claire looked at her.

“No.”

“Physically?”

“No.”

“Did you think he’d hurt the kids?”

“No.”

“Then what were you afraid of?”

Claire’s eyes filled again.

“That he would convince me I was making a mistake.”

Emily frowned.

Claire looked at Daniel.

“You’re good at that.”

“At what?”

“Making everything sound reasonable until I don’t trust myself anymore.”

Daniel felt the accusation hit.

“Give me an example.”

“This.”

“This is not an example.”

“You’re doing it now.”

“I’m asking what happened.”

“You’re collecting facts.”

“Yes.”

“Exactly.”

Daniel stared at her.

Emily said softly, “Claire, facts aren’t an attack.”

Claire turned.

“You don’t live with him.”

“No.”

“You don’t know.”

Emily stood.

“Then help me know.”

Claire’s face twisted.

“I can’t explain it.”

“Try.”

“I’m tired.”

Emily waited.

“I’m tired of asking permission.”

“For what?”

“Everything.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You don’t ask permission.”

“Yes, I do.”

“You booked a secret condo.”

Claire stared at him.

For a second, no one spoke.

Then Emily said, “Maybe both things can be true.”

Daniel looked at her.

She continued.

“Maybe Claire feels controlled.”

Claire exhaled shakily.

“And maybe what she did to the kids is still completely unacceptable.”

Claire’s face hardened.

“Thank you.”

“That wasn’t agreement.”

Emily stepped closer to her sister.

“I’m trying to understand you without pretending this is okay.”

Claire looked away.

Daniel’s phone vibrated.

He checked it.

A banking alert.

A transfer request had been initiated from their joint savings account.

Fifty thousand dollars.

Daniel stared at the screen.

The request timestamp was 1:42 p.m.

Hours before he came home.

He looked at Claire.

Her face changed immediately.

“What?”

He held up the phone.

“You initiated another transfer.”

Claire went pale.

Emily frowned.

“How much?”

Daniel kept his eyes on Claire.

“Fifty thousand.”

Emily said nothing.

Claire whispered, “It didn’t go through.”

“That’s not the point.”

“I canceled it.”

“Why?”

“Because the contractor wouldn’t take the check.”

Daniel felt something click into place.

“The kitchen contractor.”

Claire looked down.

“You were moving fifty thousand after already spending thirty.”

“I was replacing it.”

Daniel stared.

“What?”

Claire rubbed both palms against her face.

“I was trying to put the money back before you saw the balance.”

“With money from the same account?”

“No.”

“Then from where?”

Claire did not answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Claire.”

Emily whispered, “Tell him.”

Claire looked at her sister.

“You said you wouldn’t.”

Daniel turned to Emily.

Emily’s face drained.

“What wouldn’t she tell me?”

Claire’s voice shook.

“Don’t.”

Emily looked miserable.

Daniel’s heartbeat slowed.

“What did you do?”

Claire closed her eyes.

When she opened them, she looked directly at him.

“I borrowed against the house.”

Daniel stared at her.

The words were simple enough.

They still took several seconds to become real.

“You borrowed against the house.”

Claire nodded.

“How much?”

Her eyes dropped.

“Seventy-five.”

Emily closed her eyes.

Daniel’s voice stayed flat.

“Seventy-five thousand dollars.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Last month.”

“Without telling me.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Claire swallowed.

“The line of credit was already available.”

May you like

Daniel knew what she meant.

Years earlier, they had opened a home equity line during a renovation and never formally closed it after paying the balance.
