Chương 6

“Yes.”

“Not trying to take evidence off the floor ten minutes ago?”

Daniel stopped.

Madison lifted the bracelet.

“Why did you reach for this?”

“I was shocked.”

“You went straight for it.”

“I saw my bracelet.”

“You saw evidence.”

“No.”

“You didn’t even look at me.”

“That’s not fair.”

“Fair?”

The word came out louder than she intended.

Everyone went still.

Madison pressed her lips together.

She was not going to scream.

She had grown up in a house where anger was measured by volume because Richard’s silence could be more punishing than other people’s shouting.

She refused to perform devastation for these three people.

“Tell me about the hotel sleeve,” she said.

Richard unfolded it on the coffee table.

The logo belonged to the Marlowe, a boutique hotel twelve blocks from the Halcyon Club.

Madison recognized it.

Elena had been staying there for two nights.

She and Richard had fought earlier in the week after Richard invited three business associates to the rehearsal dinner without asking anyone. Elena had moved to the Marlowe, telling Madison she wanted one peaceful night before the wedding.

Madison had thought it dramatic.

Now she wanted to go backward through every opinion she had formed in the last forty-eight hours and slap herself.

The sleeve had a room number written inside.

Not Elena’s.

614.

Madison looked at Daniel.

“What is this?”

He said nothing.

Elena answered.

“It fell out of his jacket.”

“In your room?”

“Yes.”

Madison looked at the number.

“What room were you in?”

“622.”

Daniel said, “This proves nothing.”

Richard almost smiled.

It was not a pleasant expression.

Madison looked at him.

“Why do you have it?”

“Elena gave it to me this morning.”

Madison turned back to Daniel.

“Were you staying at the Marlowe?”

“No.”

“Then why did you have a room key sleeve?”

“I met someone there.”

“Who?”

Daniel hesitated.

Richard said, “Careful.”

Madison snapped her head toward him.

“Stop helping.”

Richard looked offended.

“I’m not helping him.”

“You’re making him think before he lies.”

Richard leaned back.

Madison returned her attention to Daniel.

“Who did you meet?”

Daniel looked at Elena.

Then at Madison.

“A friend.”

“What friend?”

“Ben.”

Madison almost laughed.

Daniel’s best man.

The same Ben who had spent the previous evening at the rehearsal dinner telling inappropriate stories about college.

“Ben was with me until eleven.”

Daniel said nothing.

Madison’s phone vibrated somewhere beneath the layers of her gown.

Once.

Again.

Again.

She ignored it.

Then Claire opened the library door without knocking.

“Sorry.”

Madison looked at her.

Claire’s face was pale.

“What?”

“You need to see this.”

She held up her phone.

Madison did not take it.

“No.”

“Madison.”

“I don’t care what anyone is saying.”

“It isn’t about that.”

Claire looked at Richard.

“It’s the video.”

Richard stood.

Claire stepped backward.

“Not you.”

He stopped.

Madison took the phone.

A social media post filled the screen.

The clip was seventeen seconds long.

It began after Richard struck Daniel’s hand away.

In the video, Richard seized Elena’s dress and tore it.

Elena gasped.

Madison shouted, “What the hell did you do to her?”

The clip ended there.

No bracelet.

No accusation.

No Daniel reaching for the evidence.

No bruise visible from the angle.

The caption read: BILLIONAIRE DAD ATTACKS WIFE AT DAUGHTER’S WEDDING.

Madison watched it twice.

The view count increased between plays.

Richard said, “Who posted it?”

Claire shook her head.

“Somebody sent it to a wedding gossip account.”

Madison handed the phone back.

Elena looked at Richard.

He said nothing.

For once, there was nothing useful he could say.

“You need to put out a statement,” Daniel said.

Everybody looked at him.

He seemed to realize too late that he had returned to normal problem-solving mode.

Madison stared.

“A statement.”

“To protect your dad.”

Richard said, “I don’t need protecting.”

Daniel gave him a bitter look.

“Of course not.”

Madison’s phone vibrated again.

She pulled it from the hidden pocket in her gown.

Forty-three unread messages.

Nine missed calls.

Three from Daniel’s mother.

Two from an aunt she barely spoke to.

One from the wedding planner standing somewhere in the same building.

A text from her college friend Erica simply said:

Are you safe?

Madison stared at those three words.

Safe.

She did not know how to answer.

Claire touched her shoulder.

“Do you want me to take your phone?”

Madison handed it over.

“Yes.”

Claire tucked it into her own bag without comment.

Richard looked at Elena.

“I can correct the video.”

Elena’s expression hardened.

“With what?”

“The truth.”

“My truth?”

Richard stopped.

Elena crossed her arms.

The torn seam shifted.

“You exposed me once already today.”

“I’m not going to—”

“You were going to.”

Richard did not deny it.

Elena looked around the room.

“If anybody posts anything about why you did that, I will leave.”

Richard’s face went still.

“You already left.”

“I mean permanently.”

Madison looked between them.

Richard nodded once.

“All right.”

Elena seemed surprised.

Madison was too.

Richard sat down again.

The public could believe he had attacked his wife.

For a man whose entire adult life revolved around reputation, leverage, and controlling the version of events other people received, that was not a small concession.

Madison did not forgive him.

But she noticed.

Daniel noticed too.

He crossed his arms.

“This is absurd. Elena gets to decide what everyone knows while I get destroyed?”

Madison turned toward him.

“You are worried about being destroyed.”

“Wouldn’t you be?”

“I am.”

That silenced him.

Madison looked at Claire.

“Where are his parents?”

“Small dining room with some of the family.”

“Keep them there.”

Claire hesitated.

“His mother keeps asking for him.”

Daniel moved toward the door.

Madison said, “Go.”

He stopped.

The word surprised everyone.

Madison gestured toward the door.

“You want to go to your mother? Go.”

Daniel stared at her.

“But if you walk out before you finish answering me, there is no conversation after this. None.”

May you like

His hand dropped from the doorknob.

Richard looked away, but not before Madison saw the flicker of recognition in his face.
