Chương 10

That mattered to Emma.

Love did not cancel danger.

Danger did not prove love had never existed.

Human beings were harder than the clean categories everyone wanted afterward.

The temporary restrictions remained.

Noah stayed with Alexander.

Victoria’s contact remained supervised while she continued treatment and further decisions were postponed.

No one won.

Outside, Caroline Hale was waiting.

Emma considered walking past.

Caroline stepped aside rather than blocking her.

“Ms. Reed.”

Emma stopped.

Caroline looked toward the courthouse doors.

“My granddaughter used to scream in grocery stores.”

Emma frowned.

“Your granddaughter?”

“My daughter’s girl. She’s fourteen now. Impossible child.”

Emma did not know what to say.

Caroline gave a tiny shrug.

“I used to think my daughter was too soft with her.”

Emma waited.

Caroline looked embarrassed.

“I’m trying to say that I had opinions about Victoria. Before Noah. I thought she was dramatic. Self-involved. I told Alexander not to indulge every complaint.”

Emma studied her.

“Why are you telling me?”

“Because I’ve spent two months blaming my son for not seeing something I also chose not to see.”

Emma looked away.

Cars moved through the intersection beyond the courthouse.

A man in a delivery uniform argued with a parking meter.

Caroline continued.

“That doesn’t make me responsible for what she did.”

“No.”

“But it makes me responsible for what I do with what I know now.”

Emma looked back at her.

Caroline’s eyes were wet.

She seemed annoyed by it.

Emma almost liked her for that.

“I’m glad Noah is safe,” Caroline said.

“So am I.”

Caroline nodded.

Then she walked away.

The criminal case did not disappear.

Nor did it turn into the public spectacle Caroline had feared.

There were lawyers, interviews, delays, and discussions Emma was not part of.

Victoria’s attorney eventually communicated that Victoria would not claim Emma fabricated the shove.

That decision changed everything.

Not because it ended consequences.

Because it removed the ugliest possible fight.

Victoria accepted responsibility for assaulting Emma and for placing Noah in danger. The legal outcome involved continued court supervision, treatment requirements, restrictions around Noah, and consequences Emma understood only partly because she chose not to follow every detail.

She had already given enough of her life to the foyer.

The agency offered Emma her position back with the Hale family.

She laughed when Susan told her.

“I’m serious,” Susan said.

“So am I.”

“Mr. Hale specifically asked.”

“No.”

“He said you could set conditions.”

“No.”

“A salary increase.”

“No.”

“Emma.”

“No.”

Susan sighed.

“I had to ask.”

“You did.”

“Are you staying with the Harrisons?”

“The oatmeal people?”

Susan paused.

“I’m sorry?”

“Yes.”

Emma smiled.

“They like me.”

Three days later, Alexander came to the Harrisons’ house.

He did not enter.

He texted from the sidewalk.

Emma looked through the window and saw him standing beside a black SUV holding Noah.

She went outside.

“What are you doing here?”

Alexander adjusted Noah against his chest.

“I was invited.”

“By who?”

The front door opened.

Mrs. Harrison shouted, “By me.”

Emma turned.

“You don’t know him.”

“He called.”

Emma stared at Alexander.

He looked almost guilty.

“She’s persuasive.”

Mrs. Harrison waved and shut the door.

Emma looked at Noah.

He had grown.

Of course he had.

For some reason she had expected him to remain exactly as he had been in the bassinet.

He stared at her solemnly.

“Hi,” Emma whispered.

Noah blinked.

Then smiled.

Emma’s throat closed.

Alexander looked away, giving her privacy she had not asked for but appreciated.

She reached out.

Noah leaned toward her immediately.

Emma took him.

He grabbed a handful of her hair.

“Ow.”

Alexander smiled.

“He does that.”

“You could have warned me.”

“I thought you knew his schedule.”

Emma stared at him.

He realized what he had said.

“Oh.”

Emma laughed.

After a moment, he did too.

Noah bounced between them as though the adults had finally become interesting.

They sat on the front steps.

The Harrisons’ spaniels watched through the window.

Alexander rubbed his hands together.

“I owe you money.”

“No.”

“I do.”

“You paid everything.”

“Not salary.”

Emma looked at him.

“I’m not coming back.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you here?”

Alexander looked toward Noah.

“Because I wanted to say thank you when it wasn’t part of an emergency.”

Emma waited.

He looked at her.

“You saved his life.”

Maybe.

She had thought about that sentence often.

Everyone used it.

Police.

Her father.

Caroline.

Even Victoria.

Emma no longer knew whether she liked it.

“I caught a bassinet.”

Alexander nodded.

“Yes.”

“That’s what happened.”

“Okay.”

“I don’t want the rest of my life to become that one thing.”

“I understand.”

“No, you don’t.”

He looked surprised.

Emma shifted Noah on her lap.

“You get to go back to being a CEO. A father. A terrible coffee drinker. People will know this happened to you, but it won’t be the only thing they know.”

Alexander listened.

“I don’t want to be the maid who saved the billionaire’s baby.”

His face tightened slightly.

She continued.

“I want to be Emma.”

He nodded.

“Okay.”

She looked at him.

“That’s it?”

“What do you want me to say?”

Emma almost smiled.

“I don’t know.”

“You told me not to turn it into something bigger.”

“I did.”

“So I’m trying to learn.”

That answer surprised her.

She looked down at Noah.

He was chewing the drawstring of her sweater.

“Don’t eat that.”

He ignored her.

Alexander said, “He doesn’t listen.”

“He’s ten months old.”

“I’ve been told that isn’t an excuse.”

Emma laughed.

They sat quietly for a while.

Eventually Alexander said, “Victoria asks about you sometimes.”

Emma did not look up.

“What does she ask?”

“Whether you’re okay.”

“And what do you say?”

“That I don’t know.”

Emma nodded.

“That’s accurate.”

“She also asks about Noah constantly.”

Emma looked at him.

“How is she?”

Alexander rubbed his jaw.

“Better.”

“That sounds careful.”

“It is.”

“Do you trust her?”

He took a long breath.

“No.”

The answer hurt him.

May you like

Emma could see it.

“But I don’t hate her.”
