Chương 10

He sat down hard in the chair beside the fireplace.

“Madison.”

“No.”

“Please.”

“No.”

“We can work through—”

“No.”

He pressed his fists against his eyes.

She waited.

Daniel dropped his hands.

“I love you.”

Madison felt the words hit the exact place they had always hit.

That was the cruelty of familiar language.

It did not stop working simply because the speaker had betrayed you.

“I believe you,” she said.

Daniel stared.

Richard looked at her.

Elena did too.

Madison continued.

“I think you love me.”

Daniel’s face crumpled.

“And I think you loved yourself more every time loving me cost you something.”

He lowered his head.

Madison looked away.

She had not planned the sentence.

It was not a perfect ending.

Nothing ended.

Outside the library, plates were being cleared from tables where dinner would not be served.

The florist would still want final payment.

The band would still bill them.

Guests would return to hotel rooms with garment bags and gossip.

Her wedding registry would remain online until somebody remembered to take it down.

Two hundred miniature bottles of champagne printed with MADISON + DANIEL would exist somewhere after tonight.

Real disasters came with inventory.

Claire touched her arm.

“What do you want to do?”

Madison looked at Elena.

“Do you want a doctor?”

Elena hesitated.

“Yes.”

Richard stood.

Elena raised a hand.

“I don’t want you to take me.”

He stopped.

Madison expected anger.

Instead he nodded.

“Okay.”

Elena looked at Madison.

“Would you?”

Madison stared at her.

The request hurt.

That was not a reason to refuse it.

“Yes.”

Daniel stood.

“Elena, you’re seriously going to turn this into a criminal thing?”

Richard crossed the room before Madison could react.

He stopped inches from Daniel.

He did not touch him.

His voice was almost conversational.

“You should leave now.”

Daniel looked at Madison.

She said, “Go with Ben.”

Ben blinked.

“Me?”

“Yes.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You’re sending me away with a babysitter?”

Madison looked at him.

“I’m trying to keep my father from hitting you.”

Richard said, “I’m doing very well.”

Nobody acknowledged that.

Ben stepped beside Daniel.

“Come on.”

Daniel did not move.

He looked at Madison for a long time.

“Can I call you tonight?”

“No.”

“Tomorrow?”

“No.”

“When?”

“I don’t know.”

He swallowed.

“Are you giving the ring back?”

Madison looked at her left hand.

The engagement ring was still there.

She had forgotten it.

A three-carat diamond Richard had publicly disliked because Daniel bought it without asking Madison what she wanted.

Madison had defended Daniel for months.

She slid it off.

Daniel watched.

Madison placed it in his palm.

His fingers closed automatically.

“No,” she said. “I’m not giving it back. I’m making you take it.”

Daniel stared at the ring.

Then he left.

Ben followed.

The door closed.

Richard sat down.

Elena looked toward the window.

Madison remained standing between them.

Nobody spoke for almost a minute.

Then Richard said, “I’m sorry.”

Madison looked at him.

He shook his head.

“Not to you. Not yet.”

He looked at Elena.

“I’m sorry.”

Elena’s mouth trembled.

“You scared me.”

Richard nodded.

“I know.”

She closed her eyes.

He caught himself.

“Sorry.”

A tiny, exhausted laugh escaped her.

Madison laughed too.

Neither of them wanted to.

Richard almost smiled.

The three of them stood in the wreckage of something that had existed long before that morning, and for several seconds the absurdity was enough to let them breathe.

Then Elena began crying.

Quietly.

Richard did not approach her.

Madison did.

She sat beside Elena.

For the first time in eight years, Elena rested her head against Madison’s shoulder.

Madison let her.

She did not forgive her.

She did not know if she ever would.

But forgiveness was not required to sit beside somebody while they shook.

At the hospital, Elena asked Madison not to come into the examination room.

Madison waited outside with Claire.

Richard sat twenty feet away because Elena had not asked him to leave entirely.

He had removed his bow tie.

Without it, he looked older.

Madison had never considered the possibility that her father might someday become old in a way money could not negotiate.

Claire bought three coffees from a machine.

Richard tasted his and made a face.

“This is terrible.”

Claire stared at him.

Richard looked at the cup.

“What?”

Madison started laughing.

She laughed until her ribs hurt.

Claire joined her.

Even Richard smiled eventually, confused and wounded and still holding the terrible coffee.

A nurse walking past gave them an annoyed look.

Madison covered her mouth.

The laughter became tears without warning.

Claire put an arm around her.

Richard started to stand.

Madison shook her head.

He sat again.

That mattered.

At 2:18 in the morning, Elena came out with paperwork folded in half.

She had allowed photographs of the bruising.

A nurse had documented the marks.

Nothing about the process made the truth simpler.

There was no machine in the hospital that could tell them where consent had ended, where fear had begun, or which parts of the previous six months belonged to love, selfishness, coercion, cowardice, or regret.

Elena looked tired enough to fall asleep standing.

Madison asked, “Do you want to report it?”

Richard looked at Elena.

Madison noticed him force himself not to speak.

Elena stared at the floor.

“I don’t know.”

“That’s okay.”

Richard shifted.

Still silent.

Elena looked at him.

“You can say something.”

Richard frowned.

“I’m trying not to.”

“I can tell.”

Madison almost smiled.

Elena sat beside him.

“I don’t want this public.”

“It won’t be.”

“You can’t promise that.”

Richard looked at her.

“No.”

The correction cost him.

Elena nodded.

“I want time.”

“You have it.”

Madison looked at her father.

That time he did not say he knew.

They went to the Marlowe at three in the morning.

Elena did not want to sleep in room 622 again.

A hotel manager met them in the lobby.

Richard started to introduce himself.

Elena touched his wrist.
